The Steam Deck has been a success since it launched. One of its main advantages is its lightweight operating system and the Proton DirectX translation layer, which lets users play Windows games on Linux. However, Playtron, a startup company, aims to take this further with its new gaming OS.

Playtron is a cross-vendor and cross-platform Linux-based OS that supports Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and other game libraries. The start-up has only 18 employees, but it has already developed an alpha program that The Verge has reviewed.

The Linux-based OS developed by Playtron is simple to use and doesn't include any unnecessary software, unlike Windows. Playtron's feature set may not be extremely advanced at present. However, it already supports games like Death Stranding, Dave the Diver, and Baltaro.

Playtron is seeking contracts with OEMs and mobile carriers who want to integrate PlaytronOS into portable devices. As per the company, Ayaneo seems to already be on board, as it plans to launch a native Playtron handheld in late 2024. Additionally, the start-up aims to go beyond handhelds and expand its adaptability to other devices (laptops, PCs, TVs, phones, cars, tablets, etc). The company's first public alpha is expected to be released within the next two months. This release will allow users to provide feedback, which could speed up the development of the new OS.

Microsoft is gearing up for the Graphics Developer Conference (GDC), where it plans to make some exciting announcements. One of the primary focuses of the conference will be DirectSR, a new super-resolution technology that Microsoft is reportedly unveiling.

DirectSR aims to establish a standardised solution for graphics cards operating at a software level and executed by GPU-accelerated cores. However, Microsoft has yet to confirm which GPU architectures it will support. Hopefully, these will be unveiled at the GDC session, scheduled for March 21st.

Considering the presentation will include AMD and Nvidia engineers, we expect that the new super-resolution technique from Microsoft will run with graphics cards from both vendors. As for Intel GPUs, there's no sign that these will be supported, but we do believe they'll also be compatible.

We're unsure if DirectSR uses the same technology as the “Auto SR” featured within the latest Windows Insider builds. Although it could be the same, there's a chance that it could also be similar to what AMD is doing with Radeon Super Resolution and FSR.

KitGuru says: By providing a solution supported by all modern GPU architectures, Microsoft could make it much easier for game developers to implement super-resolution technology.

The post KitGuru Games: The Console Wars are ending… and PC wins first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Since the launch of the Xbox One, there has been a grey cloud hanging over the Xbox brand. Console sales fell well behind PlayStation and while Microsoft has managed to win over some with Game Pass, console hardware sales are still far below what we would expect considering the amount of money Microsoft has spent acquiring studios and publishers since 2018. Due to this, it feels like we see doom and gloom rumours around Xbox every few months. Things came to a head over the weekend with the revelation that Xbox games may go fully multi-platform.

In recent weeks, there have been whispers about certain Xbox games releasing on other consoles, like the PS5 and Nintendo Switch. At first, it sounded like it would just be the likes of Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves, opening these games up to a wider player base. It was also claimed that Microsoft would address this strategy shift in the Spring as part of a new set of announcements.

Over the weekend, the scope of this strategy changed significantly. Now, it is being rumoured that even Xbox's biggest franchises will be going multi-platform, with games like Starfield and Indiana Jones to arrive on PS5. As we already know, the biggest Activision Blizzard titles will also remain multi-platform, something that Microsoft announced prior to acquiring the company in late 2023.

Xbox-focused podcaster, xCloudTimdog, who has relationships with a number of Xbox employees and executives, summarised a lot of this in a recent video, sharing that Xbox missed its hardware sales targets in late 2023, despite holiday season discounts. This in turn has led to the CFO wanting to switch strategies and bring more games to competing consoles. Exactly how this would help Xbox hardware sales is entirely unclear and for now, it sounds like Microsoft does indeed plan to continue selling consoles, even with major games potentially becoming available on other platforms.

Why would you buy an Xbox still if all of their games are available elsewhere? Well, odds are Sony isn't going to allow Game Pass on PlayStation, so that will be Microsoft's big draw. Buy the console with no exclusive games and use Game Pass to play the latest titles at a cheaper cost, versus buying them at £70 a pop on PS5. The other pillar here would be Play Anywhere, allowing games to be played across both Xbox and PC for those who like to switch between devices.

Many Xbox fans have already flooded forums and social media with complaints about this. A poll conducted by WindowsCentral's Jez Corden shows that the majority of fans are no longer confident investing in the Xbox ecosystem given the rumours swirling around over the weekend. The poll has almost 40,000 votes, which is a very significant sample size. The message seems clear, most of the ‘core' gamers would rather own a PS5 if they are going to get to play Xbox games there anyway. This way, you get the best of both worlds, with access to Xbox games, as well as the PlayStation exclusives that launch exclusively on the console. However, as I'll explain further down in this article, I don't think PlayStation consoles as we know them today are going to last forever either.

If Microsoft really is throwing in the towel on exclusives and going multiplatform, then Xbox hardware makes little sense unless it is licensed out. Like the Steam Machines of old, perhaps Microsoft will pursue a licensing model in which partners make their own Xbox systems at different performance/price levels and load it with an OS that boots into a gaming-focused UI that works well with a controller.

With all of these issues in mind, it would seem that Xbox may transform itself in a similar fashion to SEGA. Once upon a time, SEGA was one of the biggest games console makers, but with tough competition from PlayStation and Nintendo, the company decided to ditch hardware entirely, instead opting to focus all of its efforts on creating games for the most popular systems. Nowadays, SEGA is one of the biggest multi-platform publishers around.

Would this be the best move for Microsoft as a whole? Historically, Microsoft has always been a software-focused company and when Satya Nadella took over the company as CEO, he also directed a new focus on services too. This has led to things like Microsoft Azure and Office 365, which have been hugely successful for Microsoft. By dropping hardware from the equation and switching to multi-platform game development and publishing, Microsoft would stand to make a lot of money and would start to reap the rewards pretty swiftly. After all, there are a significant number of customers on PlayStation who have never owned an Xbox and may have never even played Halo or Gears of War.

Going by the PS4's install base, that's well over 100 million new customers to sell games to. Sony will get its platform cut, but Microsoft may be able to negotiate better terms to get it below 30%, as we know some publishers have managed to do exactly that, including Activision Blizzard.

Additionally, this change in strategy could also open the door for Microsoft to acquire more studios in the future without raising red flags at regulators. One of the key arguments used by the FTC against the Microsoft-Activision merger is that Microsoft could leverage IP like Call of Duty to run Sony out of business by making content exclusive. If there is no Xbox and there are no exclusives, then it may be able to get away with even more high-profile studio acquisitions.

However, losing one of the pillars of the console market could also have major downsides. Microsoft has managed to push Sony into offering a better subscription service, and was also instrumental in forcing Sony's hand in allowing features like cross-play and cross-save in games. Without a major third console in the market, Sony would have more market power than it already has. The company has never been shy about throwing its weight around, as we saw with the Sony-led shift towards £70 games on new-gen consoles. While some publishers held out for a while, eventually, everyone began charging Sony's new standard price for games and this has had an effect on PC game pricing too.

Sony could also backtrack on its multi-platform efforts and go back to releasing full exclusives, as there would no longer be a competing Xbox. I think this scenario is unlikely though, as many Xbox gamers may opt to go to PC instead, a sensible move due to concerns around game preservation and continued access to your library.

While the gut reaction to this news is to wonder why, especially given Microsoft's investment in studios over the past several years, I actually think this is a smart move. We are moving towards a future where locked-down console hardware that sells at a loss no longer makes sense.

Creating games is becoming increasingly expensive and when you add on overhead for covering hardware losses, having a PC-focused games market simply makes more sense. Let the likes of AMD, Intel and Nvidia worry about hardware instead and focus on shipping polished software that can be accessed locally on a PC, or on any device via the cloud.

I believe this is where the gaming market is heading. Sony has already realised it needs to get on board with multi-platform releases to reach a wider audience and has been investing in cloud for well over a decade. If Microsoft goes down this path and sees huge gains, Sony will likely follow. There is no reason a PC can't play Xbox or PlayStation games. There's no reason you can't license out that brand name to a company like Corsair and turn the Corsair One mini-PC into a ‘PlayStation' or an ‘Xbox', complete with a special full-screen UI designed for a TV and controller that displays your library and different stores/launchers.

I understand concerns around game optimisation here, as developers tend to squeeze as much performance as possible out of consoles. However, if there are no consoles and we're all gaming on PC, or a PC in the cloud, then developers will have to focus all efforts on optimisation and scalability to reach the broadest amount of players. To help avoid issues with players buying games they can't feasibly run on the hardware they have, a store page warning can be added to let a player know that their PC might not be able to run a game reliably, before pointing them to the hardware requirements section. Additionally, a cloud streaming option can be offered as part of a continued ‘PlayStation+' or ‘Xbox Game Pass Ultimate' subscription. This cloud streaming option could also pop up if a user runs out of local storage space, or it could be offered once a game starts installing, so you can jump in faster while the game installs locally.

In this scenario, we as consumers would be in greater control of our hardware, we would have greater access to games and the god-forsaken console war would finally come to an end. It would mark a generational shift in how the games market functions but I think it is the shift that makes the most sense.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people have been quick to balk at the idea of Xbox games going multi-platform, but the fact is, PlayStation gamers will buy them, as will Nintendo gamers, which would be a win for the Microsoft Gaming business. I doubt Sony wants to keep making locked-down, loss-leading consoles forever either. Let's just get this over with and go back to PC gaming.

Several months on from acquiring Activision Blizzard, Microsoft kicked off 2024 with the announcement that it would be laying off nearly 2000 employees. Unsurprisingly, this has been followed up by a glowing earnings report from Microsoft executives.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft's gaming business is now one of the biggest in the industry, solidifying its position in the market moving forward. The impact of Activision releases like Call of Duty can already be observed in Microsoft's earnings report, with Microsoft gaming revenue jumping up to over $7 billion for the previous quarter.

Importantly, if Microsoft's gaming division can keep this momentum going, then it may eclipse Windows earnings moving forward. For comparison, Windows earned $5.26 billion USD over the last quarter, although gaming still falls behind some of Microsoft's other major software areas, as Office and Cloud Services still brought in the most, generating just shy of $24 billion for the quarter.

Year on Year, Microsoft gaming grew by a massive 61 percent in revenue and Microsoft has seen a significant increase in active users for its gaming services too. Unfortunately, all of that success couldn't put a stop to the layoffs, which are now taking place across various Xbox studios, including teams at Activision Blizzard.

KitGuru Says: The Activision Blizzard acquisition is already paying off. In a few months time, we should also begin to see the impact Activision Blizzard titles can have on services like Game Pass, which has yet to receive support from Microsoft's newly owned studios. However, games like Call of Duty are expected to land on the service later this year.

CES is coming up and as expected, a slew of new laptops are due to be announced, with much of the marketing set to revolve around AI functionality. As part of this push, Microsoft is now working with OEMs to ensure that new Windows laptops ship with a new keyboard key to launch the Windows 11 Copilot feature.

Copilot has been available to Windows 11 users for a while now, acting as a new AI-based digital assistant for tasks, similar to ChatGPT but not quite as clever just yet. As more professionals and creators begin to leverage AI tools in their daily tasks, Microsoft is banking on the Copilot key being a useful feature for new laptop buyers.

Some of the newly announced Dell XPS laptops will feature the Copilot key on the keyboard and we can expect plenty of other OEMs to do the same thing. We'll see just how prevalent the Copilot key will be soon, as more laptops are announced and shown off at CES, which kicks off on the 8th of January.

AI will continue to be a key focus for Microsoft this year, particularly as the company works towards Windows 12, which will aim to “blur the lines” between local and cloud-assisted computing. Windows 12 is rumoured to be heading our way later this year. If true, we should have some solid details on the new OS before the summer.

KitGuru Says: Having a Copilot key doesn't necessarily need to be an issue, but if it is placed in a position where you may accidentally press it often, then it will be viewed as an annoyance and likely drive users away. Fortunately, there will likely be ways to disable it if needed.

Since 2016, Qualcomm has worked with Microsoft, supplying laptop processors capable of running Windows. Today at the Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon X Elite, a powerful new 12-core processor for PCs aiming to dethrone the competition.

The Snapdragon X Elite features a 4nm 12-core Qualcomm Oryon CPU, clocked at up to 3.8GHz with up to 4.3GHz dual-core boost speeds. It also features the new Qualcomm Adreno GPU, offering up to 4.6TFLOPS of graphics performance and support for 4K/120Hz displays, multiple 4K or 5K displays, HDR and upgradeable drivers.

Qualcomm is also working on its own Frame Motion Engine, enabling higher frame rates using AI to generate additional frames, similarly to DLSS 3 or FSR 3.

Another keen focus is the NPU, the Neural Processing Unit is designed to accelerate AI workloads, capable of running generative AI LLM models with over 13 billion parameters on-device. This will enable AI developers to work more efficiently, without needing to go through the cloud to access super computers.

Another impressive feat here is efficiency. In a pre-breifing, Qualcomm said that the Snapdragon X Elite can deliver twice as much performance as the closest competing laptop processor, while using up one third of the power. According to Qualcomm, a laptop with this processor should be capable of multi-day battery life on a single charge but that will obviously depend on hours of use and workload.

The first PCs powered by the Snapdragon X Elite are expected in mid-2024, so we will perhaps get a preview of some upcoming models at CES in January.

Apple began to change this with the launch of Apple Silicon, its own specialised processors for Macs using Arm technology. Now, it looks like Nvidia and AMD might be preparing Arm processors of their own for Windows PCs.

Nvidia has had a well-documented interest in Arm, especially in recent years. The chip maker had attempted to acquire Arm in recent years but the deal was squashed by regulators. Still, projects like the Nvidia Grace CPU still exist, as does Nvidia Tegra, another Arm processor aimed at the mobile market, powering older Android devices and more recently, the Nintendo Switch. According to Reuters, Nvidia has now begun designing Arm-based CPUs to power PCs, a project that might be running alongside Microsoft's Windows on Arm efforts.

The report also claims that both Nvidia and AMD could be ready with Arm-based PC processors by as early as 2025, indicating that AMD is getting involved in this as well.

Qualcomm will be making new announcements later today in a keynote, so expect some new chip news in a few hours time. Apparently, executives from Microsoft, Nvidia and AMD will be in attendance too.

Microsoft is working on adding the ability to remove backgrounds from images with a single click to its venerable Paint software. The latest Windows Insider builds already have the updated version of Paint, giving users a chance to try the feature before its official release.

The new “Remove Background” option is accessible on the left of the top ribbon, allowing you to remove the background of an image with a single click. You may also use the “Select” tool to delete just a section of the specified area's background.

It's fantastic to see Microsoft expanding Paint's capabilities. Although the new tools won't offer a full replacement for something like Photoshop, features like this may come in handy for the general user. MS Paint won't likely ever compete with Photoshop in terms of user base, but some basic added functionality is always good. Everyone has a camera and takes pictures, but most of us don't need or know how to work with Photoshop. However, backdrop removal is not always easy. Backgrounds with numerous colours, overlapping lines, and lighting can make the task considerably harder. If it were that simple, Microsoft would have added the feature years ago.

The updated version of Paint is now accessible in the Canary and Dev Channels (versions 11.2306.28.0 and above). However, the first Dev Channel build included a bug where a confidentiality banner was shown. The bug was fixed in a newer update (version 11.2306.30.0).

A couple of weeks ago, a Windows 11 update began causing issues for MSI motherboard users, resulting in a BSOD ‘unsupported processor' error. After some investigation, the root cause of the issue has been found and a new BIOS update should fix things right up.

MSI and Intel have been working together to find a solution to this issue on MSI's Intel 700 and 600 series motherboards. It would seem that the unsupported processor error was primarily caused by a firmware setting of the Intel Hybrid Architecture and it mainly affected 13th Gen Core i9 processors running a couple of specific Windows 11 builds and one version of Windows 10.

MSI has begun rolling out BIOS updates for its motherboards to address the problem. In the list below, you can find the list of boards with an available link to the updated BIOS:

It has been about a year and a half since the Steam Deck launched. The Linux-powered PC gaming handheld is consistently a top seller on Steam but until now, Windows and Mac remained as the two most-used operating systems amongst Steam gamers. Now, that has finally changed, with Linux overtaking Mac for the first time.

According to the July 2023 Steam Hardware & Software survey, Linux is now used by 1.96 percent of users on Steam, a 0.52% gain, putting it ahead of Mac, which currently sits at 1.84 percent. Windows of course still dominates, with different versions of the OS accounting for 96.21 percent of all users.

Of all the versions of Linux in use, Arch Linux 64-bit is the most used on Steam. This is the distro that SteamOS is based on, so a good chunk of this recent adoption can be tied directly to Steam Deck sales.

We're still a long way from Linux becoming a dominant platform, but if Valve continues to make the Steam Deck, including upgraded versions in the future, then we may see this momentum continue.

Meanwhile, the Steam Deck's Steam browser and general setup offers a better base level for users to jump in. For that reason, I expect the Steam Deck to continue to be the most popular of the handhelds.

There has been a huge rise in the popularity of handheld PC gaming systems over the last few years. We've seen more OEMs jump on this trend recently, with the likes of the ROG Ally. Lenovo might be the next big name in tech to launch a PC gaming handheld, currently known as the Legion Go.

According to Windows Central, Lenovo has been preparing its own handheld gaming system for a while now. Known as the Legio nGo, the device would spot an 8-inch display and would be powered by an AMD Phoenix APU. Like the Asus ROG Ally, Lenovo's handheld will also run Windows 11 to maximise compatibility with PC games. Other devices like the Steam Deck run on Linux instead, relying on Proton to act as a compatibility layer to get many PC games running, which means not all games are compatible, including some big names like Destiny 2.

It has been said that Microsoft may be working closer with OEMs creating devices like this to clean up the Windows experience on a handheld. Microsoft has previously expressed public interest in making Windows more user-friendly for handheld devices.

Exactly how this handheld will perform up against other Windows-based alternatives still remains to be seen and there is of course a question mark around pricing. We should hopefully get more details on that in the coming months.

Years ago when Microsoft began improving its PC gaming efforts, we saw the Play Anywhere initiative launched, with participating games in the Play Anywhere program allowing users to buy one copy of a game across both Xbox and PC. It has been a while since we've seen Play Anywhere in headlines, but it returns this week with news that Starfield will be a Play Anywhere title.

If you are a multi-system gamer with an Xbox and PC, you'll only have to buy one digital copy of Starfield and you'll unlock it on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, although the game will be limited to the Windows Store version – you can't claim a Steam copy of a game through Play Anywhere.

Of course, the game will also be a day-one addition to Game Pass and if you have a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, you'll also be able to access the game on Xbox and PC with any cross-platform functionality in place.

Starfield is officially due to release on the 6th of September, but those picking up the Deluxe Edition will get five days of early access beginning on September 1st. Bethesda recently shared a trio of new shorts, giving us insight into some of the key cities in the Starfield universe.

In recent years, Apple has been focusing more on gaming, particularly on the Mac platform. Its latest chips have powerful, efficient iGPUs, paving the way for games like Death Stranding and No Man's Sky on Mac. Now, Apple is testing new ways to make bringing games to Mac easier for developers.

Valve has championed Linux gaming for years and has made huge strides in this area recently, The latest versions of Proton allow for most Windows games to run on Linux systems, like the Steam Deck, without much issue. Now, as pointed out by The Verge, Apple is working on a Proton-like environment that can get DX12 Windows games running on Mac.

Some have already tested this tool. In one example, a Redditor got Cyberpunk 2077 running on an Apple M1 MacBook Pro. At 1440×900 resolution and ultra settings, the game didn't run particularly well, delivering sub-15FPS performance. However, more sensible graphics settings, like the low preset, could possibly get the game running at a playable frame rate.

This tool is part of Apple's new Game Porting Toolkit, providing an emulation environment for unmodified Windows games. This gives developers a chance to test the game and identify areas of focus before endeavouring on a true native port. For now, it isn't intended as a catch-all solution for gaming on Macs, like Proton is for the Steam Deck.

KitGuru Says: We're not quite at the point where we could start considering Macs as a capable alternative for gaming but if tools like this can increase developer support, then we might get to that point eventually.

While Microsoft was able to convince the UK's Competition & Markets Authority that its acquisition of Activision Blizzard would not harm the console gaming market, it would seem the CMA was not convinced that the deal wouldn't impede competition in the cloud gaming market.

According to the CMA, Microsoft accounts for as much as 70 percent of the global cloud gaming market and due to its other strengths in operating systems with Windows and cloud infrastructure with Azure, the CMA has concluded that Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard would provide a pathway to monopolising the market.

While Activision has publicly stated that it would not be pursuing certain deals, like putting Call of Duty on subscription services, without Microsoft's acquisition. However, the CMA says it has evidence that Activision would offer its games more broadly to cloud gaming providers in the near future independently of Microsoft.

The CMA says Microsoft's remedy proposal had “a number of significant shortcomings”, claiming it did “not sufficiently cover different cloud gaming service business models” and that it was “not sufficiently open to providers who might wish to offer versions of games on PC operating systems other than Windows”.

Microsoft's large presence in multiple parts of the tech sector seems to be the big hang-up here. While the CMA is opting to block the deal, Microsoft has said it will appeal the ruling. Microsoft is also going to court against the FTC in the US to try and push the merger through. Presumably, if the EU moves to block the deal, Microsoft would appeal there too.

KitGuru Says: It seemed like things were trending in the right direction for Microsoft, so this final decision does seem somewhat shocking. If Microsoft needs to embark on a number of appeals, then it will need to extend the deadline for the deal, which is currently set at mid-July.

There is no denying that the success of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck has helped to inspire other manufacturers to get in on the handheld market. One company which seems to be tinkering with the idea is Microsoft – with a new video showcasing a Windows 11 UI designed for handheld gaming.

As shared by Twitter user ‘WalkingCat’, part of Microsoft’s Hackathon event from last September saw one employee present the latest project from senior UX designer Dorothy Feng. This Windows Handheld Mode comes with a launcher which allows users to easily access games from across the many gaming storefronts that exist, including Steam; PC Game Pass; EA Play; The Epic Games Store and more.

In addition, this handheld mode comes with an optimised on-screen keyboard as well as a floating taskbar for added ease of use.

With it being part of a Hackathon project do not expect this feature to be released – at least not in its current form. It is clear that this launcher is early in development and comes from a small team of developers. That said, it is also clear that Microsoft employees themselves have a great deal of interest in bringing Windows to handhelds, and so hopefully this Hackathon project ends up becoming a reality.

Those wanting to play games via Steam however will soon need to upgrade as come the end of the year support for older versions of Windows is officially ceasing.

Making the announcement via their Steam Support page, Valve announced that “As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.”

Explaining the reasons behind this decision, Valve continued, “The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.”

While Windows 10 saw a great deal of adoption, millions of PCs still run much older versions of the software. Fortunately, many of those are unlikely to be gaming PCs and so hopefully this upcoming end of support affects as few people as possible. Still, for Steam users running Windows 7/8 your PC’s days are unfortunately numbered.

Since the release of Hearthstone, online card games have become increasingly popular. Other traditional TCGs like Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic The Gathering have made the transition to digital offerings and soon, the Pokemon card game will be doing the same thing. Pokemon TCG Live just entered open beta on PC and mobile, offering a new way to quickly pick up and play the game.

There has been a digital version of the Pokemon TCG since 2010, but Pokemon TCG Live will replace it, while offering better features and visuals. As expected, you'll be able to transfer your cards from the old app to the new one, but users have already reported a few bugs with the beta importer tool.

There are multiple ways to get cards, but none include microtransactions. To earn cards, you can buy a physical pack for £3.99 that has a code that lets you redeem up to 400 cards. Alternatively, you can also complete in-app quests, log in daily, and win in-game tournaments to earn different currencies to buy booster packs. These currencies also let you purchase player items, deck sleeves and cosmetic items.

Currently, the app includes cards from the Pokémon TCG Black and White generation, up to the latest expansion, the Silver Tempest. However, you can only play with cards that belong to the latter, at least for now. The Pokémon TCG Live app is available for Android, iOS, PC and MAC.

Currently, the only storage requirement to install Windows 11 is 64GB of free space. There's no mention regarding the type of storage device, allowing users to install on an HDD or an SSD. However, according to a new report, Microsoft may soon limit Windows 11 installations to SSDs.

According to a report from Trendfocus (via Tom's Hardware), Microsoft is asking OEMs to stop using HDDs as boot drives in favour of SSDs for pre-built systems. The report also adds that the manufacturers have a deadline to do it by 2023, but discussions to push it back to 2024 are still underway.

Although SSD prices have dropped since they've become widely available for consumers, they're still more expensive than HDDs. Today you can get a 1TB HDD for £35, but if you wanted an SSD for that same price, you would get one with 500GB of storage. With SSDs still being more expensive per GB, OEMs are a bit resistant to this change.

Despite Microsoft's demands, the company hasn't altered the Windows 11 system requirements yet, as it still lists a “64 GB or larger storage device” to install the OS. However, assuming the deadline for OEMs to use SSDs as boot drives is accurate, we might only see the storage requirements change by then.

While DirectStorage technology has been available on Xbox Series X/S since launch, it is only just coming to PC for the first time this year. Microsoft announced plans to roll out DirectStorage support for Windows last week, and now the first supported game has been announced – Forspoken.

While Forspoken isn't coming to Xbox at launch (it is a PS5 console exclusive), the PC version will still implement Microsoft's new technology. Luminous Productions technical director, Teppei Ono, also showcased Forspoken's improved loading times using DirectStorage during a GDC 2022 presentation.

Forspoken loads in 24.6 seconds on a traditional HDD, but using an M.2 SSD and DirectStorage, that number can be reduced all the way down to 2.2 seconds. If you have a fast enough PCIe 4.0 SSD, then some parts of the game will load instantly, taking just one second to load up. Forspoken will also be supporting AMD's FSR 2.0 technology at launch, so Luminous Productions is looking to stay at the cutting edge of PC features.

Microsoft has not yet announced other PC games supporting DirectStorage, but we would anticipate some first-party titles will be updated with the feature, like Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, as well as new releases in the second half of 2022.

Back in January, Google announced its own plans to bring Android apps to Windows, using a new Google Play app for PCs. The app will pave the way for supported Android games to run on PCs natively, without the need for an emulator like Bluestacks. Now, Google Play Games for PC is entering beta.

As reported by Android Bytes host, Mishaal Rahman, the beta for Google Play Games is now live in three markets – Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. Of course, you can download the app already and get it running, but you'll need a Google account from one of the three supported markets for the time being.

The beta will expand to additional markets over time and for now, the beta is invite only, so even if you go through the effort of making a new account, you will need to sign up and wait for an invite. The app will continue rolling out in different regions throughout 2022.

Some of the games that are already supported by the app include Asphalt 9: Legends, Magic Rush: Heroes, Summoners War, War Planet Online and a number of titles that are only available in Asia. Google Play Games for PC will support full mouse and keyboard controls and ‘optimised graphics' for larger displays. All games will also support cross-save with smartphones, so you can switch between an Android phone and PC without losing any progress.

The Steam Deck launched to a mixture of emotions, with those who managed to get the system at launch both applauding the console and its ambitions, but also acknowledging its current software-led issues. One of the biggest issues – the lack of Windows drivers – has now been partially resolved.

Making the announcement on their blog, Valve revealed that Windows drivers are now available for the Linux-based device, saying:

“Hello! Have we mentioned Steam Deck is a PC? Like any other PC, you can install other applications and OSes if you'd like. For those interested in installing Windows, you'll need a few additional drivers to have the best experience. Links to these, along with notes for installing Windows on Steam Deck can be found here.”

While this is undoubtedly exciting for owners of the Steam Deck, there currently exists some important caveats. Firstly, users can’t yet dual-boot the Steam Deck, meaning that they would have to commit to Windows. As mentioned by Valve, the Steam Deck is fully capable of dual booting, the software just isn’t ready yet.

Another limitation is the fact that Windows 11 is not installable, with only Windows 10 being available. While this may not be an issue for some, it is certainly worth noting – that being said, Windows 11 support will come eventually.

The final stipulation with this announcement is the fact that while Windows drivers are now available for GPU, WIFI and Bluetooth, audio drivers are said to be still in the works. Despite the many limitations currently, offering Windows drivers for the Steam Deck allows for early tinkering with the system, letting developers (or curious fans) try out Windows on the Deck in a more seamless capacity. Hopefully its limitations are removed fully sooner rather than later.

In late 2021, Microsoft announced some major improvements coming to the Xbox Game Pass app on PC. The update will finally give users more control over their game installs and files, as well as increased mod support. Now after months of testing, this update is finally ready to roll out.

Today, alongside new Xbox Game Pass game announcements, Microsoft also revealed that the Game Pass app on PC will be getting its highly anticipated update today. Now, users of the app can expect more flexibility and control over their games and files, bringing it more in line with something like Steam, and continuing to do away with the awful UWP system that debuted on Windows 10.

With this update, PC gamers can install Game Pass titles to any folder on their PC, and you'll also be able to dig through the game files without being blocked off, opening the door for more modding opportunities for titles on Xbox Game Pass. This will even make it easier to use basic tools, like reshade, in addition to opening the door for more expansive mods for titles like Skyrim, Fallout and other supported games.

Additionally, if you need to move some games around to free up space on an SSD or HDD, you will also now have an easier time moving games between folders and drives. You should now be able to move entire installs without needing to redownload anything.

The Xbox Game Pass PC update is rolling out for Windows 10 and Windows 11 today.

Microsoft hasn't yet announced a successor to the Surface Laptop 4, but as usual in the tech industry, leaks can give us an early glimpse at what we can expect. Like the predecessor, the Surface Laptop 5 will be available as a 13.5-inch model or a 15-inch, each packing a selection of Intel and AMD processors.

As you may have expected from the Intel processors available for the Surface Laptop, the spec sheet leaked by Windows Prime (via My Laptop Guide) shows the new Microsoft laptops will come with a 12C/16T Core i5-1240P (13.5-inch model) or a 14C/20T i7-1280P (both models). As for the AMD chips, the Surface Laptop 5 13.5 can pack a 6C/12T Ryzen 5 6680U and the 15-inch laptop an 8C/16T Ryzen 7 6980U.

The leaked spec sheet also details the display, which will feature the same 3:2 aspect ratio as other Surface Laptops, a 1500:1 contrast ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. In addition, the 13.5-inch display has 2256×1504 resolution, while the 15-inch one has 2496×1664 resolution. Both displays support Dolby Vision and have touch capabilities.

Depending on the configuration, the Surface Laptop 5 can pack up to 32GB of LPDDR4x memory, which is unexpected. When AMD announced the Ryzen 6000 series, it had only listed them as supporting DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory. This leaves us with two options: the chips are refreshed Ryzen 5000 series chips, like the Ryzen 7 5825U and the Ryzen 5 5625U, or AMD has built custom Rembrandt-based APUs with support for LPDDR4 memory.

In the spec sheet, Microsoft lists the AMD-based laptops as having up to 21 hours of battery life and up to 19 hours for the Intel versions. Moreover, the laptops will have up to 1TB of SSD storage, depending on the model. Lastly, they will support Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4.0 through the 2x USB-C ports.

KitGuru says: Would you prefer if Microsoft used refreshed AMD chips instead of the new Rembrandt-based ones?

Unlike consoles, PCs come in all shapes and sizes, meaning that some PC players are limited in the number and type of games that they can download and play. Microsoft is now making it easier to identify your PC’s capabilities before dedicating both time and SSD space on an unplayable game.

As reported by The Verge, the latest update to the Xbox app for Windows insiders comes with a brand new feature allowing you to figure out prior to downloading a title whether it would run well on your machine.

While this sort of test is nothing new and could always be checked on third-party websites, it seems as though Microsoft may be doing much more than simply scanning the hardware and comparing it to each game’s recommended specs – but instead are manually checking games and their performance.

Full details on how this is measured is not yet known, however as it is currently only part of the insider app, Microsoft is likely still tweaking the testing methodology.

One of the biggest barriers to entry with PC gaming is making sure you have a powerful enough PC, while also knowing the system’s limitations. Microsoft taking the manual work away from users lines up with the console manufacturers recent push into the PC market – as well as their goal of maximising the user experience. It will be interesting to see how this evolves over time, and whether the technology is accurate.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this feature? Would you like to see such a thing added to Steam? Do you ever worry about game performance on your PC? Let us know down below.

We've seen multiple laptops and 2-in-1 PCs with ARM-based processors running Windows, but they've all had one thing in common – Qualcomm processors. This week, we finally found out why this has been the case. As it turns out, Microsoft and Qualcomm hashed out an exclusivity deal for Windows on Arm.

Although this deal was supposedly signed a long time ago, we've only learned about it recently, thanks to XDA. Apparently, the deal is expiring soon, meaning we should see other ARM chip manufacturers jumping in, including MediaTek, which is already reportedly working on a chip for that purpose.

Besides MediaTek, there's also a chance that we will see Samsung trying to snatch a piece of the market share, as well as Apple. The exclusivity deal may have gotten in the way of offering Windows support on M1-based Macs.

As this deal is coming to an end, the much-talked Windows transition to ARM might speed up considerably. It's still not clear exactly when the deal will expire, but it would seem that more ARM chip makers will have a chance to offer support for Windows in the near future.

KitGuru says: It is odd that a deal like this is only just becoming public knowledge now, but either way, once the deal expires, we should see a big influx in Arm-based systems running Windows.

While Xbox Game Pass offers an incredible value for money across both PC and consoles, the PC version of the service falls behind due to its lack of features when compared to the likes of Steam. Finally, the Xbox app on Windows will soon offer mod support, allowing for much greater flexibility – and making Game Pass even better.

As reported by the Verge, an upcoming update to the Microsoft Xbox app on PC will “allow Windows users to install PC games from the Microsoft Store or Xbox Game Pass for PC to any folder of their choice with unrestricted access.”

What this means is that users will have much greater freedom when it comes to installing games, as well as opening the floodgates to much easier mod support. You will also be able to “browse to where files are installed, change the drive where games are installed, and pick custom folders for installs.”

The update is now available to Xbox Insiders, allowing those who enjoy living on the edge to experience these improvements right now.

Xbox Game Pass is an amazing service, however it has been limited somewhat by its lack of PC-focused features. This has meant that Steam continued to be the best way to play games, even if its value prospect was much less enticing. With this latest update however, the Xbox app is closing the gap, making Game Pass even better, and reaffirming that Microsoft is focused on PC just as much as it is on console.

The Microsoft Surface Pro devices have historically offered a balance of portability and performance, with the devices becoming popular in the school and education space. For the past few iterations, the Surface Pro devices have been lacking in innovations – though this is finally changing.

Ahead of the Microsoft Surface event which is set to take place tomorrow on the 22nd of September, Twitter user ‘Shadow_Leaker’ showed off a screenshot of a retail advert for the alleged Surface Pro 8.

Alongside this image, which showed off a much more modern looking device – with drastically thinner bezels bringing the screen to 13 inches – the Surface Pro 8 will allegedly also feature a 120hz screen for smooth scrolling, faster screen responses and more.

Furthermore, the device will use Intel’s latest 11th generation processor, offer dual thunderbolt interfaces and surprisingly will come with a replaceable SSD slot. What isn’t surprising however is the fact that the device will launch with Windows 11.

While all of this should be taken with a pinch of salt currently, we will find out in 24 hours whether this leak proves to be true. If it is indeed the Surface Pro 8, then this new device looks to be an attractive prospect indeed. The original Surface Pro was impressive at the time, but over the years Microsoft has iterated less and less, with the most recent release looking comparatively antiquated. It is therefore exciting to see Microsoft once again pushing what can be done with a portable Windows device.

While Apple’s iPhone works seamlessly with many of the manufacturer's other devices, it is much more of a locked down system when paired with non-Apple devices. Such is the case with the company’s password manager which has historically been severely gimped on Windows machines. Finally however, Windows users will be able to fully utilise iCloud passwords on their PCs.

As part of its latest update, the iCloud app on the Windows Store allows those with an iCloud account to “View and manage your saved passwords on your Windows PC with the new iCloud Passwords app,” and “Sync your passwords across devices and PC in Edge using the iCloud Passwords Extension.”

Previously, those who rely on Apple’s own password manager would be able to sign in to apps and websites on Windows using the saved passwords, however they could do little else. Now, those who rely on iCloud passwords can not only copy and paste passwords, but according to 9to5mac “can add, edit, copy and paste, delete, or look up any usernames or passwords saved to their iCloud Keychain.”

The Apple ecosystem is a well known and controversial one, with many users needing to be all-in in order to benefit from their machines. This latest update to the app has loosened the rungs somewhat, letting Windows users with iPhones operate their password management in a much easier way.

Microsoft recently showed off Windows 11 – a revamp which comes with a plethora of changes – both visually and quality-of-life wise. While the full release is not expected to launch until much later this year, Microsoft did promise early access to those who are part of its Windows insider program. For those brave few, Windows 11 is now available.

Making the announcement, Microsoft said “Hello Windows Insiders, we are excited to release the first Windows 11 Insider Preview build to the Dev Channel, Build 22000.51! As we finalize the product over the coming months, we will work with you to validate the experience. You will get to try many, but not all, of the new features we showed last week in this early preview.”

Some of the features which are missing from this preview build include Chat with Microsoft Teams and Android apps in the Microsoft Store – though these have been promised to be arriving “over the coming months as they are ready for you.”

If you wish to partake in the Windows 11 Insider Preview, you can do so through being a part of the Windows Insider Program – though currently this Windows 11 build is only available through the Dev Channel, and not the recommended Beta Channel.

Due to this, those who install the update can expect a number of bugs and other issues – the full list of which can be found HERE. For those daring few however, Windows 11 brings with it many changes, including a visual overhaul, widgets, improved multitasking and more.
