In recent weeks, Insomniac Games was hacked, with a ransomware group stealing over 1TB of data. This week, much of that data has leaked onto the World Wide Web, spanning sensitive business documents, and even a playable alpha build of Marvel's Wolverine. Now, Insomniac has officially responded with a public statement.

Over on the company's Twitter account, Insomniac thanked fans for the “outpouring of compassion” that followed the massive data leak. The studio went on to say: “We're both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it's taken on our dev team. We have focused inwardly for the last several days to support each other”.

Insomniac is also aware that the leak included personal information of current and former employees, as well as contractors, alongside early development details on Marvel's Wolverine. They are still working to “determine what data was impacted”, adding that this experience has been “extremely distressing”.

Due to the seriousness of this leak, there was some concern that Marvel's Wolverine might be cancelled. However, Insomniac says “like Logan, Insomniac is resilient” and work on the game will continue. However, as much of the current state of the game is now public knowledge, the studio also adds that “the game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development”, as is the case with most games.

Insomniac will share more information on Wolverine “when the time is right”. The game should release by 2026, so there is still plenty of dev time left and any of the footage currently circulating won't be representative of the final product.

If you come across the leak, I would advise against downloading any of it. Those who have downloaded the stolen Wolverine alpha have already begun getting C&D letters from their ISPs. Beyond that, hackers could have buried anything in the files, so running it is far from advisable from a personal security standpoint. After all, this leak did come from a ransomware group.

KitGuru Says: The personal data leaks should be priority one here. With that said, I would like to mention that anyone pre-judging Wolverine based on current footage circulating should be patient and re-evaluate the game at a later date when it is ready. A prototype alpha is far from a finished game in the AAA landscape and Insomniac was likely not planning to show anything until sometime in 2025. By that time, the game will be vastly different.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Insomniac had been hit by a Ransomware attack, resulting in the theft of lots of data, including details about upcoming games and the personal information of employees. Now, those behind the attack have leaked 1.7TB of the company's internal data.

We won't be sharing the leaks directly here but it is a pretty major one. Amongst the documents are roadmaps for the next 10 years, details on Insomniac's licensing deal with Marvel, full plot details for Wolverine and even a playable alpha build. Unfortunately, the personal data side is just as devastating, with employee HR documents, passport details, internal company emails, tax information and termination forms all appearing.

Many of you will remember that CD Projekt Red also suffered a significant cyberattack and major leak after the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which slowed down progress on the game's much-needed fixes in 2021. With Insomniac keeping such a tight schedule for upcoming releases, there could be some impact there too.

Neither Sony or Insomniac have publicly commented on the leak as of yet. Given that Disney is partially wrapped up in this, they may want to talk this over with them too.

KitGuru Says: This is a massive leak and while the game side of it is major, the worst thing here is that employees will be impacted and may have to take steps to safeguard themselves.

Sony recently suffered a Ransomware attack but it looks like hackers have been targeting smaller companies under its umbrella as well. This week, it has been reported that Insomniac Games were hit by Ransomware this year, leading to the theft of information, including personal employee information, as well as details on the studio's upcoming games, like Marvel's Wolverine.

We won't be sharing the specific Wolverine leaks here but a couple of screenshots from the game were included in a collage of images meant to serve as proof that the attackers hacked Insomniac's systems in order to get them to pay the ransom.

Insomniac Games has not yet commented on the cyber attack or the leak, but the ransomware group, Rhysida, claims to have all the files and is threatening to leak them if a ransom is not paid by next week.

If the ransom isn't paid, the leaked documents will be put up for auction. As reported by Cyber Daily, the auction will start at 50 Bitcoins, which is worth just over $2 million USD.

Insomniac Games have been on a roll, with the PlayStation studio releasing 4 titles for the PS5 generation so far. Despite Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 only having launched last month, it seems as though the studio’s next game – Marvel’s Wolverine – is planned to release in 2024; at least according to one concept artist.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘Red Kong XIX’ concept artist Hung Nguy took to their Artstation account to publish a bunch of their current productions. Interestingly, Nguy appears to be working on a number of PlayStation Studios titles.

According to the artist, Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release some time in 2024, with Days Gone developer ‘Bend Studio’ said to be readying their next game for release in 2025.

Of course, even if these dates are indeed true, the release years would only represent the current internal development schedule – meaning things could change between now and then.

That said, known industry insider Jeff Grubb has previously claimed that Wolverine at the very least is seemingly planned to release in 2024, lending credence to this latest report,

If Marvel’s Wolverine does indeed end up releasing in 2024 then it would be hard to argue that Insomniac Games haven’t been the MVP of the PS5 generation so far.

Insomniac's Spider-Man games contain plenty of easter eggs for the wider Marvel universe. Soon, Insomniac will expand its Marvel repertoire with a standalone game based on Wolverine. In a recent interview, Insomniac confirmed that while Wolverine doesn't get a nod in Spider-Man 2, Insomniac's version of the character will be based in the same universe.

Spider-Man 2 does contain nods to plenty of Marvel characters, including the next set of villains on the way in future games, to nods to Avengers like Daredevil and Doctor Strange. While Insomniac's Wolverine game was announced at the same time as Spider-Man 2, the character was not teased at all in Insomniac's latest game.

However, in an interview on Kinda Funny Games covering spoilers for the game, Spider-Man 2 Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, confirmed that both Wolverine and Spider-Man take place in the same universe. It would seem that Insomniac didn't want to put too much pressure on the Wolverine team with hints or easter eggs in Spider-Man 2, instead opting to “let that team cook” and “do their own thing”.

Wolverine and Spider-Man are very different characters and will have very different gameplay. While a more ambitious cross-over could arrive eventually, I think Insomniac will look to keep Wolverine separate as it tests the waters with the first game.

KitGuru Says: Personally, I do want Wolverine to be about Wolverine, with little to do with Insomniac's Spider-Man games. The two could crossover eventually but at first, Insomniac needs to establish a strong version of the character that stands on its own.

Insomniac Games has quickly become one of PlayStation’s golden geese, with the studio using its bespoke engine and technologies to create highly impressive and performant games no matter the console. Ahead of the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (which will likely launch in September), the team is claiming to be using some new “very cool” dialogue technology.

As reported by TwistedVoxel, one of Insomniac Games’ recent Twitch livestreams (focused on careers and programming), saw the studio’s lead engine programmer Elan Ruskin tease some of the tech set to show up in future titles, claiming that “there is some very cool dialogue technology coming out in the next game.”

This is all we have to go on so far, however whatever the tech may be, it is safe to say that it will likely be rather impressive. We have seen Insomniac Games manage to create huge open world PS5 titles which not only run at a silky smooth 60fps but also include ray-traced reflections and even fancy muscle deformation tech.

2018’s Spider-Man saw Peter Parker actor Yuri Lowenthal record all his lines twice based on whether players are actively swinging around the city and fighting crime (using a more strained tone) or whether players are just chilling around New York City (featuring a neutral voice). It is entirely possible that the technology in question expands upon such techniques from the first game – or they could be using AI to write the script like Ubisoft is now doing. Hopefully it isn’t the latter.

While fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games, some have been looking further forward into the future, in particular at the studio’s previously announced Wolverine game. Though details are incredibly light at the moment, a new post by long-time Wolverine voice actor Steve Blum seems to hint at his involvement in the upcoming game.

As reported by TheGameSpoof, fans have started to speculate that Insomniac Games’ Wolverine will be played by Steve Blum – known best for having voiced Logan in multiple Marvel productions in the past.

This comes in the wake of a post by Blum on Instagram which shows the actor geared up in a motion and facial capture suit, explaining how he is involved in a video game – though he did not say which due to non-disclosure agreements.

With how closely associated Blum has been to the X-Men and Wolverine in particular, it would not be surprising to see Insomniac Games bring the actor into the fold. All that said, it will probably be a while before we get any official confirmation, especially as Insomniac Games is currently hard at work on Spider-Man 2, which is set to come out later this year.

For Insomniac’s Spider-Man, the team opted to hire Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker – a newcomer to the iconic role. It will be interesting to see what the mentality behind bringing back Blum is – assuming of course that he is indeed returning as Wolverine. We will have to wait and see.

Insomniac has been very busy since joining Sony officially a few years ago. So far, the company has delivered an expansion to 2018's Spider-Man, a new Rachet & Clank game and is on track to release Spider-Man 2 later this year. As it turns out, Insomniac's other Marvel project, Wolverine, might not be too far behind.

Insomniac has revealed very little about its plans for Wolverine. However, according to insider Jeff Grubb, the studio is targeting a 2024 release, and a few other details about the game have also been shared.

Insomniac's Wolverine will be set prior to the character joining the X-Men. It is also claimed that the game will feature open areas of the map, but not a fully explorable open world as we saw in the Spider-Man games.

It is also suggested that Insomniac might be building up its own little shared universe, although we don't expect to see Spider-Man and Wolverine crossing paths directly, there may be nods towards both heroes in their respective games. It is worth noting that while this could be true, Insomniac has previously stated that it won't be trying to mimick the MCU.

Microsoft and Sony have been locked in a back and forth regarding the Xbox manufacturer’s intentions to acquire publisher Activision Blizzard for almost $70 Billion. A secondary effect of this engagement is the fact that many ‘inside baseball’ details are being revealed. One new interesting tidbit claims that Insomniac Games’ Wolverine will be released in 2023.

As part of the ongoing Activision Blizzard acquisition situation, Microsoft submitted a document to the CMA in which (as discovered by tech4gamers) the console manufacturer made some bold statements regarding competitor Sony’s upcoming output in order to defend the acquisition, saying:

“PlayStation also has a spate of first- and third-party exclusive titles lined up for launch in 2023, including Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, Horizon, Final Fantasy XVI and Forspoken.”

Spider-Man 2, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Final Fantasy XVI and Forspoken have all been confirmed to be releasing some time in 2023. That being said, Insomniac’s Wolverine has had no such treatment, with many fans expecting it to come out much later.

Insomniac Games is of course currently working on Spider-Man 2, which as mentioned by Microsoft is planned for release in 2023. Them also then releasing Wolverine in 2023 not only seems to make little sense but is deemed infeasible by most.

That being said, Insomniac Games is known for being a highly efficient studio, with them being known for releasing multiple games in a 12-month period (such as with Spider-Man Remastered, Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart) – and so we will simply have to wait and see.

Ever since the surprise reveal of Insomniac Games’ Wolverine at the recent PlayStation showcase, many fans have been left wondering what the game will be like. With little more than a teaser trailer, there has not been much to go off of. Insomniac has now clarified that the game will offer a “mature tone.”

Following the reveal of Insomniac’s Wolverine, one fan took to Twitter to ask “Is [Wolverine] a big or a ‘miles morales’ size game?” following it up with “I NEED ANSWERS”. The game’s Creative Director, Brian Horton, responded, saying simply “Full size, mature tone.”

2018’s Spider-Man took roughly 17 hours to finish (according to howlongtobeat.com), not including the game’s three DLC packs. Miles Morales on the other hand takes just 7.5 hours: less than half the time. The question of how long a full game should be however is difficult to pin down.

Spider-Man is an open world game, and such titles will often be longer in length due to travel times and side-quests. Linear stories on the other hand are more likely to be shorter experiences. The recent Resident Evil Nemesis can be beaten in just 6 hours on average, and yet it was regarded as a full-sized game. Still, it is good to see that Wolverine should offer plenty of time in the shoes of Logan.

With Insomniac Games working on more child-friendly titles such as Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank, there was a concern by some that the game might be too lighthearted in tone for a character such as Logan. Fortunately, it seems this will not be the case. The only question now is whether the game will be rated 18 or 16 – as this can have major implications on the design of the game. We recently discussed our thoughts on the reveal trailer and what we wanted to see from Wolverine – the column of which can be found HERE.

The post KitGuru Games: Things I DO and DON’T want to see from Insomniac’s Wolverine first appeared on KitGuru.]]>

When Insomniac Games’ logo popped up during the PlayStation Showcase, no one expected it to be followed by the announcement of a Wolverine game, except that is exactly what happened. The trailer gave us very little to go off, however minds have been immediately running rampant – including mine. I have the utmost faith that Insomniac Games will create an excellent Wolverine game, as they have consistently done with the Spider-Man titles, however, there are certain things I do and do not want to see from a Wolverine title. So without further ado, here are 5 things I do and do not want to see from Insomniac Games’ Wolverine.

Things I Don’t Want To See

Directed by James Mangold, 2017’s Logan served as a defining film for the Wolverine character. Offering a brutal, heart breaking and emotional story, the film was unanimously praised, and finally gave Hugh Jackman a film worthy of his Wolverine portrayal.

With all that said, I do not want Insomniac’s Wolverine to be a retelling of Logan. Of course, the studio would never drag and drop the story from one medium to another, however I do not want to see the critical and commercial success of Logan influence the team at Insomniac Games. We have already seen a near-perfect telling of the old man Logan story, and even if Insomniac didn’t adapt that specific story, I don't want to see them evoking similar beats and moments from the film.

With Spider-Man, Insomniac Games managed to create a Peter Parker that could stand alongside the likes of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in personality, looks and overall Spider-Man…..ness. While Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine is iconic, Insomniac’s version needs to be different enough so as to not evoke too many comparisons. There is one way they can circumvent this – though you will have to wait until later to find out.

Spider-Man is known for his web swinging and so it only made sense that the games would be set in an open world New York City. Wolverine meanwhile would simply not work in an open world. While Spider-Man has its emotional moments, Logan's entire character is steeped in tragedy, pain and tension. These elements would only be diluted if Logan were to explore an open world, engaging in side quests and not worrying about those who are looking for him.

Wolverine is a man always on the run, and an open world would drastically reduce this feeling. A linear story would fit the game best, and while recent Insomniac Games titles have leaned more into open areas and worlds, the studio has worked on many linear games in the past, and so it wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory for the team.

Things I Do Want To See

While it may seem hypocritical for me to say I do not want a story like Logan partially due to the fact that I don't want comparisons to be made between the game and movies – only to later request that Hugh Jackman play the part – the actor so perfectly embodies the character of Wolverine that I couldn’t imagine seeing or hearing anyone else be him.

With a character like Spider-Man, the movies have had 3 different actors play the role and so creating an original Peter Parker for the game was not jarring. Looking at Square Enix’s Avengers however, the team were adapting characters which were only ever represented by one actor (aside from The Hulk). Having not-Robert Downey Jr and not-Chris Hemsworth was more distracting than if they used the actors’ likenesses. For that reason, I want to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine. It doesn’t need to be the same character, (the game adaptation doesn't need to share any canon with the film), just the same face and voice.

I know you may be thinking “but Hugh Jackman officially retired as Wolverine after 2017’s Logan,” and while that may be true, one of the primary reasons for his retirement was due to the fact that he was getting older, and the routine required to maintain a body such as Wolverine’s was simply getting too much. Lending his likeness and voice to the character however would take comparatively little effort – plus Hugh Jackman isn’t a stranger to the world of video games (look up 2004’s Van Helsing).

Spider-Man is a relatively lighthearted character, making jokes and beating up bad guys. What you won’t see in the games, however, is any blood – nothing aside from a few scratches anyway. This is partly due to the fact that Spider-Man doesn’t kill unless absolutely necessary, but also due to the game’s age rating.

Being rated a 16, Spider-Man and Miles Morales were made available to a much wider audience than an 18 rated game would be. Furthermore, parents of younger children are more likely to buy their child a 16 rated game than an 18 one. These factors are part of what helped 2018’s Spider-Man ultimately sell over 20 million copies.

While Insomniac Games is known nowadays for being rather child friendly, the studio isn’t afraid to make an adult game, with the Resistance franchise seeing enemies explode into bloody giblets after coming face to face with your character’s shotgun. While Wolverine is much more than just gratuitous violence, the violence is in service of the character and his story, and so for Insomniac Games to truly capture the essence of Logan, the game needs to be rated 18.

Things I Am Unsure About

Immediately upon seeing the trailer reveal that Insomniac Games is working on a Wolverine Game, one of the first thoughts that came into my mind was “will Wolverine crossover with Spider-Man eventually?” This thought makes a lot of sense; crossover events are more popular than ever, Spider-Man and Wolverine have interacted many times in the comics, and it would make A LOT of money. Nothing would be cooler than to see these two iconic characters interact with one another, and Insomniac Games does have the talent to pull it off – however I am concerned that it may take away from both Spider-Man and Wolverine’s worlds.

Once you start to introduce multiple characters, their presence or lack thereof begins to be brought into question all the time. This can be seen with the Marvel films, where any solo film is met with the question “where are the Avengers?” Similarly, we have already seen Peter Parker flown off to another country in order to make Miles Morales' game work as a solo affair. This decision by Parker seemed out of character, and introducing more characters would only complicate this further.

Additionally, Insomniac Games have created a fleshed out and specific world with the Spider-Man games, and are likely to do the same for Wolverine. These characters deserve their own worlds and their own places to shine – and seeing Wolverine in Spider-Man or vice-versa could be a bit too much of a tonal whiplash. Then again, it would also be incredibly cool.

Insomniac Games pushed superhero video games to new heights with 2018’s Spider-Man. They quickly followed it up in 2020 with Spider-Man Miles Morales. In a surprise announcement during the PlayStation showcase, it was officially announced that the team would be developing a Wolverine game.

While Insomniac Games are working hard on Spider-Man 2, the team has also been tasked with one of the other most popular Marvel characters -specifically Wolverine. Though the reveal trailer offered little more than a short teaser, the PlayStation Blog features more information.

According to the Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games “Back when we were working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, there would be times where all of us—Insomniac, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and Marvel—would brainstorm together about the future beyond the web-slinger. And even in those early discussions, Wolverine continually came up as the character we’d be really stoked to work on together. Fast-forward a couple years and we’re suddenly standing in front of Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel formally pitching a PlayStation 5 game starring the adamantium-clawed Mutant!”

Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone game where “our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special.”

While a Spider-Man 2 was inevitable, to see Insomniac Games being given the rights to another one of Marvel’s biggest properties is testament to the quality of the studio’s work on Spider-Man. It will be interesting to see how the game differs from Spider-Man – and who is playing the iconic character.
