Steam Workshop has been around for years now and many of us just assumed that the idea came about due to Valve's history with the modding community. As it turns out though, part of the reason Workshop came into existence is thanks to World of Warcraft, as Gabe Newell got the idea while gold farming.

In an interview with Gabe Newell in the latest issue of Edge Magazine, Valve's CEO said that he was exploring ways to turn games into “productivity platforms” and began gold farming in WoW as a proof-of-concept. Soon enough, Gabe was “making $20 an hour farming gold”, which would be “a spectacular wage for most people in most parts of the world”.

After this, Valve created Steam Workshop, giving people an opportunity to make some money through in-game skins, starting off with hats in Team Fortress 2. Of course, Steam Workshop ended up netting some creators a lot more than $20 an hour, as Valve quickly learned. Here is one of the quotes via PCGamesN:

“There's this story of the parents that called us up because they thought we were selling their kid drugs. What happened was PayPal pinged the parents and said, ‘Your kid is exceeding our limits of how much money they can put into PayPal per month. They're probably selling stolen goods or drugs, because there’s no other explanation.' So the parents called us up and I said: ‘He makes items on the Team Fortress Workshop. He’s making $500,000 a year.' That to us was an indication that this was a helpful way of thinking of games—as platforms—and it's informed all of our decisions about multiplayer games subsequently.”

KitGuru Says: As interesting as Gabe's WoW habits are, the fact that someone so young was able to leverage Steam Workshop to make so much money is my biggest takeaway here. Have any of you ever managed to make money through Steam Workshop submissions?

Over the years, Valve has opened up the Steam platform a ton, adding lots of features and making it easy participate in the Steam community via the Workshop, Marketplace, Reviews and groups. Unfortunately, this also opens up the door for scammers attempting to take advantage, with CS:GO skin scammers making a return.

Just a few weeks ago, Valve attempted to tackle this very same issue by placing limitations and an approval system on the Steam Workshop for CS:GO, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2. The idea was to stop the number of Workshop listings falsely promising free skins. Some of those people have since moved on to abusing Steam's reviews function to advertise.

As pointed out on Reddit this week, CS:GO skin scammers are now promising ‘free skins' for the game in the reviews section for games on Steam and then using a series of bots to add ‘helpful' ratings to the review to boost the number of people it will be seen by.

Some of those reviews have already been removed by Valve but an official response has not been made just yet. We will likely hear something soon though, as the Steam team will be looking to crack down on this practise too.

KitGuru Says: The Steam Reviews function is incredibly useful when shopping around for new games but it has also been abused plenty of times too. Valve has managed to somewhat curb ‘review bombing' but now it will need to find a way to keep reviews open while also cracking down on skin advertising.

Last week, we learned that Valve was making changes to Steam in an effort to crack down on developers abusing the store’s ‘upcoming releases’ list. Now this week, the Steam team’s attention is turning towards the community workshop, where CS:GO, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 items will now need to go through an approval process.

Valve will now require workshop creators to have their workshop items approved before they can be downloaded. Initially, it was believed that this change would affect all games on Steam but it turns out that Valve is only targeting its own first-party games, in an effort to reduce the number of creators claiming to offer free skins for workshop subscriptions.

Currently, Valve is aiming for a turnaround time of ‘less than a day’ when it comes to item approvals, although if you have ever dealt with Steam Support, then you’ll know that the timetable can slip.

Updates to workshop listed items will also need approval from Valve, although the older listing will still be available in the meantime.

KitGuru Says: It will never cease to amaze me how massive the in-game skins business has become over the last five years. Now that Valve is requiring approvals for workshop content, it will be interesting to see if there are other areas of Steam where Valve takes back control.

While Overwatch undoubtedly has a beautiful style and an emphasis on skill-based combat, fans of the shooter have noticeably been yearning for more. It seems as though Blizzard has been listening, with its brand new Workshop feature allowing player-created content through “a simplified scripting system.”

Currently only available on PC’s Public Test Realm server, the Workshop allows players to take pre-existing game modes and heroes to build on top of them, creating new rules, win conditions and a whole range of quirky new obstacles. It does have its limitations, as players will not be able to import art or change up level design, but it does open up a whole new world for fans to explore unofficial lore, create new powers for a hero and test balancing suggestions to pass onto Blizzard.

Unsurprisingly, fans have already made good use of the new tool crafting new things to do. There’s already Hamster Ball Racing where players are tasked with rolling into checkpoints as quickly as possible, a Custom Hero Creator which resembles Dota 2’s Ability Draft mode by combining attacks from multiple heroes and someone who claims to have fixed tea bagging by instantly killing those that take part in the debatably toxic behaviour.

Director Jeff Kaplan is keeping his ear to the ground for the best of the best, suggesting that some might make their way to the live build of the game. In his developer diary, he specifically highlighted Molten Floor, a version of the ever-nostalgic ‘floor is lava’ where the floor is actually lava, and Mirror Deathmatch, where players face off as the same character for one minute before cycling to another hero.

The Workshop tool isn’t for beginners as Kaplan states that it “is more of a power-user feature,” but it does offer unexplored areas that will refresh the game in untold ways. It will eventually make its way to PS4 and Xbox One in the future, once Blizzard has fully tested it alongside the PC community.

KitGuru Says: Personally, if I played Overwatch, I’d create a mode like Call of Duty’s Gun Game, where players have to cycle through a pre-set selection of heroes by killing the enemy in a free-for-all. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is already a thing given the amount of imagination already pumped into the Subreddit.

One of the keystones of Rocket League's popularity, has been the developer's willingness to not settle with a single effective game mode, but continued releasing new ones that shake the experience up for all involved. Starting in December users will be able to help with that too, with the introduction of Steam Workshop support.

Rocket League is a game about launching balls around a giant pitch with rocket powered cars, but it also features an ice hockey mode, a basketball inspired hoop game, various strange maps and settings and of course the mutator mode which shakes things up even more. Workshop support could take it to new heights of crazy though, as the community gets in on modding the game.

Of course this isn't the first time mods have been applied to the game, but Steam Workshop support does make it a lot easier for people to apply them. Rocket League developer, Psyonix, pointed out (via VG247) two of its favourites in this announcement, highlighting how players unaware of Rocket League modding will no doubt enjoy playing the new obstacle course and dribbling mods that have been available for some time.

When it does go live in December, Workshop Support will let gamers add or subtract these mods and gameplay options from their install at the click of a button. Accessing them in-game is as easy as heading into the Extras menu and then navigating through the Workshop menu.

Valve and Bethesda have reversed their decision to sell a select number of mods through the Steam Workshop, amid a violent backlash from gamers that saw thousands around the world up in arms over what many perceived was an assault on the community driven mod scene. While initially talked about with much enthusiasm, the entire paid modifications feature is now being reconsidered, with staff saying they will chew over fan feedback to see how best to potentially implement it again at some point in the future.

“After discussion with Valve, and listening to our community, paid mods are being removed from Steam Workshop. Even though we had the best intentions, the feedback has been clear – this is not a feature you want. Your support means everything to us, and we hear you”, reads the Bethesda blog entry discussing the paid mods system.

sorry2
Sorry…

This was backed up later by a blog entry from Valve on the Steam Workshop, which echoed Bethesda's points. On top of assuring everyone that anyone who spent money on a mod in the past couple of days would receive a full refund, it attempted to explain what it had been trying to do.

“Our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities,” it said. Valve went on to say that it hoped the paid mods system would allow for the creation of more industry changing games like DotA, Counter-Strike and Killing Floor.

“We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating,” it said.

It did however say that it thought there was a “useful feature,” somewhere in there, so don't rule out paid mods never making a comeback in some other guise.

For the community's part, the general consensus in response to this news is that if Valve wants to allow paid mods, it needs to do two things: 1: make it a voluntary donation system, so mods can be ‘purchased' for whatever amount people are willing to pay and on top of that, incorporate other modding communities like the Nexus, otherwise a paid system on just Steam had the potential to fragment communities and lead to mod stealing.

Valve opened up a can of worms last night when it announced that it would be allowing developers to sell their mods on the Steam Workshop, with no quality control, curation process, or guarantee of future support or compatibility. The main issue people seem to be having though, is just how large Valve's cut of the revenue is.

When a mod is sold on Steam, the creator only gets a 25 per cent cut of the sales, while Valve takes home 75 per cent to split between itself and presumably Bethesda. If a mod fails to make more than $100, then the creator doesn't get paid at all.

Skyrim-e1429819031969

As you would imagine, the internet exploded with rage and less than 24 hours later, a Change.org petition has been born, with close to 40,000 signatures on record already. Unfortunately, the petition is aiming to remove paid mods entirely, rather than call for Valve to improve the program.

Modders work hard on some of their creations and honestly, with money brought in to the equation it is more likely that we will see talented developers strive to make big projects. Unfortunately, right now the selection of paid for mods on the Workshop are all pretty poor. We've already seen people try to pass off other people's work as their own and the revenue cut for creators is woefully small.

While this petition will get Valve's attention, it needs to change its message a bit. Anyone who works hard at something deserves to be compensated for their time and effort but there should absolutely be a standard in place. Nobody wants to buy weapon or armor skins for a single player game.

The simplest solution here would be to add a donation option to all mods on the Workshop. Then, select mods, such as those that add new characters, quest lines or gameplay overhauls, should be considered for the premium mod section. This way, Valve can ensure that paid for mods will be worth the money. Seriously, selling weapons and armor for a single player game is not going to cut it. A 25% cut for mod creators is not going to cut it and the poor refund policy currently in place is not going to cut it.

You can see the petition for yourself, HERE.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Valve trying to monetize mods is certainly a ballsy move. However, the company seems to have completely missed the mark. People clearly don't want to pay for mods but an encouraged donation would go a long way. Ensuring that all mods selected for the premium mod section were of a high enough standard would also do a lot to help the current situation.

Update: Killing Floor 2 is now available on Steam Early Access. Right now, the game includes three levels; Burning Paris, Outpost and a re-worked version of the Biotics Lab from the original Killing Floor game. There are four perks, 27 weapons, 11 Zeds and seven playable characters as well.

The game will be launching with an SDK for modders right off the bat, so expect the Steam Workshop to start getting content pretty soon. The final release date for the game is not yet known but it is expected to come out of Early Access sometime this year.

Original Story 07/04/15:

You might remember the game ‘Killing Floor', it was a Left 4 Dead style co-op zombie shooter that started out as a mod for Unreal Tournament and later became a standalone title in 2009. Now, there is a sequel coming out although it isn't quite finished yet.

Killing Floor 2 is set to launch on the 21st of April on Steam Early Access, developer Tripwire Interactive has announced. The game will feature four separate classes, three maps and 11 enemies in total, costing $30 in the US and £20 here in the UK.

Killing Floor 2 has been in the making for quite a while and has even been announced for the PlayStation 4 in addition to the PC platform. It is not yet known if the game will be launching in an alpha or beta state on Early Access or how long it will remain on Early Access for.

Killing Floor 2 is set directly after the events of the first game, in which Europe has been engulfed by a swiftly spreading virus that turns humans in to mutants. You can see the Steam Store listing, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Work on Killing Floor 2 started some time in 2011, following the release of Red Orchestra 2. Since the game has been in the works for so long, it really does make me wonder why it is launching in Steam Early Access. It will be interesting to see what state the game is in when it launches in a couple of weeks. Are any of you guys looking forward to Killing Floor 2? What do you think of it launching on Early Access?

The Steam Workshop will soon contain even bigger mods for Skyrim as Bethesda is updating things to remove the 100MB file size limit, allowing for mods of any size. The feature is currently being beta tested before going live, those that want to can get in on the beta.

The creation kit is getting a new update, supporting unlimited file sizes for mods on the Steam Workshop. The preview image for each mod is limited to 1MB in size though.

The second update is coming to the Skyrim Launcher. The launcher will no longer download mods from the Steam Workshop, they will now be managed by the Steam client instead. The Skyrim launcher will then update the game after the Steam Client finishes its download.

If you would like to beta test the upcoming feature updates for the Skyrim Launcher and the creation kit then you have to right-click on each program in your Steam library, select properties, select the beta tab and opt in.

It was bound to happen eventually, just like the cease and desist notice that will follow its popularisation, but Defense of the Legends is a new modification being worked on for Valve's DotA 2 and it changes the game quite dramatically, with the eventual intention of making it so you can essentially play League of Legends, in DotA 2.

As it stands, the project is in the very early stages of development, with just the map and some of its basics like creep spawning being worked on and that's not too surprising considering the creator is working alone. However, they have said that once the map is ready to go, they'll invite otters to contribute in porting over champions, abilities and other aspects of League of Legends so that ultimately, the two games' champions can battle it out head to head.

creeps
The most recent successful feature implementation added creeps to the game

Ultimately this could lead to some interesting new game modes, as the creator explains: “I’ll try adding multiple game types, eg. Hero vs Champs on a 50:50 map, Heros and Champs mixed on either map, free item mode where you can build either game's items as a hero or champion! But  all this comes after a lot of other things.”

Each champion will take a lot of work however, since they'll need to essentially be recreated to fit the visual fidelity and theme of DotA 2's Source 2 engine, so there's much work to be done. If you want to help out, you can read more or pledge your support at the official project page.
