EA’s annual FIFA franchise has been criticised lately for its lack of innovation and new content due in part to its annual release. While the annual rate of release is continuing, FIFA 23 will reportedly come with some major new features.

As reported by industry insider Tom Henderson and xfire, FIFA 23 will arrive with cross-play for the first time in the franchise’s history – allowing for increased longevity of the games thanks to a larger player pool. Interestingly, Henderson only mentions Xbox, PlayStation and PC, suggesting that the Switch version may not support the feature.

Perhaps even bigger news is the fact that FIFA 23 is said to feature both the men’s and women’s World Cups for the first time, helping to push the FIFA franchise towards equality (as the 2019 Women’s World Cup was watched by over a Billion people).

At the same time, Henderson reported that Russian teams will be removed from current FIFA titles due to the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia’s Vladamir Putin. This is an odd decision by EA – especially as there is very little linkage between the two – but it is representative of the confusing times that we are in.

Cheating is always something that plagues online multiplayer games but the situation gets seedier when there is real-world money to be won through tournaments. This week, Epic addressed the first week of Fortnite World Cup Qualifier matches, with hundreds of players having to forfeit their earnings due to cheating.

Cheating in a tournament setting can take many forms. Beyond ESP or aimbot hacks, you also get player ghosting, teaming, account sharing and even region lock avoidance. In total, 1163 Fortnite accounts were banned for two weeks for side-stepping region locks. These players did this to have multiple attempts at qualifying for the World Cup. Due to this, 196 players won't be receiving their prize money.

An additional 48 accounts were banned for seven days due to account sharing. A process in which you hand your account over to a more skilled player to have a better chance of winning. An additional eight accounts were banned for ‘teaming', a process in which two or more players group up in a solo lobby for a better chance of winning.

One person was banned for 72 hours for disconnecting from the live match to avoid giving points to another player. Finally, just one account was banned permanently for using cheat software.

KitGuru Says: The Fortnite World Cup has a $100 million prize pool associated with it, spreading across the weekly qualifier matches and leading up to the big finale. With so much money on the line, Epic Games is going to need to continue being diligent with cheat detection in all forms in order to keep the competition fair.

Although the fate of Germany in this year's European Championship is still set to be decided, the German robot football team's is far more certain: they are the champions. The American team opposite them in the finals put up a good fight, but when it came down to penalties, the German team was superior.

robotfootball

The Robot Football World Cup is an annual competition that sees robotics designers and enthusiasts from all over the world compete to see if their team of five robots can score more goals and make more saves than the opposition. Teams compete in a number of categories, though the main finals of the Standard Platform all use the same ‘Nao' bipedal robot.

There are other leagues and contests that take place with less typical robots, but Nao is a two-legged, two-armed robot with much the same physical capabilities as real humans – they just operate a little slower. That doesn't mean they can't pull off some exciting moves though, as highlights of the World Cup show.

Although a lot of teams entered the competition, none from the UK made it into the knock-out stages. The finals had strong competition though, with both the German team and one from the U.S. putting on such strong defence, that neither team could score.

When it came to penalties though, that was very different. The U.S. team failed to score again, but the German team was able to put away three goals out of five, crowning them the champions. As the Telegraph points out, this is redemptive for the developers on the German team, as they lost to an Australian team in last year's final.

KitGuru Says: Although we're still a few decades off of these little guys being able to compete with humans, you can see it coming. Will we even want to watch humans play sports any more when we can watch robots do it to a higher standard instead?

While most of us might still be trying to perfect our aerial shots on Rocket League, the ability to manipulate the ball without a human foot going anywhere near it has been pushed to the limits at the 19th annual robot world cup, held in China as part of the RoboCup games. This time around, a team of Australian researchers took home the gold.

robotfootball

Although there are different leagues for teams to take part in, with various parameters for the types of robots used, in the Standard League, everyone has to use the same ones, so it's more of a programming challenge than an engineering one. However the AI aboard the foot high, bipedal robots has to work cooperatively with its fellow teammates, whilst working against the other team. Programming that in the real world is very difficult.

As pointed out by one of the members of the winning team in the video above, the software running in the background determines everything from the placement and movement of the robots, to what role they occupy at any one time. A goalkeeper needs to be able to bend down and scoop the ball, whereas the others must be more foot focused.

Although statistics from this year's RoboCup have yet to be announced, the 2014 competition saw some 258 teams take part from 45 different countries. This year's event is expected to be even bigger.

There's a lot of nonsense prediction engines that show up during big sporting events, usually animal based. Whether it's an elephant eating this over that, or an octopus that goes for that fish over this one, it's all pretty random and any real correct predictions are likely based on the luck of a 50/50 choice. However, can the same be said for Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana? Or at least, the Bing prediction engine behind her, which has drummed up 14 correct predictions in a row for the final rounds of the World Cup.

With Argentina's victory over The Netherlands, the Bing engine tallied up another correct prediction, continuing on from its originally quite controversial decision that Brazil would lose to Germany. However it didn't predict such a drubbing as was dished out by the East European side, as Cortana won't be drawn on scores, merely predicting the overall outcome.

So who does Cortana think will win the world cup overall? Germany.

prediction

You can only check out the live prediction yourself if you're based in the US unfortunately, as that seems to be where the prediction tool is being trialled. Attempting to visit it from the UK, tells you that it isn't available in my region yet.

Proxies are a possibility of course, but then again, the easiest way is just to keep an eye on the Twitter feed of Marcus Ash, group manager for Cortana on Windows Phone, as he's been tweeting Cortana predictions like a proud dad.

Bing/Cortana comes up with its predictions using a variety of statistics. It takes into account previous win/loss ratios of teams and individual players, home field advantage, playing surface, game-time weather conditions and predictions from betting outlets.

KitGuru Says: This is quite an impressive achievement. Could analytical predictions like this cause problems for competitions like the World Cup in the future? What if it reaches a point one day where all sporting outcomes are determined before anyone even steps on the field?

Networked storage maker Synology has today announced the beginning of a World Cup themed competition on its Twitter, giving fans the chance to win one of five Hauppage picoStick Golds, just by tweeting a World Cup themed picture with their NAS in it.

It can be as simple as you sending over a picture of you stood by your Synology NAS wearing your country's kit, or snap a shot the next time your team is playing; just make sure your NAS is still in frame and you'll make it into prize draw. Synology will be picking its favourites though, not just randomly choosing winners, so you may need to get creative to really stand out.

picostick

The prizes are five picoStick TV tuners, giving your PC access to full TV through a small USB device (one of the tiniest in the world). It's very low power and doesn't block other USB ports and even comes with a small extending aerial for a boosted signal.

So to be in with a chance of winning, make sure you send your pictures through to @SynologyUK, perhaps with a couple of funny hashtags to really grab its attention. The competition will run from now right through until the end of the World Cup.

If you thought Elysium was dull, overlong and had only one (barely) passable feature – the super power making exoskeleton – you'd be right. But if you also thought that it'll be a long time before we're able to put together that sort of technology, you'd be wrong. At the start of the World Cup this year, a paralyzed teenager will kick the first ceremonial ball, aided only by a brain powered exoskeleton.

Ok they're not going to be punching people really hard or whatever else it was good for besides the poster shot – seriously did Matt Damon do anything interesting with that suit in the movie? I barely remember and I only watched it two weeks ago – but the fact that someone who previously couldn't locomote themselves can then stand and complete a maneuver that involves standing on one leg and distributing weight and power from one to the other, should be very impressive.

walkagainproject
Source: Walk Again Project

This is all thanks to the Walk Again Project, a non-profit collaboration between a bunch of different educational organisations and medical science initiatives, which developed “microwires,” which are able to detect very specific electrical signals from the brain and translate that to movement in the exoskeleton. So far these wires have been implanted in the brains of rats and monkeys to achieve the same results, but with further improvements it's set to be applied to a human.

Never fear though, those wires won't be going into the teen's brain. They'll instead be using a non-invasive head piece that performs the same function as the wires. Before being equipped with it though, the young person taking on the role of our first cyborg will be trained in virtual reality to use their new limbs.

KitGuru Says: It's good to know that if we ever bump into a Xenomorph alien race, that we're heading towards a time where we'll easily be able to box a queen into submission with a giant robot cargo lifter.

The days of building a slightly better mouse trap and waiting for the customers to bang down your door are gone. These days, marketing is everything. Ahead of CeBIT 2013 and the showcasing of its latest APU products, KitGuru catches up with the chap who's taken over generating demand for AMD's components across EMEA, Max Muth.

First things first, we can confirm that Max is not now – nor has he even been – a professional model. We thought we'd get that in, just in case you spend the next 10 minutes thinking ‘He looks damn familiar, was it a TV advert?'

Even a brief conversation with Max will reveal that he'd much rather be scoring Germany's winning hat trick against Brazil in the world cup final than doing catwalk.

Sure, Max Muth is enthusiastic about APUs and all that jazz, but let's not mess around - we know what he's thinking of most of the time. It's just how geezers is wired.

.

So how did Max come to component marketing?

“Well, I have been with AMD since 2009”, he told us. “After 4 years driving sales for the German speaking countries in central Europe, I wanted to try something else and marketing is something I've always been interested in”. Fair point.

Selling has the glamour and money, when it's going well, but it's also the fuzzy end of the lollipop when the marketing isn't right. What can Max do to help get the balance right?

“Looking at the IDC data, you can see that the vast majority of systems sell in the sub €700 market, but most of the coverage you see on products targets much more expensive solutions”, he explained. “I'm interested in getting more focus on the markets where AMD has a clear win”.

“The performance market is important”, said Max. “But value for money is crucial in the modern economy. Customers need to be looking at getting overall balance – making sure they don't end up with top heavy systems that have huge processors coupled with weak graphics and a lack of other technologies like SSD”.

No one at KitGuru would suggest that AMD should get in the ring with an overclocked ‘K' processor. The gap at the top is clear, but how can Max help get more balanced matches?

“Right now, the FX-8350 processor can help create a great overclocked system”, said Max. “And, with the money you save from buying something like a more expensive ‘k' processor from a competitor, you could upgrade your standard drive to an SSD, which will accelerate everything you do”.

Single focus then?

“Actually, no”, he replied. “The gap gets larger, the lower the price goes. With AMD you're not limited to a handful of high end chips for overclocking. You can pick the processor that best suits your budget, then clock it hard”.

Fair point. We have seen an increase in cheaper overclocked systems from companies like Overclockers, Scan and Aria – the latter of which has overclocked systems from as little as £300, which just isn't possible with a ‘k' chip from Intel.

We'd previously noted that Max lists ‘Ingredient Branding' on his LinkedIn profile. Does he have a special attachment for strudel apples ?

“Not exactly”, he smiled. “I like to give focus to all of the component parts – not just the complete system. AMD occupies a unique position with regard to the range of products we produce – no one else has a portfolio quite like it”.

We did also ask him about the impact having all of the next gen consoles might have on the graphics market, specifically how early access to game code may go some way to nullifying TWIMTBP – but he declined to comment on unannounced products. Surprise.

A lot of work ahead. We asked Max for a final comment, “‘Well done' is better than ‘well said'”. Actions speak louder than words. Nice.

There is a Richland of opportunity waiting - if AMD can get its APU message right

.

KitGuru says: Our casual chat with Max brought up some interesting points. While the Core i5 3570k and Core i7 3770k rock like nothing else, you can't help missing the old Core i3 520/30/40 processors – which brought overclocking opportunities to those who needed them most. AMD has several advantages, but will it be able to communicate them to the general public?

If you're one of the few people in the world that has dropped the £20k plus that you'd need in order to get hold of an ultra high definition TV and you happen to live in Japan, then you're in luck, as you'll actually be able to do more than watch four HD movies simultaneously as of next year. In 2014, UHDTV broadcasts are expected to begin.

If it follows through with these intentions, this puts the Japanese broadcasting industry ahead of the rest of the world by nearly two years. The plan is to get it all ready for the World Cup in 2014, though as a non-fan of the sport, it's hard to see why you really need to see the ball in more detail than HD.

Brazil
Does this really need a 4x HD resolution? Photo: Link2, Ronnie Macdonald.

Here in the UK, the Telegraph reports there have been several trials of the 4k technology, but there are no plans for a commercial launch as of yet. Admittedly that's because nobody has one of these TVs, but then we're sat holding a chicken and an egg and asking someone to please just go first.

Of course TV makers like LG and Sony would rather it was the TV services, but of course broadcasters want more available TVs, so for now we'll just have to wait. Chances are it'll be much easier for companies like Netflix to introduce UHD streams and that will gradually lead to an uptake in these televisions.

KitGuru Says: Of course the fact that they're all around 80 inches in size will always be a limiting factor as there's only so many homes that could fit such a giant set.

A hush has fallen over many parts of the world – and yet for the countries unaffected by this latest interruption to business, there is absolutely no sign that anything is going on. OK, that's weird. KitGuru dons the pads and heads to the crease.

It's not often that media companies put ‘rights issues' to one side and come to stand together – arm in arm – but the Cricket World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan has created exactly that spirit.

It would take poor Steve Jobs 30 years to satisfy this crowd

The Indian sub-continent has come to a standstill and the effects are being felt across the globe as communities gather around whatever piece of HD broadcasting technology they can get their hands on – just to watch this match.

The match is in the process of setting some significant records, including:-

  • Biggest ever viewing figures for a cricket match
  • Biggest in-programme advertising rates ever seenfor the sub-continent
  • Most expensive match day tickets ever for a cricket match
  • Most applications ever to be in the LG-sponsored cheer-leading squad (over 50,000 applicants)
  • The match has brought together the Prime Ministers of both countries for peace talks

Can sport really unite people? We'd like to think so.

Think this story is not about technology? OK. No problem. Here's a tech-fact for you. If Apple produced 50 million iPads a year, then it would take them about 30 years to supply one each to the ‘interested audience' for this semi-final. Stunning.

KitGuru says: We don't really get it with Cricket. We really don't. But plenty of you do!
