World of Tanks is a hugely popular MMO with a focus on PvP encounters all taking place between historical tanks. Since its launch in 2010, the game has seen massive success across its many platforms, including PC. While PC players in the past would have to install and launch the game via a dedicated launcher, World of Tanks has announced that it will soon be coming to Steam.

Though no specific date was given (aside from a vague 2021 release), the World of Tanks team announced that “We’ve always wanted to make sure World of Tanks was available to everyone, so it’s a natural step that we welcome the Steam community to our family. Soon, Steam users will be able to enjoy the hard-hitting battles only our game provides, and we really hope they enjoy them!”

Unfortunately, as “World of Tanks wasn't initially designed as a game for several PC platforms”, those who download the game through Steam will not be able to transfer their account and save data, meaning players will have to start their progress from scratch. That being said, for those who are new to the game, the Steam version of World of Tanks will be updated at the same time as the dedicated launcher version, meaning there will not be any disparity in features.

Since its launch in 2010, the free-to-play game has amassed a user base of over 160 million players. It will be interesting to see whether them joining Steam will only further increase these figures.

KitGuru says: What do you think of World of Tanks? Have you played the game? What other PC games would you like to see added to Steam? Let us know down below.

Popular free-to-play tank sim, World of Tanks, is to receive an update which will let anyone with a DirectX 11 graphics card enable ray tracing within the game – so you don't need an RTX 20-series GPU.

At World of Tanks' annual ‘Wargaming Fest: Tanker Day' event, it was announced that Intel is working with World of Tanks’ developers to bring ray tracing technology to the game. This marks a shift from the current crop of games that support ray tracing, as those have been announced in collaboration with Nvidia RTX. Now, thanks to Intel’s OneAPI rendering Toolkit which is behind this update, any DX11 GPU will be able to turn on ray traced shadows – regardless of whether it is an AMD or Nvidia card.

There are a couple things to note with this update, however. Firstly, as mentioned on the World of Tanks website, users will be able to toggle the lighting effects on and off, but it will only apply to ‘not destroyed vehicles'. Secondly, there are no details of what kind of performance drop gamers can expect from this implementation of ray tracing.

Intel is currently in the process of bringing their own line up of XE graphics cards to market, so this update to World of Tanks may give us a hint of what’s to come from Intel in the GPU sector. According to the official World of Tanks website, the ray tracing update is still in development, so a possible release date is currently unknown.

KitGuru says: Do you play World of Tanks? What do you think about this announcement to add ray tracing to the game, and more so, being able to use it on any DirectX 11 graphics card?

We've heard a lot of game developers attack Microsoft's game update policies in the past few years, with indie developers lining up alongside the big developers to do so. They've trashed the long Q&A process and the fees involved and Wargaming.net is no different. However, it's also said that it's now working with Microsoft to improve the process.

As it stands, Microsoft' system for updates on its Xbox platform is “totally unacceptable for meaninful free-to-play,” said the current CEO of Wargaming, Victor Kislyi, in an interview with Polygon. He described how one of the biggest plus points of a free to play online game, was that it allowed for quick responses to any problems – not so with the Xbox 360.

“The QA process and certification process take an extremely long time,” he said. “Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play. We are working with them to do quicker updates.”

World of Tanks is heading to the 360 in the near future. You can sign up for the beta here.

As it stands, those wanting to release a patch for their Xbox 360 title, need to wait through the lengthy Microsoft testing and quality assurance procedures and until recently, they had to stump up a $40,000 fee (£26,000) as well.

However, Wargaming is said to be working with Microsoft to improve the pace of the update procedure, but Kislyi didn't explain if there would be a platform wide change, or just one for Wargaming's upcoming release of World of Tanks on the 360.

“We will see, there is a lot of work on the technically side and on the administrative side which should resolve in the acceptable quality of the product, including updates of the product including speed and rates. So we will see,” he said.

KitGuru Says: The long updates and fee structure made it especially hard for indie developers to stay current and turn a profit, so it's good things re taking a turn of the simpler.

One of the biggest concerns people have with free to play games, is that by monetising them through unlocks or experience boosters, it can often make it far easier to make your way through game content or unlock more powerful stuff, if you simply dump cash into the game instead of actually playing. In order to cauterise this stigma and make its games more competitive, Wargaming, the developer of World of Tanks, has announced it will be removing any gameplay advantages from micro-transactions.

“We don't want to nickel and dime our players – we want to deliver gaming experiences and services that are based on the fair treatment of our players, whether they spend money in-game or not,” said VP of publishing Andrei Yarantsau (via PCGamesN).

Until recently, it was par for the course to spend hundreds on getting the biggest gun barrel possible. Because… you know.

Ultimately, he said, World of Tanks and the upcoming companion titles World of Warplanes and World of Warships, should present an even playing field for everyone that joins. On top of that though, Wargaming is keen to push into the lucrative Esports business, something that MMOs don't have a history of making much of an impact on.

“Our new World of Tanks features, including recent changes in our business model, are aimed at further growing our games in this direction,” Yarantsau said. “Professional sport – and gaming is no exception – is about fair competition. The introduction of our new free-to-win system will really help facilitate the development of World of Tanks as a true eSports discipline.”

KitGuru Says: Do you guys like the sound of where this is going? I've never really thought abut MMOs as being esports compatible, but I suppose at the top end there's no reason why not.

If you play World of Tanks, listen up. Developer Wargaming is urging everyone to change their passwords, after a possible breach of security, “may have compromised,” user information. It's unknown at this point what if any information was taken by those responsible for the breach, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Wargaming said in a statement: “As a part of usual security practices, we recently became aware that some personal information may have been compromised due to a security incident. We immediately launched an investigation into the incident and can assure you that no financial information was accessed. However, we believe that some password hashes and email addresses were affected by the compromise.”

As an added incentive to change your password – beyond not having your account hacked and stolen – Wargaming is gifting those that do, 300 in-game Gold, which according to CVG is enough to get yourself a Premium Account for one day, giving you the chance to research new vehicles far quicker than on standard accounts.

KitGuru Says: Not a big story this, but worth getting out there. Be safe guys, change your passwords.

In terms of popularity at least.

We've heard before how League of Legends has amassed 30 million + active players per month and over a billion hours of play time during that same period. While World of Tanks can't boast quite as much, it's certainly catching up.

In a new infographic released by developer Wargaming, it shows some of the insane stats that come about when you have as many players as World of Tanks does. With 45,000,000 in total, the game has a consistent 600,000+ battling each other at one time. This has amounted to over two billion hours of game play – as much as all Halo games put together – which is the equivalent of one player fighting for 230,000 years.

With that much conflict going on, it's not surprising that over 13 billion tanks have been wrecked and 140 billion shells fired.

Social network stats are also bandied around, with over half a million Facebook likes and 60,000 Twitter followers – the latter number doesn't seem that impressive but hey, up against multiple billions, not much else does.

Here's the graphic in all its ridiculously long glory:

How many of the world's top teams, any game or sport, require you to be able to perform while drinking copious quantities of Russian falling-down-water?  Not many. But we've found one. KitGuru prepares to open up the Matryoshka surrounding this online phenomenon.

Victor Kislyi's development company is called Wargaming.net and they have headquarters both in Minsk, Belarus-ski as well as London, UK-ville. No Nigel-Newcomer, these guys have been bashing out the quality code since 1998, but their latest assault on the gaming market has taken the world by storm.

World of Tanks is a free-to-play game which relies on you wanting to spend modest amounts of money, within the game, to improve your chances of kicking arse. Here's a PCTV take on World of Tanks, pure spirit style!

KitGuru says: We've been reliably informed by native Russian speakers/players, that the very best teams competing online – consist of members who much prove they are absolutely smashed on Stoly. We can't confirm this 100%, but the game certainly resonates with the red square rebels. Here's a PCTV take on World of Tanks, pure spirit style!
