We've seen G.SKILL memory used to break plenty of overclocking records over the years and that trend isn't slowing down in 2024. This week, G.Skill announced that South Korean overclocker, SAFEDISK, has set a new SuperPi-32M world record using Trident Z5 DDR5 memory.

In collaboration with Asus ROG, Intel and G.Skill, the extreme overclocker known as SAFEDISK has set a new SuperPi-32M overclocking world record, completing the benchmark in under 3 minutes. The system that achieved this record was equipped with G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5 memory, an ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Apex Encore motherboard and an Intel Core i9-1400KF.

The memory was overclocked to an impressive DDR5-9052 with 32-48-45-36 timings with Liquid Nitrogen used for cooling, allowing the CPU to reach as low as -188°C and the memory as low as -60°C.

While these memory speeds are currently only achievable with extreme cooling methods, DDR5 memory speeds are still improving, with standard kits available with speeds of up to 8000MHz.

The Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer has been live for a little over one day and as expected, it has taken over the internet. Within one day, the new trailer reached the lifetime views of the original GTA V reveal, amassing over 104 million views on YouTube alone.

This is just one stat, the trailer has also been viewed millions of other times via re-uploads and shares on social networks like Twitter. To make matters more impressive, Guinness World Records has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 already holds three world records.

As of now, the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer holds records for the most viewed video game reveal on YouTube, the most liked video game trailer and the most viewed non-music YouTube video in 24 hours.

Naturally, Rockstar's parent company, Take Two, has also seen a rise in shares following the game's announcement. So far, it looks like Grand Theft Auto 6 is going to garner the same level of hype and success as GTA V all those years ago.

The game isn't coming out for a while though. Rockstar plans to release the game for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles sometime in 2025. Then, we'll likely have a 1-2 year wait before the PC version comes along.

At the press conference covering the launch of the new Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000WX series, AMD claimed that the new Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX would be capable of scoring over 184K points in Cinebench R23 if overclocked. However, it seems AMD underestimated the capabilities of professional overclockers.

According to QuasarZone (via VideoCardz), AMD's press conference held last month included a PowerPoint presentation where the company claimed that the Threadripper Pro 7995WX could beat the Cinebench R23 record holder of the time with ease if overclocked properly. The presentation stated that the Ryzen Threadripper 7995WX could score 184,028 points, probably using LN2 cooling. At that moment, the world record stood at 147668 points, set on a dual EPYC CPU machine with 192 cores.

Recently, we've seen the 7995WX score 161K points on the Cinebench R23 under air cooling and 167K points under water cooling, but it seems the chip has even more potential. Some overclockers who got their hands on Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX samples have started to play with these CPUs and tested them, namely Sampson and DogFace.

Using the cooling capabilities of liquid nitrogen and a massive copper heatsink, DogFace pushed an AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX to a whopping 183,391 points, getting pretty close to AMD's claims. However, Sampson beat AMD's expectations, scoring 186,756 points with a sample of the same CPU and setting a new world record. Soon after, new records kept coming in, with safedisk being the top scorer at the time of writing with 210,702 points.

AMD has held the record for highest clock speed ever achieved by a CPU for quite some time. The previous record was set using an FX-8370, and that chip hasn't been dethroned since. That has now changed, with an overclocker managing to set a new clock speed record, pushing an Intel Core i9-13900K to 8,812.25MHz.

The AMD FX-8370 has held the record for the highest-clocked processor since August 2014, with a clock speed of 8,722.78 MHz. Eight years have passed since then, and we finally have a new clock speed king. The new record-holder is the just-released Intel Core i9-13900K, pushed to 8,812.25MHz using an Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Apex motherboard. The overclock was achieved by none other than Elmor.

Considering the 5.8GHz clock speed out of the box, we were already expecting overclockers would be able to push the chip higher than stock figures. Still, we couldn't have anticipated that the 8-year-old clock speed record would be broken immediately after the chip's release.

Besides the record clock speed registered on the Asus ROG Maximums Z790 Apex motherboard, Asus also shared that lupin_no_musume achieved a DDR5 memory frequency of 11130MT/s and safedisk completed the SuperPi 32M in just 3 minutes and 4.054 seconds.

Beyond Good & Evil evolved into a cult classic for Ubisoft and the game is still talked about fondly today. Unfortunately for fans of the game, it has been a long, long wait for the sequel. As of this year, Beyond Good & Evil 2 should now become the world record holder for the longest game in development.

Ubisoft first announced Beyond Good & Evil 2 with a CGI trailer back in 2008. The game was never cancelled, but it did drop off the face of the earth for a number of years, before reappearing at Ubisoft's E3 2017 conference.

As pointed out by Brendan Sinclair, Managing Editor at GI.biz (via Eurogamer), Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been ‘in development' for 5,234 days, which would give it the Guinness World Record for the “longest development period for a videogame”. Currently Duke Nukem Forever still holds the title on the Guinness World Record website, with a development period of 5,156 days.

While Beyond Good & Evil 2 was never cancelled, it did go through periods where the project wasn't being actively worked on. The project has gone through several reboots over the years, and switched development teams. At the moment, the game is being worked on again under new leadership, and according to playtester sources, the game is still ‘years away'.

Overclockers just keep breaking the DDR5 memory frequency world record. As of now, Lupin_No_Musume is the record holder for the fastest DDR5 memory, scoring a whopping 9,560 Mbps using a single G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 module under LN2 cooling.

The new DDR5 memory world record entry shared by Buildzoid suggests overclockers still have plenty of room to push frequencies even higher. Just two weeks ago, the same individual set the highest DDR5 frequency record at 8,888MHz. It shouldn't take long before overclockers can break the 10,000MHz mark at this pace.

To achieve the new world record using a 16GB G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 memory module (originally DDR5-6000 CL40), the overclocker used an Asus Z690 Apex motherboard and an Intel Core i9-12900K.

As expected, liquid nitrogen cooling was used to keep temperatures in check. With this setup, the memory was pushed to 9,560 Mbps with CL127-120-120-120-127-2 timings.

It's too soon to know if we will ever get this speed using standard cooling methods, but we do know that faster DDR5 memory modules are on the way, and we should expect continued speed improvements in the years ahead.

Since the launch of DDR5 in late 2021, G.Skill has been hard at work to push speeds to new heights. This week, the company revealed that in its latest overclocking collaboration with ASUS, a new DDR5 world record has been set.

Working with ASUS and extreme overclocker “lupin_no_musume”, G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5 memory was pushed to DDR5-8888 speeds, breaking the previous world record set back in November. The rest of the system used for this overclock included an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 APEX motherboard and an Intel Core i9-12900K processor.

As you might expect, pushing memory to DDR5-8888 speeds with CL88-88-88-88 timings does require extreme cooling methods. In this instance. LN2 was used. Speaking on the new record, G.Skill VP, Tequila Huang, said: “This demonstrates the unparalleled overclocking potential of DDR5, and we will continue to dedicate effort into developing faster DDR5 memory for overclockers and PC enthusiasts.”

Currently, consumer DDR5 memory kits top out at 6800MHz, but we do know that 7000MHz+ kits are in development, so we should see even faster speeds for consumers soon.

The DDR5 generation has officially begun and overclockers are quickly racing to set some new world records. Throughout the DDR4 generation, G.Skill was at the forefront of overclocking, with its memory being used to break world records a number of times. That won't be changing with jump to DDR5, with G.Skill Trident Z5 breaking a world record already.

Trident Z5 is G.Skill's premier DDR5 memory solution, aiming to offer the highest speeds to consumers. On the 4th of November, a system featuring an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 APEX motherboard and an Intel Core i7-12700KF processor was used to set the world record for DDR5 memory speed, reaching 8704MHz.

G.Skill, ASUS and extreme overclocker “hocayu” worked together to set this record, using LN2 to cool the system to subzero temperatures and push the memory to its absolute limits. In the gallery above, you can see the validation screenshots.

This extreme overclock comes just days after G.Skill achieved 7000MHz speeds on its Trident Z5 DDR5 memory modules. We're still early in the DDR5 generation, so consumers can expect speeds of up to 6800MHz for now, but companies are already working on memory targeting speeds above the 7GHz mark, so there is still plenty of room for the DDR5 market to grow.

Back in April, a new and sealed copy of the original Super Mario Bros. sold for a record $660,000 at auction. Now, a perfect copy of Super Mario 64 has also been sold, setting a new record with a price tag of $1.56 million.

As with the previous auctions, the Super Mario 64 sale was held through Heritage Auctions, starting the bidding off at $100,000 for a sealed, 1996 US copy of the game. It didn't take long for the bids to rack up, reaching as high as $1.56 million, the most money ever spent on single copy of a video game.

Some of the reasons for the high price tag include Super Mario 64's cultural significance and its important history. There are thought to be less than five sealed copies of Super Mario 64 left in this condition, so we could see a future auction break this record once again.

Nintendo also recently celebrated Super Mario 64 with a limited-time re-release for the Nintendo Switch, which is no longer in print.

A while back, renowned overclocker, Der8auer, broke the 3DMark Fire Strike world record with a massive 3.2GHz overclock on an RX 6900 XT Liquid Devil graphics card. Now, that record appears to have been broken, this time by a separate group pushing an RX 6900 XT at 3.3GHz.

As reported by Videocardz, Team OGS has overclocked their own RX 6900 XT, featuring a Navi 21 XTXH GPU, to 3.3GHz. At these speeds, the card was able to score 37,618 points in Fire Strike, with a 41,069 graphics score. These results earn Team OGS the number 1 ranking on HWBot.

This was somewhat expected, as the original RX 6900 XT cards using Navi 21 XT chips were locked at 3GHz in the BIOS. AMD later began sending Navi 21 XTXH GPUs to partners, which are pre-binned chips with higher overclocking capabilities.

So far, ASRock, Sapphire, PowerColour and ASUS have new top-end, liquid-cooled RX 6900 XT graphics cards with the binned Navi 21 XTXH chip.

Earlier this month, HyperX and MSI were able to set a new DDR4 memory overclocking world record, reaching speeds of 7156MHz. Now, just a few weeks later, this record has been broken, with MSI and HyperX hitting 7.2GHz speeds.

HyperX is of course the gaming division of Kingston (soon to be acquired by HP) and has served the memory market for decades now. This particular record-breaking overclock was achieved by the MSI OC team in Taiwan, using an 8GB HyperX 4600MHz Predator memory stick, an MSI MEG Z590 UNIFY-X motherboard and an 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900KF running at 3.5GHz.

The hardware setup is similar to what was used to set the 7156MHz record a few weeks ago, but the motherboard has been swapped out for a different one. This paved the way for the MSI OC team to reach 7200MHz this time around.

As you would expect, HyperX is very pleased with the result, with the company's DRAM business manager, Kristy Ernt, saying: “HyperX is thrilled to be part of this breakthrough in DDR4 overclocking history, with HyperX Predator memory used to set two world records within the past month. Our HyperX engineers continue to focus on improving high-speed yields to get faster products in the hands of our customers and push previously unattainable performance records.”

While you are unlikely to achieve an overclock this high at home using standard cooling methods, HyperX does sell a number of validated high-speed memory kits. The HyperX Predator DDR4 kit used here is available in speeds up to 4800MHz with latencies between CL12 and CL19. Single-dimm kits can be found in capacities of up to 32GB, if you get a kit with multiple dimms, you could install as much as 256GB of memory on a system.

We have a new world record holder for the fastest DDR4 memory. This week, HyperX announced that its 4600MHz Predator memory has been successfully overclocked to a whopping 7156MHz, the highest frequency achieved to date.

HyperX is of course the gaming division of Kingston and has served the memory market for decades now. This particular record-breaking overclock was achieved by the MSI OC team in Taiwan, using an 8GB HyperX 4600MHz Predator memory stick, an MSI MEG Z590I UNIFY motherboard and an 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900KF running at 3.5GHz.

The record breaking overclock has been validated with CPU-Z and the entry can be found on HWBOT. As you would expect, the HyperX team is extremely pleased with this result, with the company's DRAM business manager, Lavanya Pudoru, saying: “We are extremely thrilled and humbled to be part of this exemplary DDR4 overclocking achievement. Our engineers work continuously to improve higher-speed memory yields to bring faster solutions by pushing boundaries that break performance records and bring best-in-class products to our gaming memory community.”

All HyperX memory modules are Intel XMP-ready and ship with certified profiles for both the latest Intel and AMD chipsets.

KitGuru Says: Professional overclockers are in full swing at the moment following the launch of Intel's 11th Gen Core processors. 7.1GHz memory is one lofty achievement.

A new world record for memory frequency has been set this week, with one overclocker pushing a 16GB module of Crucial Ballistix Max DDR4 RAM to over 7000MHz.

The new record was achieved by overclocker ‘baby-J', using Crucial Ballistix Max DDR4-4000 memory. In order to achieve the massive 7000MHz memory frequency, LN2 cooling is used. Officially, the record was set at 7004.2MHz with 22-26-26-46 timings, but the screenshot uploaded by the overclocker shows a 7006.4MHz memory frequency. Nonetheless, when compared to the original frequency of this kit, this is an improvement of over 75%.

The previous record-holder bianbao XE, achieved an overclock of 6666MHz using the same memory modules, but the rest of the system differs quite a bit. Baby-J was able to cross the 7000MHz mark by using a Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G overclocked to 4.2GHz on an MSI B550 Unify-X motherboard. For those who don't know, the MSI B550 Unify-X is part of the company's enthusiast series and comes with only 2x DIMM slots, offering a clearer memory signal.

Putting this speed into perspective, 7000MHz is within the realm of speeds expected from DDR5 memory. DDR5 speeds are expected to start at 3200MHz and go up to 8400MHz, but we are unlikely to see DDR5 memory hit the market until later next year.

KitGuru says: How many of you overclock your RAM? What's the highest speed you've managed to achieve?

AMD has just launched the Radeon RX 6800 XT and it's already breaking world records. The widely known extreme overclocker Alva Jonathan aka “LUCKY_NOOB” has set a new world record for the 3DMark Firestrike using a reference design Radeon RX 6800 XT.

One important thing to mention in this result is that tessellation was disabled by Alva on 3DMark Firestrike so the card could reach a higher score. The HWBot ranking allows the tessellation to be disabled, but 3DMark Hall of Fame does not, meaning that the score won't appear on it.

The new world record to beat for 3DMark Firestrike on HWBot is 47932 marks. The system used by “LUCKY_NOOB” was using a 1200W Corsair PSU, G.Skill DDR4 RAM, an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU overclocked to 5.423GHz using liquid nitrogen, and a Radeon RX 6800 XT overclocked to 2650MHz (boost setting applied in Performance Tuning panel) using the reference cooler.

Considering that AMD still has a graphics card more powerful than the RX 6800 XT, we could see this record broken by the RX 6900 XT once it launches next month.

The previous record was held by safedisk, using an ROG Strix RTX 3090 OC graphics cards, which scored 47725 marks, about 207 marks less than the current record holder.

KitGuru says: It is always impressive to see what the professional overclockers can do with new hardware. Are any of you planning on picking up an RX 6800 XT? Wil you be overclocking yours once it arrives?

The EVGA RTX 3090 “K|NGP|N” had its power target reaching up to 141% and was overclocked, reaching a core clock of 2580MHz and a memory clock of 21.5Gbps. This is a 52% improvement over the stock boost clock of the RTX 3090, and 10.3% higher clocked than the stock 24GB of GDDR6X memory of the RTX 3090. This boost in frequencies resulted in a score of 16673 points in the 3DMark Port Royal benchmark, setting a new world record on this benchmark.

The rest of the system included a water-cooled Intel Core i9-10900KF overclocked to 5.2GHz, with the core voltage set to 1.451V, paired with 32GB of DDR4-4600 G.Skill memory with 14-14-14-28 timings.

As per @EVGA_JacobF, this graphics uses a hybrid system with a 360mm AIO cooler and a blower-like shroud, and an RGB OLED screen. Unlike the FE cards which use the new 12-pin power connector, this graphics card is powered by 3x 8-pin PCIe power connectors to deliver up to 525W, theoretically.

The EVGA RTX 3090 “K|NGP|N” isn't available yet, but according to Vince Lucido the new GeForce “K|NGP|N” graphics card will be available sooner than in previous generations.

Intel's 10th Gen Core desktop processors are out and the overclocking race has begun. We've already seen G.Skill pushing the boundaries of DDR4 memory speeds on Z490 motherboards, and MSI had a good showing with a 7.4GHz Core i9-10900K. ASUS might be taking the crown though, as the ROG Maximus XII Apex has been used to push a colossal 7.7GHz overclock.

ASUS ROG revealed the latest record this week. Jon ‘Elmor' Sandström and Pieter ‘Massmann’ Plaisier joined ASUS to push the Z490 chipset and new Intel 10th Gen CPUs to the limit with extreme overclocking. The result is a 7.7GHz overclock across all cores on an Intel Core i9-10900K.

To achieve this, Liquid Helium was used for cooling, shattering the frequency record on an Intel Core series CPU. Those weren't the only records broken though, the ROG Maximus XII Apex was also used to overclock G.Skill Trident Z memory to 6666MHz.

Beyond that, Asus Z490 motherboards have been used to break the single-core Geekbench 4 record and obtain number one positions for 10-core CPU scores in Geekbench 3, Cinebench R15 and wPrime 32M.

KitGuru Says: It is a shame we won't be seeing another Overclocking World Championship at Computex this year due to the COVID-19 situation. Even so, records are being broken remotely with the assistance of hardware companies, which is great to see.

It turns out that with some additional overclocking, even greater heights can be achieved, as G.Skill Trident Z Royal memory has been used to reach record speeds of 6666MHz.

Paired with an ASUS ROG Maximus XII APEX motherboard and an Intel Core i9-10900K processor, overclocker ‘BIANBAO' was able to set the record, which you can see being obtained in the video below:

Of course, extreme overclocking was used to reach this speed, so liquid nitrogen was used for cooling. It isn't a speed regular consumers will be able to hit for quite some time, but it is always interesting to see what hardware can achieve when pushed to the absolute limits.

If you are looking for high-speed memory that you can actually use in a personal rig, then you may want to check out G.Skill's new 5GHz DDR4 memory kits, which we reported on HERE.

We've regularly seen G.Skill memory breaking overclocking records over the summer months. Last year, G.Skill memory was used to set 23 new overclocking records and this year, G.Skill has become the first DDR4 memory maker to surpass 6GHz speeds.

Taiwanese professional overclocker, ‘Toppc', used G.Skill Trident Z Royal and the MSI MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC motherboard paired with a Core i9-9900K. Using this setup, DDR4 memory speeds were pushed all the way up to 6016.8MHz, the fastest DDR4 speed ever recorded.

This milestone comes just a few months after Toppc broke the DDR4 speed world record at Computex, pushing G.Skill memory up to 5886MHz. HWBot and CPU-Z validation has been included in the screenshots above.

Tequila Huang, Corporate VP at G.Skill, said that “achieving DDR4-6000MHz has been our goal for quite some time, and we are extremely excited to be able to achieve this major milestone with MSI”.

Now we'll just have to wait and see what the next milestone is, particularly with Samsung now producing A-die memory instead of B-die.

KitGuru Says: Another big milestone for G.Skill that pushes the boundaries of DDR4 even further. It will be interesting to see if this record can be broken in the months to come.

Each year, G.Skill comes to Computex with new RAM modules and a small army of professional overclockers to really push the technology as far as it can go. This year was no different, with G.Skill’s memory used to achieve 23 records last week, including a new world record for fastest DDR4 memory frequency.

The overclocker known as Toppc used G.Skill Trident Z Royal memory on an MSI MPG Z390I Gaming Edge AC motherboard to achieve speeds of 5886MHz, breaking the world record. Right now, the top two results for fastest memory frequency are set be Team MSI using this hardware setup.

Over the course of last week, the G.Skill OC stage was used to set 23 overclocking records in total. Amongst those competing was Kingpin, who broke the world record for 3DMark Time Spy in a quad-GPU set up, using four Kingpin GTX 1080Tis.

Overclocker ‘rsannino’ set the record for Geekbench 3’s multi-core test using an ASUS ROG Dominus Extreme motherboard and a 28-core Intel Xeon W-3175X, coming away with a score of 135,527. Even more records were broken using the ASRock X299 OC Formula motherboard, paired with some of Intel’s high-end Core-X CPUs, like the 16-core i9-9980X and the 18-core i9-9980XE.

KitGuru Says: G.Skill’s overclocking events at Computex are always interesting to follow and each year, we get increasingly impressive results. Congrats to all of the experts that took part this year!

Strongbox, a company known for its workstations and render farms, has teamed up with ASUS this week to break some world records. As part of a partnership with ASUS, Strongbox put together a rendering-focussed build featuring a whopping eight GTX 1080Tis. In all, the system ended up setting a new bar for rendering benchmarks.

The build is most notable for its use of all-ASUS components including chassis, motherboard and of course the 8x ASUS 1080TIs, using no special cooling techniques. The high performance computer was made as a stock machine for its existing customer, Jellyfish Animation, distinguished for its visual effects work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Kingsman: The Secret Service and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Strongbox scored 1620.82 using the Octane Render test, Octane Bench with the 8GPU crushing the previous record of 1498 for a Titan XP and previous high of 1397 for an equivalent 1080TI machine to take all 3 top places.

Strongbox claim that the benchmark test proves the Strongbox 8x GPU 4U HPC has “the best band for buck performance ratio in the world, beating the Titan XP at half the cost.” With the build hitting temperatures of 51ºC on full load and an ambient temperature of 22ºC while breaking world records, Jellyfish Animation certainly do have a powerhouse sitting in its London office.

KitGuru Says: Strongbox certainly know its craft well, but I would love to see the benchmarking results first hand. Hopefully the company continue to impress by aiming for more world records.

Gigabyte has been keeping busy since the launch of X299, bringing together some veteran overclockers to put the Gigabyte X299-SOC Champion motherboard to the test. It seems the tests taking place at Gigabyte's OC lab were successful too, as four new benchmarking records were set, using an Intel Core i7-7740K pushed all the way up to 7.5GHz.

The team of overclockers in this instance consisted of HiCookie and Sofos from Gigabyte alongside Team AU's Dinos22, Youngpro and SniperOZ. In order to push past the massive 7.5GHz barrier, this group used liquid helium, which dropped temperatures down to -250°C. The rest of the system consisted of a Gigabyte X299-SOC Champion motherboard, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 memory running at 4333MHz and a Corsair AX1500i power supply.

From there, world records were set in 3DMark03, 3DMark06 and Aquamark. The system configuration was a little different for benchmarking, featuring the same CPU at 7.1GHz and the same motherboard but adding an Aorus GTX 1080Ti graphics card and some G.Skill Trident-Z DDR4 memory running at 3600MHz. This system managed to set world records in all three benchmarks. Beyond that, a ‘global first' ranking was also achieved in 3DMark06 using a tweaked system configuration using two GTX 1080Tis instead of one.

All in all, it's an impressive first showing for Gigabyte's X299-SOC Champion motherboard, which is already an accomplished overclocking board.

KitGuru Says: I always enjoy seeing huge overclocks like this, especially when benchmarked. While 7.5GHz couldn't be used for benchmarking, the 7.1GHz overclock they settled on is still very impressive.

Just last week, Vince ‘Kingpin' Lucido was able to set a new 3DMark Time Spy record using a GTX 1080Ti clocked at 2.5GHz with LN2 cooling. Since then, he has been using an EVGA GTX 1080Ti and after putting it under liquid nitrogen, he was able to push it up to 3024MHz on the core.

The image above was shared over on the EVGA Facebook page, showing the 3024MHz core clock and 6003MHz memory clock achieved using the company's own Precision X software. We don't have benchmark results with this overclock in place just yet but hopefully it can remain stable enough to get some numbers.

KitGuru Says: It seems that the GTX 1080TI is really being put to work by professional overclockers. I'd be interested to see some benchmark results with the card running at such a high frequency.

It looks like the GTX 1080Ti is already being used to set new world records as this week, professional overclocker ‘Kingpin' was able to push the card as far as 2.5GHz. This insane overclock was then benchmarked, setting a new world record score in 3DMark.

As a competitive overclocker, Kingpin was using LN2 for cooling purposes, which is how he managed to get a 2.481GHz overclock on the GTX 1080Ti core. This base clock would then boost past the 2.5GHz mark at points during testing. He also went ahead and pushed the 11GB of GDDR5X memory as far as it would go, pushing past the 11GHz (effective) speed to 12.5GHz.

Image via: wccftech

This was achieved on one of Nvidia's Founders Edition reference GPUs, rather than a custom board from an AiB, so there was nothing embedded into the card's design to help push these overclocks outside of additional cooling. With this overclock, the GTX 1080Ti has a pixel fill rate of 197.4 GPixel/s and a texture fill rate of 612.7 GTexel/s.

As for the actual 3DMark record, this GTX 1080Ti was run through the Time Spy benchmark, scoring 13,291 points overall. This was achieved on an X99 system featuring an EVGA motherboard, Intel 6950x at 5.1GHz and 32GB of 3000MHz RAM. In all, this broke the previous record, which was achieved using a Titan X, scoring 12,548 points with a 2.3GHz overclock on the core.

KitGuru Says: While most people won't be using LN2 with their GPUs, this does go to show that the latest and greatest in Pascal's lineup can come with some hefty overclocking headroom for enthusiasts. It will be interesting to see what people can achieve once custom boards start coming out.

Ryzen might not be in the hands of consumers just yet but it looks like overclockers are already using AMD's latest and greatest to set overclocking records. This week, a portion of a video from AMD's Ryzen tech day leaked, at which AMD had professional overclockers pushing the R7 1800x to its limits across all eight cores while running Cinebench R15.

The video in question is from YouTuber Austin Evans who mistakenly uploaded it ahead of the embargo date. Naturally, the clip has been taken down from his official channel but someone was able to download it first and pop it on to Vimeo. In the video, Austin takes a look at a Ryzen 1800x clocked at 5.2 GHz across all cores with LN2 handling the cooling.

With this, the overclockers (who aren't named in the clip), were able to set a new world record Cinebench R15 score of 2449 cb, which is up from the previous record of 2410 cb, proving that the top-end Ryzen chip will be very fast indeed.

We have a review in the works for AMD's new Ryzen CPUs but it won't be live until sometime next week, so keep an eye out for that. We have all of the details on pricing and pre-orders, HERE. We were also in attendance at the Ryzen tech day, so you can see our first impressions of AMD's new tech, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Ryzen is shaping up to be very promising, particularly in the high-end. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the reviews drop next week. Are any of you planning on picking up Ryzen this year? Are you waiting for Ryzen 5 six core CPUs instead?

At this point, it is well known that Intel will be launching its next generation Kaby Lake processors this week alongside the Z270 platform and while reviews have yet to land, it looks like overclockers are already getting to grips with the new Core i7 7700K. Today, Overclocking team ‘BenchBros' broke several world records using the 7700K and an MSI Z270 XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard, pushing the chip past 7GHz.

BenchBros broke the world record for the Pifast benchmark, running the 7700K at 7070MHz, completing the benchmark in 8.97 seconds. In the SuperPi benchmark, the chip ran at 7030MHz and completed its run in 4 minutes and 22.54 seconds. This frequency was achieved using liquid nitrogen but according to the team, 5GHz is actually easily achievable on air with Kaby Lake.

A bunch of other impressive benchmark runs were completed at various frequencies using the MSI XPOWER Gaming Titanium motherboard, including:

  • Cinebench R15 at 6760Mz = 1502
  • Cinebench R11.5 at 6770MHz = 1657
  • GPUPI at 6800MHz = 3 minutes and 50.944 seconds.
  • WPrime 32M at 6800MHz = 2.921 seconds.
  • WPrime 2014M at 6730MHz = 93.109 seconds.
  • Geekbench at 6750MHz = 28733.

Although we'll never say never when it comes to a game like Donkey Kong, it may well be that the newly crowned champion, Wes Copeland, is never beaten. With  a score that not only defeated his arch arcade rival, Robbie Lakeman and even long-time MAME champion Dean Saglio, the 1,218,000 score Copeland achieved late last week could well be considered a perfect score.

If the last time you checked in with Donkey Kong records was watching King of Kong, I'm afraid the world of competitive DK play has moved well beyond the efforts of documentary stars Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe. At the time of writing, they sit at 19th and 18th best in the world, with their respective million+ scores. They're still great players no doubt, but the top crop in 2016 is much more capable.

dkscren2

Although Hank Chien, the long running DK champion still maintains a solid spot in the top four of world rankings, even his score today is far surpassed by the current champions of the game.

For the past month, Robbie Lakeman and newly crowned champion Wes Copeland have been going back and forth with solid scores, pushing the game to new heights using original arcade hardware. Lakeman's best ever result appeared on the 11th April, with 1,190,200 points.

A solid effort no doubt, but still shy of the 2013 MAME record set by Dean Saglio, of 1,206,800 points; a score that many considered practically unbeatable. Until Copeland swooped in and did so.

In a live-streamed effort, Copeland used his original Donkey Kong cabinet to make it all the way to the penultimate screen, after 115 boards/levels without losing a single life. That meant that he was able to deliberately lose three of his remaining four, in order to maximise his score before the final kill screen.

Watch live video from WesCopeland on www.twitch.tv

When he finally made it to that last board and the unbreachable ending of Donkey Kong was achieved, his score sat at 1,218,00, a score that will be nigh-impossible to beat.

Copeland himself won't be beating it any time soon either, as he has pledged to end his world record runs and only compete in live tournaments from now on. Others like Lakeman and Saglio may take up the torch in the hunt for an even more perfect game, but unless an unknown suddenly appears with new strategies or ways to generate a few extra points, it seems hard to imagine someone capturing Copeland's crown.

KitGuru Says: Congratulations to Copeland, as it seems likely his score will stand the test of time. Standing on the shoulders of the Donkey Kong giants that came before him, he made it through challenges that make modern games look pedestrian by comparison, all without losing a single life.

It's quite a gauntlet that he's thrown down. Any of you hardcore gamers fancy picking it up?

Dark Souls 3 has been out in Japan for a little while now and the speed runners have wasted no time in getting to work dissecting the game and figuring out the quickest ways to blast through it. One player in Japan has spent the last week and a half putting a ton of hours into the game and has already set the speed run world record for the game, beating it in under two hours.

The exact in-game time is 1 hour, 42 minutes and 10 seconds, which is very impressive. The full play through is already up on YouTube so you can see it for yourself:

2951283-dark-souls-iii_2015_10-15-15_005-e1458749847526

This was an any percentage run so the only rule was that the player had to make it to the end of the game as fast as possible, meaning they can skip areas or bosses where possible. This is likely just the first step too as speed running on Dark Souls is a pretty huge thing. Right now, the record on Dark Souls 2 is under twenty minutes so it will be interesting to see if anyone can get that close on Dark Souls 3.

KitGuru Says: I always find speed runs so interesting to watch, it must take a lot of skill to know a game so well that you can effectively cut the playtime down that much. What is the fastest any of you have beat a game?

The 1423 CineBench score was acheived using a Core i7 6700K running at 6.36Ghz using liquid nitrogen cooling. Unfortunately, at the time of this post going live, this particular score has already been beaten. While the CineBench first place rank may have been short lived, the Overclocking Knights still hold the world record with its 6.74 GHz Core i7 6700K overclock. This astonishing frequency was also achieved using liquid nitrogen cooling.

KitGuru Says: Getting a Core i7 to run at that frequency is no easy feat so these results are very impressive indeed. How important is overclocking to you? Does overclocking potential factor in to your motherboard purchases?

The 5GHz frequency milestone for computer memory is yet to be achieved, but professional overclockers are probably not far from hitting it. This week Chi-Kui Lam, a well-known computer tweaker, managed to push a DDR4 memory module from G.Skill to whopping 4.90GHz.

Chi-Kui Lam overclocked a 4GB G.Skill Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory module to record 4901.6MHz with CL21 31-31-63-2 timings. The module operated in single-channel mode, which is why the record clock-rate has little practical meaning: all modern memory sub-systems are multi-channel.

gskill_ripjaws4_ddr4_dimm

To set the record, the overclocker used an engineering sample of Intel Core i7-6700K “Skylake” processor downclocked to 2371.6MHz with three cores disabled. He also used an Asrock Z170 OC Formula mainboard as well as a 1300W power supply unit. The microprocessor and the module were cooled-down using liquid nitrogen.

image_id_1468023

Without any doubts, 4.90GHz is a great achievement that demonstrates potential of modern microprocessors, memory modules and mainboards. However, since Intel’s “Skylake” processors have dual-channel memory controllers, it makes more sense to use them with two moderately clocked memory modules than with one that runs at an extreme frequency. To date, the highest DDR4 clock-rate that has been hit by a dual-channel memory sub-system is 4.60GHz.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: 4901.6MHz is actually 63.6MHz faster than the previous DDR4 record set a week ago. Perhaps, in a couple of weeks’ time someone will finally manage to hit the “magic” 5GHz mark.
