For the first time in its multi-year history, League of Legends' Worlds has recrowned a set of kings from a previous win. There have been many champions over the years, but never has a team come back from winning previously and done it again; and that's exactly what SK Telecom T1 did at this year's Worlds, defeating KOO Tigers in the final and almost making it through the entire tournament without dropping a single game. They did before the end, but only just.

SKT won the League of Legends World Championships back in 2013 where they stomped Chinese team Royal Club in the final, but this year they were even more dominant, only falling once to the team they faced off in the final. Otherwise they went completely undefeated in the entire tournament.

Unfortunately for those hoping for Chinese team Edward Gaming – who defeated SKT at the mid-season invitational – to provide some measure of competition for the returning champions, they didn't, falling to Fnatic, who in turn were taken out by eventual finalists, KOO.

As much as defeating all competition and winning the million dollar grand prize for coming in first was a great achievement for the team though, defending it may prove much harder. Following their dominant win in 2013, SKT failed to even quality for the championship in 2014, and even came relatively low down the rankings in some regional tournaments – though one of their big losses did come to eventual 2014 champions, Samsung Galaxy White.

For now SK Telecom T1 has returned to Korea to a heroes welcome. Esports are celebrated heavily in the country, which is often credited with the its strong player base for many top professionally played games. That should guarantee the roster for SKT is well respected for some time too.

KitGuru Says: Having a European final made this World Championships a little easier to watch in this part of the world due to the lack of time difference. Did any of you watch the nail biting action live over the weekend?

One of the reasons that big franchises like Star Wars are still so popular today, is because of their fans and more specifically, the content that those fans create. You have fan films, fan art, fan costumes and of course, fan fiction. Delving into the world of the latter can leave you bewildered at the varying quality (not often great) and the fact that it's sometimes out-of-the-blue sexualised (regardless of genre) but it helps continue the love of a specific bit of fiction and that's great. Now though, Amazon is looking on how to monetise this mass of fan created content, by teaming up with several companies to sell fan-fiction to consumers, while giving the original creators a taste of the action.

It's called Kindle Worlds and it could open up a whole new audience for authors and help promote franchises by highlighting the best of the expanded fiction that fans have to offer.

However don't go expecting your Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, My Little Pony crossover graphic novel to make millions just yet, as so far Amazon has only teamed up with Warner Bros. Television Group's Alloy Entertainment. This gives them permission to sell fan fiction surrounding the shows: Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars and the Vampire Diaries.

Royalty rates have already been sorted out, with works over 10,000 words netting you 35 per cent of total sales. However, if you're doing a short story – between 5,000 and 10,000 words – expect only a 20 per cent cut. You'll also be giving all rights to your work to Amazon, so should that story be optioned by a publisher in the future, or if the original creators of the TV show/movie decide they want to use your characters or work, it's unlikely you'd have any claim to further payment. There also won't be any print options for your work, it'll be Kindle only and pricing is fixed between $0.99 and $3.99.

So just bear that in mind. If you submit work to this, you are getting completely bent over a barrel creatively. The price you pay for being able to sell work based around established characters, is that you have zero rights as the creator of new, but related content.

KitGuru Says: Personally I'm hoping Amazon do a deal with Games Workshop (though it'll never happen) and then I could publish by Ork epic that got a flat zero from Black Library's submission process.

We’re not in the habit of flagging special offers on KitGuru. There are specialist places for this … they’re called shops. But UK reseller Dabs just pinged us with an offer that made KitGuru almost choke on the Saturday morning cornflakes. Have things really moved this far?

KitGuru was at a network show in the nineties where HP demonstrated one of the first gigabit network connection, over a 1 metre cable, in a sealed test environment. Two years later, at the same event, HP was demonstrating the same speed of connection across a length of barbed wire. On August 31st 1999, Apple launched the Power Mac G4, the world’s first mass production system that shipped with gigabit Ethernet as standard. Now you get it glued on to the back of even the cheapest mainboards.

Such is the pace of development in networking, from a technological perspective, that it takes something pretty significant to surprise you.

The 802.11N spec went from draft format in 2007, to fully certified in October 2009.  Now it’s everywhere, but normally around £50. With the offer we received this morning and routers dipping toward £19 (€23 or $28), the number of high-speed access points is likely to grow massively.

David Atherton set up his business systems company a long time ago, and it's now owned by British Telecom. David was generally well liked in the industry and how he left was pretty shocking to most people.  The Buffalo router for 19 pounds and 99p might be a limited offer now, but it's probably a good indicator of where the ‘mass market' will be in the near future.

KitGuru says: It's hard to argue with this kind of price, but we have to be concerned that it might trash the price for other vendors like D-Link, Netgear and Belkin. Should we, as consumers, feel guilty that we find the best bargains in the bone piles of fallen competitors?
