Apple’s annual WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) has concluded, and alongside the official announcement of iOS17, new Macbooks and the company’s long-awaited AR/VR headset, Hideo Kojima made an appearance to reveal that Kojima Productions’ games are coming to MacOS.

During the MacOS section of Apple's latest WWDC event, the video game legend Hideo Kojima took to the digital stage to say “Hi, everyone, I’m super excited to be here to tell you about what we have been working on for the Mac. I have been a die-hard Apple fan since I bought my first Mac back in 1994. It has been a dream of mine to see my team’s best work come to life on the Mac. Now we are entering a new era for gaming on the Mac.”

Kojima continued, “So I’m very happy to announce that we’re bringing Death Stranding Director’s Cut to the Mac later this year! Death Stranding on the Mac takes full advantage of the latest Apple technologies to provide the best experience to our fans.”

Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that this partnership is not limited to just Death Stranding, with Kojima saying “This is just the beginning, and we are actively working to bring our future titles to Apple platforms.”

Apple’s M chips have proven to be rather impressive, and so it is exciting to see game developers starting to support the new hardware – helping to slowly destigmatise the idea of playing games on a Mac. Death Stranding will come to MacOS later this year.

Following years of rumours, Apple looks set to finally officially announce their AR/VR headset during the smartphone manufacturer’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference. Though said to be focused primarily on productivity, a number of game studios have teased that their titles might be announced for the headset at the upcoming event.

As collated by Reddit user ‘ak47rocks1337yt’ multiple game devs have Tweeted about the upcoming event, which is set to go live on the 5th of June. Ahead of the conference, Beat Saber’s co-founder Jaroslav Beck teased “June 5th is going to be [popcorn and sunglasses emoji]” all-but-confirming that the VR juggernaut will make its presence at the event.

Similarly – though perhaps even more cryptically – Sean Murray of Hello Games and No Man’s Sky simply Tweeted out an Apple emoji. We have seen the team partner up with Apple in the past (having announced No Man’s Sky for Mac during last year’s WWDC) and so it would not be surprising to see the game’s VR version announced for Apple’s headset.

With leaks and rumours circulating for years, it will be exciting to have Apple’s AR/VR headset finally announced and confirmed.

Over the last couple of years, Apple has been working with select game developers to bring games over to the Mac, optimised for the new M-series SoCs powered by Apple's new GPU technology. Previously, we've seen games like Resident Evil Village and No Man's Sky revealed running on M-series Macs at WWDC. This year, Apple may have plans to showcase another big game running on Mac at WWDC this year, as Hideo Kojima has recently spotted at Apple Campus.

Hideo Kojima is a legendary game developer, well known for his time at Konami working on the Metal Gear franchise. Nowadays, Kojima runs his own studio, Kojima Productions, working on titles like Death Stranding. Right now, the studio has a number of secret projects in the works, including one cloud-oriented project with Xbox.

According to Bloomberg's Apple reporter, Mark Gurman, Kojima was recently spotted at Apple Campus, indicating that he's working with the company in some form, or at the very least, in discussions with Apple about a project. This could result in something like a Mac port for Death Stranding, leveraging Apple's new M-series SoC and accompanying graphics APIs.

Alternatively, it could have something to do with Apple's VR plans. The company has been working on its first VR headset for years and rumour has it that Apple will announce its first headset at WWDC next month. Kojima could potentially be part of the plan, but it is worth noting that Kojima himself has previously expressed difficulties getting into VR and has publicly confirmed that he had cancelled a VR project in the past due to suffering from motion sickness.

KitGuru Says: My money here is on a Death Stranding port for Mac, or perhaps an ambitious mobile game. However, considering Kojima's documented struggles getting into VR, Apple may also be lining up to make a statement with its headset reveal with bold claims of eliminating motion sickness.

We've known through leaks that Apple has been working on its own VR/AR headset for quite some time now. Analysts have believed that we'll see Apple's first mixed-reality headset in 2023, but it is now being reported that Apple has some concerns about the current state of the VR market.

While at one point Apple CEO, Tim Cook, was extremely bullish on the future of mixed reality technology, the market has stagnated in recent years. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is no longer optimistic about the mixed reality market and is pushing back production of its first headset to Q3. It is also anticipated that Apple will only sell around 200,000 to 300,000 units, which is a dip below previous expectations.

Kuo believes Apple is concerned that a combination of economic downturn, compromised hardware specifications and a lack of polished ecosystem and high price tag will lead to low sales for its first headset.

Apple just recently confirmed its dates for WWDC and the invitation could tease fresnel lenses for a VR headset. Apple has put hints on event invitations before, although given this recent news, Apple may push back its unveiling to a later date.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Given that this headset has a rumoured price tag of $3000 or higher, we would expect sales to be quite low. Sony is already having a hard time having reportedly only sold 300,000 PSVR 2 headsets over the last six weeks and that is a much cheaper and consumer-marketed device. Apple might have a bit more market pull, but once you start reaching such high price points, you are really marketing to professionals and developers rather than consumers and hobbyists.

Apple launched its next-generation M2 processor earlier this week, alongside a new MacBook Air and a 13-inch MacBook Pro featuring the chip. Before the end of the year, we should see even more M2-powered devices from Apple, including bigger MacBook Pro models, and a new iPad Pro.

According to Bloomberg, new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros should ship in late 2022 featuring a new M2 Max chip, expanding the CPU from eight-cores to up to twelve-cores and increasing the number of GPU cores up to 38.

As for the standard M2 processor, we'll see that in the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air and soon, a new iPad Pro. According to supply chain consultant, Ross Young, a new 14-inch iPad Pro with a Mini-LED display is on the way. This new iPad Pro should replace the current-gen M1-powered iPad Pro.

Apple typically announces new Macs and iPads during October, during an event roughly one month after the annual September iPhone launch. With that in mind, much of this should be made official then.

Last night during Apple's WWDC keynote, the company officially launched its next generation Apple Silicon processor. The new M2 chip is heading to Macs this year, promising 18% faster CPU performance and 35% faster GPU performance.

The Apple M2 processor is built using the 5nm process and features 20 billion transistors, a 25% increase over the original M1. Overall, Apple says we should see an 18 percent increase in CPU performance, and up to 35 percent more performance from the GPU. This GPU increase has already been demonstrated well, with Resident Evil Village heading to Macs with M1 or M2 processors.

To help aid in these performance increases, Apple is using new performance and efficiency cores in the M2, as well as 24GB of unified memory with 100Gbps memory bandwidth. This is a 50% increase over the bandwidth of the M1 processor.

The eight-core Apple M2 processor will be making its debut in a new MacBook Air soon. The latest ultra-thin Mac now comes with MagSafe charging, a 13.6-inch display and an upgraded battery promising up to 18 hours of use. Pre-orders for the M2 MacBook Air are already live, with prices starting at £1249.

Apple recently held its Worldwide Developers Conference stream, where the iPhone manufacturer announced all manner of new software updates for its various devices, from the Macbook to the Apple Watch and more. One of the most interesting announcements was the fact that No Man’s Sky will soon be coming to the iPad as a native app.

Apple’s M series of chips have been praised for their speed, power and efficiency. Despite this power, few games take full advantage of these chips due to the iPad lacking many console-equivalent games. This may soon be changing, as Apple has announced that:

“The power of Apple silicon enables every new Mac to run AAA games with ease, including upcoming titles such as EA’s GRID Legends and Capcom’s Resident Evil Village. And since Apple silicon also powers iPad, game developers can bring their AAA games to even more users, like No Man’s Sky from Hello Games, which is coming to both Mac and iPad later this year.”

No Man’s Sky’s procedurally generated nature means that it will be rather interesting to see just how much the space exploration game will push the iPad’s hardware. No Man's Sky is available on all modern gaming devices from PlayStation to Xbox to PC and even the Switch.

There is little doubt that the game will perform better than at least the Nintendo Switch, and as such, hopefully No Man’s Sky becomes the first in a new wave of console games being ported to mobile.

Last night Apple’s annual WorldWide Developers Conference began – as always – with Tim Cook taking to the state to announce the latest version of Apple’s software. With very few leaks beforehand, the announcement of iOS 15 came with a number of surprises.

The first major feature coming with iOS 15 is an overhaul of Facetime and Messaging. Facetime now offers many new conveniences, including the Zoom-like ability to send invites through links, allowing non iOS users to use Facetime (when invited to do so), and the ability to watch films, tv shows, and consume other content all together and in real-time (dubbed SharePlay) – no doubt inspired by the past year of lockdowns. Other small refinements include a slightly new look, spatial audio and more.

iOS 15 also introduces new ways to stay productive and on top of your life. The New ‘Focus’ feature takes the Do Not Disturb mode and turns it up to 11, allowing users to create multiple different profiles, all of which will affect what notifications you receive, what apps you see and more. All of this can also be seamlessly transitioned between one another, making the process simple and quick.

Notifications have also been changed. Alongside small visual tweaks, notifications received can now be grouped together based on importance, how time sensitive they are and more. Other miscellaneous features include improved Weather, Maps, Notes, Safari and Translate apps; an improvement to Find My, bringing many of the AirTags features to the iPhone – and many more smaller improvements.

iOS 15 isn’t a major shift in functionality nor a massive redesign (as Android 12 is), but offers many small tweaks and refinements, all of which should make using your phone that much more simple and convenient, all while offering a greater level of control. The full list of changes can be found HERE.

Apple Music is getting a huge upgrade today, as Apple is now enabling lossless audio streams, in addition to spatial audio streams powered by Dolby Atmos. This update makes Apple Music one of the few streaming services to offer lossless audio, rivalling the likes of Tidal.

Today, Apple Music officially begins rolling out lossless quality options to its entire catalogue, which includes over 75 million songs. Apple is also adding support for Spatial Audio, so Dolby Atmos headphone users will get a bit more out of their listening experience.

While lossless audio will be coming to all songs on Apple Music, the rollout is starting off with 20 million songs supported. That number will grow to over 75 million lossless audio tracks by the end of this year. Spatial Audio will be available on a case-by-case basis, starting off with a few artists that have mastered albums in Dolby Atmos format. From there, Apple will be looking to consistently add new ‘Spatial Audio’ tracks and albums on a regular basis.

The update is rolling out now, enabling a lossless audio toggle in the iOS app. Do keep in mind that lossless audio will take up a lot more bandwidth and you'll need to dedicate more space on your iPhone or iPad for downloaded tracks.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I can see why lossless audio quality wasn’t a day-one feature, after all, high quality audio is a niche interest and streaming it takes up a lot of bandwidth. Still, it is nice to see Apple Music finally making the jump and bringing improvements for those who have invested in high-end audio gear.

We've been talking about the possibility of Apple switching to ARM chips for Macs for a couple of years now. Over time, reports of Apple making the jump have picked up a lot of steam and later this month, Apple will apparently be making it all official.

According to sources speaking with Bloomberg, Apple will unveil its first ARM-powered Mac later this month during an all-digital version of WWDC. Normally, Apple's World Wide Developer Conference takes place on the Apple Campus in the beginning of June. However, due to COVID-19, this year the event will take place digitally.

This online-only version of WWDC is expected to take place starting on the 22nd of June and will reveal details on a few ARM-based processors Apple is planning. Three of these chips are being designed for use in Mac computers and are based on the upcoming A14 chip, which will power the next iPhone starting in September.

Apparently, Apple's shift to ARM is based on Intel's slow performance gains, whereas internal tests of Macs running on ARM-based hardware have been improving greatly. This will be the first major processor shift that Apple has taken since moving from PowerPC to Intel back in the mid-2000s.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This move has been in the making for quite some time now. We first began discussing it in May 2018 and it looks like by the end of this month, it will all be official. What do you all think of Apple's decision to move over to ARM-processors instead of Intel?

Apple has always been known to offer its devices support for many years – perhaps even beyond what would normally be expected. Even so, it would appear as though the tech giant might outdo itself, as according to a report, all devices which currently run on iOS 13 will also see support for Apple’s upcoming iOS 14.

The news comes via The Verifier (and translated by 9to5Mac), which previously had accurately suggested that the iPhone 5s and 6 would not receive any support past iOS 12.

If true, this would mean that the iPhone 6s and 6s plus will have received 5 years of major iOS updates by its end-of-life. Released in 2015, the iPhone 6s and its plus variant launched with iOS 8 and has since seen consistent software updates putting it on par with newer Apple devices.

Not much is currently known about iOS 14, aside from the fact that users might be able to convert handwritten words into typed text, as well as the much-requested addition of homescreen widgets

There will likely be much more to the update than these two features, and luckily fans won’t have to wait too long to find out, as Apple has announced that WWDC 2020 will take place on the 22nd of June and will include “early access to the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.”

WWDC is Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference which is held every year in June. It is one of the company’s biggest events each year (perhaps second only to their September Keynote), and is used to announce new hardware alongside the new versions of iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS – among other surprises. Normally held at the San Jose Convention Center, this year’s WWDC20 will instead be hosted online, bringing a “completely new online experience to millions.”

On Apple’s website, the company announced that “This June, WWDC20 brings a completely new online experience to millions of talented and creative developers around the world. Join us for a fully packed program — including Keynote and sessions — to gain early access to the future of Apple platforms and engage with Apple engineers. Dive into an exciting learning experience and discover how to create your most innovative apps yet using the latest Apple technologies.”

Though not explicitly stated, it is very likely that the shift in medium for WWDC is due to the coronavirus pandemic. With crowds recommended to be kept to a minimum, and many other events turning to the internet, it would appear as though Apple is following suit in taking these precautions.

From a consumer perspective, this shouldn't affect too much, as the press conference at WWDC has been streamed online for a number of years. One of the announcements at WWDC20 will undoubtedly be iOS 14, which has already leaked revealing new features such as system wide cursor support as well as an OCR-like feature.

No concrete date has been provided for WWDC20, but based on the company’s history, expect it to take place during the first half of June.

Apple’s annual WWDC presentation took place last night and brought along a ton of news. We know that iOS is finally getting dark mode, the iPad is getting its own OS to further differentiate it from the iPhone, the new Mac Pro is finally on the way and Apple has returned to making its own high-end monitors. Amidst all of that though, there was the small announcement that iTunes in its current form is coming to an end. The era of iTunes housing music, TV, movies, podcasts etc is over and will now be split up into separate applications.

We don’t know how this will work on Windows but on macOS going forward, there will be a different app for podcasts, music, TV/movies and then another app for syncing an Apple device to your system. The thinking is that iTunes has become too bloated and doesn’t make as much sense nowadays compared to past years, especially since iOS has separate apps for each of iTunes’ main functions.

At this point in time, we don’t know if Apple will take the same approach for iTunes on Windows, but we should find out soon enough. These changes will be rolling out as part of macOS Catalina later this year.

At any rate, this will be the end of an era. iTunes launched back in 2001 and helped usher in the age of legal digital downloads for music. Over the years, the store’s relevance has dwindled in large part thanks to the shift towards subscription services, which Apple is also getting heavily involved in this year. The company tested the waters with Apple Music a couple of years ago and this year, we’ll be getting a games subscription service and a TV subscription service.

KitGuru Says: I used to use iTunes quite heavily back in the iPod days but as soon as Spotify turned up and smartphones became prominent, I abandoned it just like many others. It’ll be a shame to see it go but splitting it up into each of its individual functions seems like the right move to me. Do many of you still use iTunes today?

Apple announces new Mac Pro and XDR Display at WWDC https://www.kitguru.net/lifestyle/mobile/apple/matthew-wilson/apple-announces-new-mac-pro-and-xdr-display-at-wwdc/ https://www.kitguru.net/lifestyle/mobile/apple/matthew-wilson/apple-announces-new-mac-pro-and-xdr-display-at-wwdc/#respond Tue, 04 Jun 2019 08:30:54 +0000 https://www.kitguru.net/?p=414844 Out with the bin and in with the cheese grater

The post Apple announces new Mac Pro and XDR Display at WWDC first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Back in 2013, Apple gave the Mac Pro a radical redesign, removing modular upgrade paths that PC users are traditionally used to in favour of a smaller, sleeker design. Eventually, Apple admitted that it screwed up with this approach and would return to a more upgrade friendly design in the future. Now, that day has arrived, with the new Mac Pro launching this year, alongside Apple’s new monitor.

We’ll start off with the new Mac Pro, which despite its more traditional tower design, still comes with its own design quirk. The previous Mac Pro ended up looking a bit like a bin, the new one is jokingly being referred to as a cheese grater due to the holes found all over the front panel. While it does look odd, these do serve a practical purpose by paving the way for additional airflow.

The new Mac Pro starts at $5,999 and comes with an Intel 8-core Xeon chip and AMD Radeon PRO 580x graphics. If you have a ton of cash, this can be configured all the way up to a 28-core Xeon, two Radeon Pro Vega II GPUs and 1.5TB of memory. Pricing for the top spec has yet to be confirmed but I would guess that it will be well above $20,000. Of course, since this version of the Mac Pro is user upgradeable, you could always pick up the parts you want at a cheaper rate and stick them in.

Pricing aside, I do have some concerns about the Mac Pro’s cooling. This has been an issue for a long time on Apple’s MacBook Pro range, especially when using higher end CPUs. With the Mac Pro desktop, Apple is using a fanless heatsink design for the CPU and GPU, with front fans bringing cool air in and a blower style fan in the bottom corner to direct airflow around the system. That doesn’t seem like the best fit if you want to keep a 28-core Xeon and dual Radeon Vega GPUs running at peak speeds and sensible temperatures but we'll have to wait and see what user reviews have to say later in the year.

Apple is also getting back to releasing its own displays. The Apple Cinema Display has been off the market for a while now and will now be replaced by the XDR Pro monitor. As the name suggests, this isn’t aimed at regular consumers but is instead aimed as a cheaper alternative to studios that rely on professional reference monitors that can cost up to and over $40,000.

Apple’s Pro XDR will sit at the $5000 mark for the standard glass version, with a ‘nano glass texture’ version going for $6000. That money will net you a 6K resolution display with HDR. Apple has managed to provide cooling to the point where the display can maintain 1,000 nits of brightness indefinitely, while hitting 1,600 nits of brightness at peak, which is very impressive and should be of interest to film editors mastering shots for HDR output.

Considering that the XDR display is competing with reference monitors used by movie studios and film editors, the pricing isn’t terrible. If you are spending $100 million to make a movie, spending an extra few thousand for better tools to get the job done doesn’t seem like much of a stretch. However, in true Apple fashion, you will need to pay an extra hefty sum for all the accessories. The VESA mount will set you back an extra $199, while the ‘Pro Stand’ for the monitor costs an extra $999.

KitGuru Says: Apple went big on its desktop Pro line this year. It is all incredibly expensive gear but professionals that are used to Final Cut and other Apple tools will likely jump on board regardless. What do you guys think of Apple’s new Mac Pro and monitor?

In April 2017, Apple finally admitted that it ‘designed itself into a corner' with the 2013 Mac Pro. The cylindrical design was a feat of engineering but it came at the cost of modularity and the ability to upgrade, things that Mac Pro customers tend to care about. A new Mac Pro redesign was supposed to arrive in 2018 but was pushed back to 2019 and replaced by the iMac Pro as a stop gap solution. Now, a few weeks ahead of WWDC, reports suggest that the new Mac Pro may finally see the light of day.

According to sources speaking with Bloomberg, Apple will be revealing its new Mac Pro at the World Wide Developers Conference in June. This is traditionally a software focused event for iOS and macOS, although hardware has been shown in the past. Given that the Mac Pro will target demanding pro-users, like developers, it makes sense for the new Mac Pro to finally be revealed here.

Aside from a new Mac Pro, there are rumours that Apple may release its own display once again. The Apple Cinema Display has been retired for years now and the company has since leaned on third parties like LG to provide 4K and 5K monitors for Pro users. That could be changing, with rumours of a new monitor from Apple that would support HDR and a high resolution in a 31-inch size. It won't be OLED though, instead it is suggested that Mini-LED will be used.

Hardware will play a small role though, WWDC is mainly a software driven event, so we are likely to get our first look at the future of iOS and the next version of macOS too. WWDC starts on the 3rd of June this year, so we will know more then.

KitGuru Says: The bin-like Mac Pro is now almost six years old, so we are long overdue an update. The rumours around a new monitor seem a little more suspect but given how nice the old Apple Cinema Display was, it would be cool to see a modern version.

As we reported earlier this year, iOS 11 will in-fact drop support for 32-bit apps. The move was confirmed during Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this week, while also confirming the fact that the latest version of iOS would not be coming to the iPhone 5 or 5C.

Apple's iOS 11 update will officially begin rolling out in September, alongside the launch of the next batch of iPhones. Those using an iPad 4, iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C will not receive the update, meaning you will need an iPhone 5S or 5th generation iPad or newer to take advantage of new features.

The reason for this is clear, support for 32-bit is being dropped and 64-bit SoCs were introduced with the iPhone 5S. While Apple did begin warning developers to update their apps to 64-bit before iOS 11 began rolling out, back in April we learned that there were still around 200,000 32-bit apps on the iOS App Store. Apple has not announced plans to outright remove these apps from the store, so they should still be usable on older devices.

Earlier this week, iOS 11 became available to developers, so perhaps we'll see some of those apps make the jump to 64-bit sooner rather than later. Other improvements with this version include better translation and contextual awareness for Siri, a redesigned ‘control centre' and Apple Pay support within iMessage so you can easily send money to people.

KitGuru Says: Dropping 32-bit makes sense when you consider that the majority of iOS users are now rocking a 64-bit capable device. Unfortunately, this does also mean that the iPhone 5 and 5C have already reached their end of life, which isn't great when you consider that the iPhone C line hasn't received an update since it launched.

It has been around two years since Apple first launched ‘Apple Music', its own streaming service set to take on Spotify. Since then, the service has expanded into offering original video content in addition to music and it appears to be paying off nicely, with 27 million people now subscribed.

This marks a good level of growth for Apple Music, which hit 13 million subscribers around a year ago and just managed to surpass the 20 million mark in December 2016. However, the service hasn't eclipsed Spotify just yet, as according to Recode, Spotify still maintains 50 million subscribers.

Apple will be making more of a push for Apple Music this year, with several new updates set to roll out. At WWDC earlier this week, Apple began talking about new features including shared playlists and the ability to link friends to specific songs. Spotify already does this but it should help Apple catch up on the discoverability/social side.

KitGuru Says: I tried out Apple Music when it first launched but I just couldn't get along with the app and UI. In the end, I stuck with Spotify as there was no easy way to carry over my playlists. Still, I would be interested in going back and seeing if anything has improved since launch. Have any of you tried Apple Music since it launched? Did you end up switching to it full-time, or did you go back to another service?

Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference is officially under way and so far, there has been plenty of talk surrounding the Mac. We already knew that Apple was planning a Mac Pro redesign for 2018, which would be preceded by an iMac refresh this year. Now, the new series of iMacs is official, with improved displays, better CPUs and much better graphics performance.

For starters, the new iMac displays are 500 nits brighter than the previous generation and can support up to 1 billion colours. Under the hood, Apple has made the jump to Intel's 7th generation Kaby Lake processors and upped the memory capacity to 32GB of RAM for the 21.5-inch iMac and 64GB of RAM for the 27-inch version.

The most important change to the iMac comes in the GPU department though. Going forward, all 4K 21.5-inch iMacs come with a discrete graphics chip, representing a huge 80 percent boost in graphics performance. The 27-inch 5K iMac will continue to come with discrete graphics, supplied by AMD.

There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports included now to help users expand their system with different external devices. Interestingly enough, Apple also took the time to discuss virtual reality, pitching its new iMacs as great content creation tools for those looking to generate VR experiences and applications.

The final thing worth noting is that macOS is also getting an update this year known as ‘High Sierra', which will make various improvements to Safari and overall OS performance.

KitGuru Says: There are still some more details to come but that is the general gist of Apple's iMac presentation today. We will keep an eye on WWDC for any other major announcements. What do you guys think of the new iMacs? For me, it's just nice to finally see Apple paying attention to the GPU. More often than not, graphics are overlooked in many of Apple's machines.

Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) is just around the corner, which means there are announcements ahead. According to the most recent reports, WWDC will be kicking off with hardware upgrades to the 12-inch MacBook and the MacBook Pro lineup. However, the iPad Mini might be on the chopping block, meaning we may never see an updated version to Apple's mini tablet.

Let's start off by talking about the new MacBooks. According to sources speaking with Bloomberg, Apple will be kitting out the MacBook and MacBook Pro with updated Kaby Lake processors. On top of that, the MacBook Air may also get an update though the report doesn't have too many details on that front, straying away from things like an updated ‘Retina' display.

Out of the three, a MacBook Air update would be the most surprising, given that Apple has seemingly forgotten about its original ‘thin and light' in recent years. It is currently the only Apple laptop to not feature a retina display, which goes to show how long it has been.

Now let's move on to the iPad Mini. While the iPad lineup still sells fairly well, right now, the Mini is being burned at both ends. The original iPad Mini launched at a time when Apple was still straying away from larger phone displays. However, now with the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus models on the market, the iPad Mini makes less sense.

According to sources speaking with BGR, Apple's new 9.7-inch iPad simply offers better value, it has a larger display, has better hardware and is even cheaper than the iPad Mini 4. This, combined with the fact that the iPhone 6/7 Plus are taking sales away, is apparently leading Apple to discontinue the iPad Mini going forward.

KitGuru Says: The original iPad Mini and iPad Mini 2 were both seen as good value at the time. However, things have changed significantly since then, especially with the Plus-sized iPhone now being so popular. Do you guys prefer smaller sized tablets? Do you think there is still a market for them, even with larger smartphones becoming the norm?

When Apple first announced the Apple Watch, the device could not run many of its own native apps. Instead, apps had to connect back to an iPhone through Bluetooth in order to borrow processing power. However, eventually Apple got WatchOS to a point where developers could run apps natively, without needing to be tethered to an iPhone and soon, native apps will be mandatory.

This week, Apple has let its WatchOS developers know that it wants all apps submitted to the platform to run natively on the Apple Watch from the 1st of June onwards.

apple_watch-600x48111

Developers have been able to publish native apps since WWDC back in June 2015, when the Watch SDK 2.0 launched. However, from this June onwards, all app submissions must be running natively on the Apple Watch, meaning developers will need to dig in and squeeze what they can from the hardware without relying on a tethered iPhone.

This cut-off sate is just a couple of weeks away from Apple's next WWDC event, at which Apple will announce its new software slate for the year, which could include an updated version of WatchOS, along with a new version of Mac OS X and iOS.

KitGuru Says: This is all in preparation for the new WatchOS and likely, the Apple Watch 2, which should début later this year with some enhanced hardware and features.

It looks like the Macbook Pro line could be getting an early refresh this year. While Apple has traditionally announced new laptops and OS X machines in October, this year it looks like we will be getting a new 13-inch and 15-inch Macbook Pro in July, perhaps with a debut set for the World Wide Developer Conference, at which Apple will also likely announce the new version of OS X.

This particular rumour comes from Digitimes, which cites supply chain sources. These new Macbook Pros will end up sporting Intel's Skylake processors, which are more power efficient and could pave the way for even thinner laptops in Apple's Pro range.

apple-12q2-macbook-pro-ret-zebra-lg-e1406631073486

There is even talk of these new Macbook Pros being thinner than the Macbook Air, which could potentially mean that Apple will phase out the Air-line. Either way, Apple usually isn't great at keeping secrets so we will likely hear more as we get closer to WWDC.

KitGuru Says: I happen to regularly use a Macbook Pro myself though I do wish that Apple would get into the habit of offering a discrete GPU on some of its lower end models. Do any of you use a Macbook Pro at all? Are you in the market for an upgrade?

We are quite a few months away from Apple's next big event, known as the Worldwide Developer Conference, which takes place in June. However, we are already hearing some rumours surrounding Apple's plans, which may include a new line of Macbook Air laptops. The Air has been a big part of Apple's Macbook line up since 2008, with a design focus on being as thin as possible.

Apparently the new Macbook Air will be slimmer than before and feature larger displays. Right now, the Air comes in two variants, the 11-inch and the 13-inch, so we may see Apple bump its screen size up to 15 inches this time around.

macbook-air_600x450

This is all coming from Taiwanese outlet, Economic Daily News, so we don't know how reliable it is. That said, this wouldn't be the first time that a future Apple product has come to light months ahead of a scheduled announcement.

Apple may ditch the 11-inch Macbook Air entirely, since there is now a 12-inch Macbook, which was introduced a couple of months ago. The new Macbook Air will need to undergo some major changes internally in order to slim down the chassis, so this will be an all-new laptop, rather than a simple hardware refresh.

KitGuru Says: Apple cannibalized its the Macbook Air a little bit when it launched the new Macbook, featuring a slimmer design and saving space by going with a passive cooling system, thanks to the Intel Core M processor used. With that in mind, it would make sense for Apple to introduce a newly designed Macbook Air next year.

There is a new Apple rumour almost every other day, today we got wind of some news about the upcoming Apple TV. We have been hearing about Apple's latest set top box for some time now, which is currently expected to launch later this year alongside the company's new TV streaming service.

Now, it looks like we can expect the Apple TV in September, complete with Siri functionality and an App Store. While Apple usually reserves its September event to focus on its latest iPhones, this year it may also bring along its new Apple TV revision.

apple-tv-600x353

The new remote will come with a slight re-design, a touch pad and presumably a microphone in order to activate Siri. The App Store will also be a big addition as the Apple TV has just used iTunes for years. The Apple TV hasn't actually received a major update since 2012, which is likely due to Apple's internal focus on building an actual TV, which was later cancelled.

According to BuzzFeed, Apple was initially planning to reveal its new Apple TV along with its TV streaming service back in June at WWDC, though its plans got pushed back a bit. Now it seems that Apple is moving ahead with plans for its new set top box, though plans for its streaming service may have to take a back seat once again due to prolonged negotiations with networks.

Apple's annual World Wide Developer Conference kicked off today, at which the company announced this year's Mac OS X update. Following on from last year's Yosemite update will be OS X El Capitan, which is focussing on improving the OS X experience while also bringing a boost to overall performance.

Craig Federighi went over the changes live on the WWDC stage, including an overhaul to Safari, Apple's web browser. Sites can now be pinned in the tab bar, it will also now be easier to see which tab is playing audio, much like the way it is handled in Chrome.

Spotlight search is getting some improvements, a new Notes app is on the way and the Mission Control window will now include a split view, which lets you split the screen in half for separate apps.

Back when OS X Mavericks was introduced, Apple had announced that it found a way to get more performance out of RAM. At the time is cited that 4GB of memory would essentially perform like 6GB. Now with OS X El Capitan, Apple claims that apps will begin to open 1.4 times faster, with app switching being much faster and PDF file performance getting a bump.

OS X El Capitan will be immediately available for developers from today while the rest of us will have to wait for the official release later this year. It will once again be a free upgrade, something Apple introduced back with Mavericks.

KitGuru Says: While not everyone enjoys the Mac experience, it is hard to deny that Apple always delivers when it comes to software support. Are any of you currently using a Mac? Which version of OS X are you running?

We have been expecting an Apple Music streaming service announcement for some time now and even though negotiations with certain record labels slowed things down a bit, all signs still pointed towards a reveal at Apple's annual World Wide Developer Conference this month. Now, it seems that Sony's CEO has jumped the gun, having revealed that the announcement is heading to us this week.

Sony has been the source of many leaks in recent months thanks to the massive hack that the company suffered but it looks like the company just can't stop itself. In an interview at the Midem Music Industry Festival,  Sony's CEO confirmed that one of Apple's WWDC reveals would be its music streaming service, according to VentureBeat.

Apparently Apple's entry to the music streaming market will be an “amazing moment” for the music industry due to the purely subscription based business model, rather than relying on advertisement revenue like Spotify. “Spotify has never really advertised because it’s never been profitable. My guess is that Apple will promote this like crazy and I think that will have a halo effect on the streaming business.”

WWDC kicks off later today at 6PM UK time, so we only really have to wait a few hours to know if this information is accurate. We will likely also see the next versions of OS X and iOS at the conference. Rumored announcements include a new Apple TV and maybe even the 12-inch iPad Pro that we have been hearing about for years.

KitGuru Says: It could be argued that Apple's mainstream success has largely derived from its efforts in the music industry, first with the iPod, then with iTunes and now it is tackling streaming. That said, Spotify is already an established service with millions of users so it may not be an easy market for Apple to crack.

It looks like Apple has struggled to get its upcoming Internet TV streaming service ready in time for its annual World Wide Developer Conference next week, on the 8th of June. Announcements expected to take place at the show include a new music streaming service, based on Beats Music, alongside a new Apple TV set top box, iOS 9 and possibly even the iPad Pro.

This isn't the first time we've heard that something of Apple's might not be ready for WWDC. There were concerns that record labels would hold up the reveal of Apple's music service a few weeks ago, although things seem to have come along since then.

The TV streaming service on the other hand, doesn't seem to be going according to plan. According to a report from Re/Code, Apple did have plans to debut the service at WWDC but has had to postpone has negotiations have not yet ended with critical networks and content providers.

Early indications of this came last week, when CBS CEO, Les Moonves spoke at the Code Conference, stating that he would probably sign a deal with Apple but had not yet settled on financial terms. Apparently, Apple is also still working on the technology required to provide local programming via the web as well.

So far, Apple has said nothing official about its upcoming TV streaming service and it looks like the company may end up waiting longer. Pricing is also going to play a big factor, right now Sling TV is one of the more competitive services around so it is likely that Apple will try to match on price in order to compete.

Aside from that, if you were expecting Apple to release a full blown TV set at some point, then you will be disappointed as the company reportedly shelved its Smart TV plans some time last year.

KitGuru Says: With Netflix and other on-demand services becoming so popular in recent years, networks are going to need to adapt in order to compete. Internet TV will likely end up being a very big deal and will likely encourage more people to ‘cut the cord', particularly with a company as large as Apple on board.

Right now, the Apple Watch is fairly useless without an iPhone to pair it to, this is because none of the apps are actually running natively but rather borrowing power from your phone and sending that information back to the watch via Bluetooth.

However, this will change soon as Apple is set to launch a new software development kit next month at its annual WWDC event. This new SDK will allow app developers to create software that can run natively on the Apple Watch hardware itself, rather than having to tap in to your phone every time you want to do something.

The new and improved SDK will allow apps to access the wearable's different sensors, like the heart rate monitor, the gyroscope and the Force Touch sensor. The new SDK was revealed to be coming at the Re/code annual conference, at which high-ranking Apple employee, Jeff Williams, spoke: “A week from Monday at our developer conference we’ll release a preview so that developers will be able to write code natively and have access to sensors, and we're really excited about that”.

We still don't know if these apps will be able to run without being tethered to an iPhone but with WWDC being so close, it won't take long to find out for sure. Alongside this new SDK, we will likely see iOS 9 announced at the conference, which will provide even more tools to iOS developers.

KitGuru Says: Many Apple Watch users have noted that the device can sometimes feel sluggish, which they might not realize is down to the fact that the apps are actually running on the tethered iPhone and streaming back to the watch, rather than running natively. This new SDK could help alleviate that problem. That said, the Apple Watch likely won't be stretching its legs too much until the second generation arrives, at that point, Apple will likely have everything smoothed out properly- a lot like the iPad.

Once upon a time, Steve Jobs claimed to have finally cracked the code to TV and since then, speculation surrounding Apple's own TV set with Apple TV integrated in has been rife. However, it looks like the company may have called it quits on the project some time last year.

According to new reports, Apple quietly canned the Apple TV set project over a year ago. This information comes from sources speaking with The Wall Street Journal earlier this week. According to them, Apple had a small team working on a TV set for a few years but the team has since been disbanded with plans cancelled entirely or put on hold.

Apple was apparently struggling to come up with compelling features to help make its offering stand out from the crowd. The TV would have sported a 4K resolution but when it came down to it, Apple didn't feel that is was distinctive enough to win a spot in the market.

Despite the fact that we may not see an Apple TV set, the company has been working on making its Apple TV set top box more compelling, with its own on-demand TV service in the works. It also has exclusivity on HBO GO for a little while, which will win over some in the US, where the service is actually available.

Either way, WWDC is just around the corner, at which Apple is expected to announce its TV service, its new music streaming service and iOS 9.

KitGuru Says: It sounded like Steve Jobs had some interesting ideas for the TV before his death. It is a shame that we will never get to see what he had envisioned back then. That said, the TV market is very competitive, especially when ‘Smart TV' functionality is concerned.

Apple is apparently going to bring split screen multitasking to iOS 9, allowing iPhone 6, 6 Plus and iPad users to make better use of their screen real estate by opening up multiple apps at once. If such a feature exists, then we will likely see it for the first time at WWDC in June, when Apple will give developers access to the upcoming version of its software.

According to 9to5Mac, the split screen feature will allow users to place a second app on-screen, taking up either a third or half of the screen. This would work particularly well on the rumored 12-inch iPad Pro, which we have been hearing about for quite some time now.

In addition to this, Apple may be planning to make it easier for families to share a tablet by adding in multiple user accounts, a feature that Android users have been making use of for a while now. Such a feature could also help out businesses or schools as well.

The latest versions of iOS tend to be announced at each year at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference, it is unlikely that tradition will break this year so expect to hear more iOS 9 news early next month.

KitGuru Says: Split screen multitasking would be a particularly useful feature for quite a few people. Do any of you own a tablet? Would you like to have more than one app open on the screen at once?

Apple's re-branded Beats Music streaming service is still expected to be revealed next month at the World Wide Developers Conference, despite difficulty during negotiations. As the reveal gets closer, we have been learning even more information, pointing towards new features Apple may have cooked up.

According to 9to5Mac, which has a very good track record with insider information on Apple, the re-branded version of Beats Music will come baked in to an all new Music app for iOS. There may even be Android and Mac versions of the app as well in order to reach as many customers as possible.

beats-apple-e1427995205387

The re-branded version of Beats Music may have another trick up its sleeve with a social network built-in to allow artists to share their own media and make posts. However, anyone with an iTunes account will be able to ‘like' or comment on a post as long as the artist allows for that level of interaction.

A free trial is said to be on the cards, although the service will be subscription based in an attempt to steal market share from Spotify Premium members. Additionally, Apple has reportedly been in talks to try and get labels to drop support for Spotify's free ad-supported streaming tier. However, this has drawn the attention of the European Commission which is probing anti-trust allegations.

KitGuru Says: Considering how Apple helped bring the music industry in to the 21st century with the iPod and the launch of iTunes, it is in a pretty good position to make deals for its own streaming service and potentially squeeze out any competitors. Either way, we will find out exactly what Apple has up its sleeve in a few weeks time at WWDC.
