Phasmophobia hit it big back in 2020 when the game was released in Early Access, launching to near immediate success. In the years since, the team at Kinetic Games have continued to work diligently on the game, improving it across the board. Following multiple delays for the console release, the team have now offered an update on the port’s current status.

Initially intended to launch last August, the team at Kinetic Games were forced to delay the console release of Phasmophobia to October due to an office fire. This was later pushed even further back to 2024, citing “unforeseen challenges in adapting the game for consoles.”

While we still do not yet know exactly when Phasmophobia will come to consoles, the team took to their Steam page to offer an update, saying: “As many of you know, Console was delayed from last year's predicted release date due to several reasons. We're still hard at work trying to get this ready for you eager console players, and it'll arrive as soon as it's ready.”

They continued, “On the other hand, with the delay comes extra changes for console players on day one; the new and improved upcoming Shop experience, the upcoming adjustments to the leveling and equipment tiers, as well as minor balance changes. This will all result in Console players getting the best experience as soon as they receive the game, instead of large portions of gameplay and progression changing just after it releases.”

Finally the team concluded with a slight silver lining, claiming that “when it is released, console players will receive a game that looks and runs better. We plan to implement a large amount of optimizations across the board, which will allow us to keep the game's graphical quality as close to PC as possible.”

Alongside this update on the status of the console port, Kinetic Games released a full roadmap for 2024 which can be found HERE.

Journey to the Savage Planet is a fun and unique first person shooter which sees you explore a number of wonderful and weird worlds while offering fun gameplay to boot. Almost exactly three years after its debut on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the game is getting a free PS5 and Series X|S upgrade – while also throwing in its DLC as well.

Making the announcement on their blog, publisher 505 Games said “Greetings, Pioneers!

We are very excited to announce the Journey to the Savage Planet Employee of the Month Edition is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox X/S on February 14th! Employee of the Month includes the original game and Hot Garbage DLC with optimized 4K Graphics for high-end consoles, 60fps on PS5 and Xbox X (30 fps on Xbox S), new in-game ads, new Martin Tweed videos and new photo mode filters and frames.”

As part of an FAQ released alongside the announcement, 505 Games confirmed that even if you did not own the DLC on PS4/Xbox One, Journey to the Savage Planet: Employee of the Month Edition will include the Hot Garbage DLC for free for PS5 and Xbox Series owners.

With it being an entirely separate SKU from the last-gen release, the Employee of the Month Edition is able to take full advantage of the current-gen consoles and so hopefully we see even more subtle upgrades when the free update goes live on the 14th of February.

The Dead Space remake is just a few show weeks away, with the game set to arrive on the 27th of January. Ahead of its release, the team have now confirmed that console players will be able to play the game at either 30 or 60 frames-per-second – with the expected compromises in switching between the two.

Informing prospective players via Twitter, the official Dead Space team released the performance statistics of the game on consoles, saying “Looking for #DeadSpace specs? We’ve got you covered. Console players have the option to choose between 2 graphics modes:

  • Quality: 30fps at 4K (UHD) resolution with ray-tracing.
  • Performance: 60fps with 2K (QHD) with no ray-tracing.”

Since the start of the 9th generation, we have seen most games offer multiple performance options for their games, with players being able to pick between 30fps, 60fps and beyond. Confirmation that the Dead Space remake will offer such options is welcome, especially in the wake of some games (such as Gotham Knights) omitting the functionality.

It will be interesting to see the differences between the two modes, especially as the exact form of ray-tracing used has not been detailed, meaning it could be something as relatively minor as ray-traced ambient occlusion, or it could be as impactful as RT Global Illumination. Furthermore, Series S specs were not released, and so we will have to wait and see.

The Xbox Elite Series of controllers offer a premium option for all those who want to maximise their gaming potential. This comes at a heavy premium however, costing significantly more than a Standard Xbox controller (£159.99 to be exact). For those who want a slightly more premium experience while not needing every single bell and whistle, the console manufacturer has now announced its slightly cheaper Xbox Elite Series 2 Core wireless controller.

Costing £114.99, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 Core is said to be “designed to meet the core needs of today’s competitive gamers, putting exceptional performance, customization, and durability where it matters most — in your hands.”

The Series 2 Core controller shares many of the same customisability at its more expensive sibling, including “adjustable-tension thumbsticks, wrap-around rubberized grip, and shorter hair trigger locks” as well as exclusive button mapping options in the Xbox Accessories app.

In essence, the Core edition of the controller is the exact same as the Elite without any of the extra accessories included, meaning you will not get the back paddles; charging dock; additional thumbsticks; additional D-pad nor the carrying case.

That being said, if you later decide you want to upgrade to the full feature set, the core is designed to support these extra accessories and can now be purchased separately as part of the Complete Component Pack for £54.99.

Previous generations of the Xbox Elite controller have suffered from quality control issues and as such, Microsoft is offering a 1-year limited warranty. Hopefully you will not need to use it however, as the manufacturer has claimed that they “have continued to improve Elite Series 2 controllers to be more reliable than ever before with refined components that are built to last.”

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Core can be preordered right now, with the accessory shipping from the 21st of September.

The Need For Speed franchise may not be at the peak of its popularity, but the racing game series still functions as one of the most important in the genre. After the less-than-stellar reception to 2019’s Need For Speed Heat, the next game in the NFS franchise will reportedly be exclusive to next-gen systems.

In a recent episode of the Grubbsnax show, industry insider Jeff Grubb claimed that (as transcribed by VGC) “Need For Speed is still coming this year… that’s true, that game should be coming in November. If you are a Need For Speed fan who has bought a next-gen console, here’s some news; it’s next-gen only. They are shifting to next-gen only.”

This runs counter to the original announcement by EA which revealed that the much-loved Criterion Games would be developing the upcoming title, as well as the fact that it would be coming to the PS4/Xbox One generation of systems as well as next-gen.

The removal of the previous-gen versions will undoubtedly disappoint fans of the franchise who have not been able to get their hands on the elusive next-gen systems. That being said, for those who do have a next-gen console, this reveal is undoubtedly an exciting one.

With the Forza Horizon series breaking records and seeing universal acclaim, the Need For Speed franchise certainly has a lot of catching up to do. Hopefully the move to next-gen only helps to facilitate that.

During the recent 20th anniversary celebration of the Xbox brand, Microsoft announced that a number of games would be added to its backwards compatibility list, as well as its FPS Boost list. At the time, it was confirmed that no more games would be added to the backwards compatibility program. While the FPS Boost program is continuing, it is taking a small hiatus.

As reported by PureXbox, the director of Program Management at Xbox – Jason Ronald – made an appearance on the Iron Lords Podcast. Speaking on FPS Boost, Ronald revealed that no more games will be added for the foreseeable future due to technical issues.

According to Ronald “We're always looking at new ways that we can enhance titles, whether it's resolution increases, frame rate improvements, things like Auto HDR. I'll say right now, with the existing technique that we have with FPS Boost, we've tried plenty more than [the 130 FPS Boosted titles] and in some cases the vast majority of the game works great, but then we find a game-breaking bug 80% of the way through.”

He continued, “We're going to continue to look for new opportunities and new ways that we can enhance titles, but we don't have anything in the immediate future… Right now, I think we're kind of finding where some of the limitations of our current technique is.”

FPS Boost is a majorly impressive program and the fact that it has worked on so many titles already is impressive in its own right. Games that never saw a PC release have now been boosted with improved frame rates and higher resolutions, modernising many deserving games. While it is unfortunate to see the technology hit a roadblock, hopefully Microsoft can figure out a way to bring more titles up to modern standards. If, however, this is the end of the FPS Boost program, then Microsoft should be commended for their work.

Hunt: Showdown is a “thrilling, high-stakes PvPvE first-person shooter” from the team at Crytek. Running on their bespoke CryEngine, the game is graphically impressive – but also demanding. Those with an Xbox Series console or a PS5 can soon enjoy the game at 60fps however, thanks to an upcoming update.

Making the announcement on Reddit, the Hunt: Showdown team revealed that “with Update 1.7 we will remove the cap of 30 FPS for the Xbox Series S/X and PS5. This will allow those of you on the newest generation of consoles to play Hunt at up to 60FPS.”

Update 1.7 – which is live now on PC – brings with much more than just next-gen support. The update includes new quality of life improvements; a new weapon; multiple new traits; loadout presets; map alterations; and hundreds of more fixes and improvements.

As mentioned however, for next-gen systems, the biggest and most noticeable change will be the ability to play the game at 60fps. As it stands, it seems as though this is the primary improvement being added to these systems, with no news regarding resolution changes, texture improvements, or specific next-gen feature support.

Even so, doubling the frame rate will undoubtedly make for a much smoother and enjoyable experience – especially as the game is a competitive shooter. The full patch notes can be found HERE.

One of the best practices seen currently with this latest generation of consoles is the fact that half-decade old titles have been getting support, bringing their technology up to par with current generation standards. Such is the case with 2015’s Dying Light, which has now been confirmed to be getting a next-gen patch soon.

Ahead of the release of Dying Light 2, which is set to launch on the 4th of February 2022, Techland has continued to support the first game – most recently through a free update to the Hellraid mode adding “A new place to explore, new quests and much more.”

Despite the continuous updates, Dying Light never received an enhancement patch – not even for the PS4 Pro / Xbox One X. In response to the latest content update, one fan asked “Can you please give us a 60fps patch on the PS5?”

In a surprise response, Technland confirmed that “We're currently working on a next-gen patch for Dying Light 1 – more details coming in the future :)”

With Dying Light never getting a Pro patch, the game currently runs at a maximum of 1080p and 30fps on consoles (aside from the Series X which managed 60fps through Xbox’s FPS Boost). While it is safe to assume that this promised update will offer 60fps on all new systems, it will be interesting to see whether the game sees a boost to resolution too. The hardware is certainly capable of it, though we will have to wait and see how comprehensive this update proves to be.

While the start of the generation saw some publishers take advantage of the newer hardware by making players pay extra for PS5 and Series X|S versions of games, the generally agreed upon method has been to offer cross buy between the generation of devices. Such is the case with Elden Ring, which will support Xbox Smart Delivery and a free PS5 upgrade.

Following the release date announcement and gameplay reveal for Elden Ring at Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Kick Off, the game’s publisher Bandai Namco released a ‘fact sheet’ offering more details on the game.

Alongside the confirmation of dynamic weather, a seamless world and character creation, Bandai Namco revealed that the cross-gen game will not punish PS4 and Xbox One players who wish to later upgrade.

On Xbox, the game supports Microsoft’s Xbox Smart Delivery, meaning that players can easily switch between the Xbox One and Xbox Series version of Elden Ring based on whatever system they are using.

While slightly different (though fundamentally the same), PS4 players who later manage to purchase a PS5 will be able to update to the PS5 version of the game for free.

With games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and NBA charging players extra for cross-gen versions of their respective games, it is good to see FromSoftware and Bandai Namco not partaking in these tactics.

KitGuru says: Are you excited for Elden Ring? What system will you play it on? Are pricier cross-gen versions of games justifiable in your opinion? Let us know down below.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was well received by most Star Wars fans following its initial release in 2019. Since then, the game has gone on to sell over 10 million copies. While Respawn Entertainment released a next-gen patch for the game, Jedi Fallen Order may soon receive a bespoke next-gen version.

As discovered by Gematsu, the German USK ratings board recently rated Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. While releasing next-gen versions of older games is not uncommon, this move is interesting as the game was already patched with PS5 and Series X|S improvements back in January.

The patch in question added higher resolutions, improved frame rates, and better post processing. As such, it is curious to see what other improvements Respawn Entertainment would have planned for this native next-gen experience. It is possible that PS5 may benefit from the improved haptics and adaptive triggers, but with no further details currently, it is anyone’s guess.

Of course, while seeing further improvements on PS5 and Series X|S would be welcome, it is also possible that this may simply be a repackaged version of the already ‘enhanced’ Fallen Order with no other improvements. Hopefully this is not the case however. We will have to wait and see.

The Yakuza series has seen a recent resurgence in popularity ever since the launch of Yakuza 0 back in 2015. Since then, the long running franchise has seen its expansion to a number of different platforms through remasters and remakes. Judgment is a spin-off of the Yakzua series which launched exclusively on PS4 in 2019. Now, the game is coming to next-gen systems, and for the first time, is coming to Xbox.

The remastered release of Judgment is said to arrive with “enhanced visuals” and will run at 60fps. Currently this is all that is known about the remastered release. On PlayStation 4, the game ran at just 900p, with the Pro console upping the resolution to 1080p – which is still relatively low for today’s standards. Furthermore, the game ran at just 30fps. As such, it will be interesting to see just how much better looking and better running the game will be with this remastered release.

The biggest surprise perhaps with this release, is the fact that Judgment will be coming to the Xbox Series X and S – a first for the game. While the Yakuza series has historically been PlayStation exclusive, the series has been slowly making its way to other platforms, so this multi-platform release does make sense. While the game has not yet been announced for PC, Judgment remastered will be coming to Google Stadia.

Judgement remastered will launch on the 23rd of April 2021 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Google Stadia, and will cost $39.99. Unfortunately, PS4 players who already own the game will not receive the remaster for free.

Square Enix’s Avengers game has struggled to get the attention that the publisher had hoped since its launch back in August of 2020. Being a live-service title, the game’s developers ‘Crystal Dynamics’ is betting on its many promised updates to bring the game back into the limelight. Despite the slow start, the studio has now announced that its next ‘War Table’ stream will take place in just a few weeks.

The next Avengers War Table stream, which will give fans “a glimpse of the future” has been announced. The Stream will take place on the 16th of February and is said to focus on “Marvel's Avengers Operation: Hawkeye – Future Imperfect”, as well as the previously promised next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X|S updates.

Hawkeye will be the second of many promised additional post-launch characters. The first character was Kate Bishop, who was added back in December (though was originally intended for an October release). The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Marvel’s Avengers were initially intended to release in 2020, though this was delayed into 2021.

While it’s clear that Square Enix’s Avengers game is not currently where the publisher had hoped the game would be, both due to delayed content and a generally lukewarm reception, it is good to see Crystal Dynamic getting the ball rolling once again in 2021.

Hopefully the War Table on the 16th of February will offer a much more encouraging look at the future of Marvel’s Avengers.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the game? Can Crystal Dynamics turn this ship around? What characters would you like to see added in the future? Let us know down below.

One of the biggest selling points of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series of consoles are their ability to ray trace reflections, shadows and more. That being said, only a handful of ‘next-gen’ titles currently offer the functionality. While the recently released Hitman 3 launched with no ray-tracing support, the game will reportedly receive an update in the future, adding the feature.

In an interview by Xbox Wire with Maurizio de Pascale, the CTO at IO Interactive, it was revealed that “We see Hitman as a ‘live game’ and our launch date on January 20 is just the beginning of a journey, in which we’re going to keep working on the game and adding new features.”

One of these features is reportedly ray-tracing, with Pascale revealing that “We’ve already started working on RT technology for the renderer in our Glacier engine, and once that’s deemed ready for prime time, we’ll definitely bring it to the Series X|S hardware.”

Though there was no word of ray-racing coming to PS5 (as the publication in question is an official Xbox affiliate), the feature is seemingly also confirmed for Sony’s console due to the limited hardware differences between Sony and Microsoft’s consoles.

Of course, ray-tracing is a relatively heavy feature and often arrives with a great deal of sacrifices to other aspects of a game. It will be interesting to see what sacrifices have to be made to add ray-tracing on Xbox Series X|S and PS5.

During this transitionary period between the new generation and the – now old – generation of consoles, many publishers have gone back to update their library of games to take greater advantage of these new consoles and their extra power. The latest game receiving a next-gen patch is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – and the best part is that it’s entirely free.

Announced on its website, EA revealed that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has gotten a next-gen update, saying “Some of you may have noticed a new title update being downloaded for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order™. Below you will find the release notes for this update, which improves backwards compatibility performance specifically on the latest generation of consoles.”

The updates brings with it three main improvements:

  1. Improved framerate on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
  2. Improved dynamic resolution ranges, for a higher resolution experience on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5
  3. Improved post-processing resolution for Xbox Series X and PS5. (Not Xbox Series S)

Going into greater specifics, the PS5 sees its framerate increased to a locked 60fps (up from an average of 45fps on last-gen hardware). Overall resolution has increased to 1200p, with a post-processing resolution reaching 1440p.

The Xbox Series X offers two different game modes: a performance mode and a ‘normal’ mode. The performance mode locks the framerate at 60fps, similar to PS5, but instead of a locked 1200p, the Series X’s resolution will fluctuate dynamically between 1440p and 1080p. The normal mode meanwhile offers a less consistent framerate, but increases postprocessing resolution to 2160p, with rendering resolution fluctuating between a full 4K and 1512p.

Lastly, the Xbox Series S only increases the framerate to a locked 60fps from an average of 45fps on last-gen systems – with no other changes.

Though the next-gen patch does not drastically change the game in any major way, it creates a more pleasant gaming experience. For the price of free, the upgrade is certainly welcome.

With the release of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, console players can now for the first time experience 120fps gaming. Despite 30fps typically being the standard on consoles, a surprising number of titles have seen 120fps support added to its games. Following the latest update, those with a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S can now play Fortnite at 120fps.

With the release of update 15.10, Epic Games has now added the ability for Fortnite to run at 120fps on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, Fortnite can now run at 1440p and 120fps (instead of 4K and 60fps). That being said, in order to achieve this, “shadow settings, post processing, and streaming distances are slightly reduced, but volumetric clouds, physical rim lighting, and high-quality shaders remain enabled.”

The Series S meanwhile also supports 120fps but at 1080p. Interestingly, the Series S previously only ran at 1080p 60fps. With this latest update, the 60fps mode has been bumped up slightly to 1200p, making for a sharper image. As with the Series X and PS5, the 120fps mode also comes with some other compromises, namely “shadow resolution and other settings are reduced and volumetric clouds are disabled.”

Fortnite’s original next-gen patch launched alongside the consoles themselves back in November. It is therefore encouraging to see more updates added to take even further advantage of the new hardware. Hopefully other live-service games follow suit, allowing those with next-gen systems to have as many options as possible.

Since the announcement of the studio’s formation back in 2018, Xbox fans have been eagerly awaiting news on The Initiative’s first project. Though we have yet to see anything from the studio, new leaks have suggested that the game will be a “3rd Person stealth action game” with “experimental” elements.

In a recent episode of ‘The Xbox Two’ podcast, Jez Corden of Windows Central and Rand al Thor discussed The Initiative’s upcoming and first project, claiming that the game will be a 3rd Person stealth action game set in a cyberpunk world, with an emphasis on stealth elements.

The game will seemingly include seasonal content, suggesting that it may feature live service elements in some way, though they weren’t clear on exactly how this would pan out. Furthermore, it is claimed that this game will not rival the likes of Uncharted and The Last of Us in its presentation. Instead, the game will fall in line more with Remedy’s games.

Despite being positioned early on as a AAAA studio, the insiders claim that this has created incorrect expectations, with the studio reportedly having been built to be ‘small and nimble’.

Lastly, Corden and Thor expect news on the game to be revealed soon, perhaps even as early as The Game Awards, which will be taking place on the 10th of December. Since the announcement of the studio, fans have been excited to see what will come of it. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

With the transitionary period between the PS4 and PS5 generations, Ubisoft has been one of the most consumer friendly and supportive publishers when it comes to offering upgrades for its – now previous generation – games. One of these titles set to receive enhancements is Rainbow Six: Siege, which will see the game playable with a dynamic 4K at 120fps on the PS5.

Detailing the enhancements via the PlayStation Blog, Ubisoft announced that the free upgrade for Rainbow Six: Siege, which is set to go live on the 1st of December, will offer:

  • Performance Mode: Target 120 fps with 4k Dynamic Resolution Scaling
  • Resolution Mode: Target 60 fps with 4k Resolution
  • Activity Card support for Ranked, Unranked, Newcomer, Quick Match, & Events so players can dive into the game faster
  • Improved lighting
  • Depth of field improvements
  • Faster loading
  • Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers support

All these enhancements will be made available for free to all those who currently own a copy of Rainbow Six: Siege. You need not worry about leaving your friends behind either, as the game will offer full crossplay support between the generations of consoles.

Lastly, all progress will be fully transferable between consoles, including all in-game items and purchases, ensuring that the transition is seamless.

The Xbox Series X will share many of the same enhancements as the PS5 version – save for the DualSense exclusive features and the Activity Card support. The Xbox Series S meanwhile will target 60fps at 1080p. These upgrades will be made available to all for free from the 1st of December.

Since it was first announced that Microsoft had purchased ZeniMax Media for $7.5 Billion, fans of Bethesda and its titles have been curious as to whether the console manufacturer intends to limit the publisher’s titles to Xbox platforms in the future. The company’s CFO has offered a hopeful statement on the matter, claiming that Microsoft plans for its titles to be “either first or better” on Xbox, meaning there is a chance they will find their way onto other platforms.

As reported by VGCand transcribed by Seeking Alpha – Xbox’s chief financial officer ‘Tim Stuart’ spoke at the Jefferies Interactive Entertainment conference, and claimed that “What we’ll do in the long run is we don’t have intentions of just pulling all of Bethesda content out of Sony or Nintendo or otherwise.”

According to Stuart, Microsoft’s plan for Bethesda is for its games “in the long run, to be either first or better or best or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We will want Bethesda content to show up the best as — on our platforms.”

This “better” experience may not even allude to anything do with the game itself, but according to Stuart may be as simple as the game coming to Game Pass, saying “if it shows up best in Game Pass, that’s what we want to see, and we want to drive our Game Pass subscriber base through that Bethesda pipeline.”

While this acts as neither a confirmation nor a denial of exclusivity, it is encouraging nonetheless to see that those who opted to purchase a PS5 or Nintendo Switch may still be able to play future Bethesda games, even if it isn’t the “best” way to play.

Over the course of the current generation, we saw the first real introduction to the notion of games as a service. Many of these most popular titles are still very much healthy and active, and as such will continue to be supported long into the life of the next-gen consoles. For Destiny 2, players will have to wait a little bit to experience the full fat next-gen version. Luckily the wait will only be minimal however, as Destiny 2’s next gen patch will arrive on the 8th of December, bringing with it some exciting additions.

Making the announcement on its website, Bungie revealed that “the stars have aligned, and the next generation of console gameplay begins in the launch window for Beyond Light. As we continue to improve Destiny 2, we’re taking the opportunity to optimize the experience you’ll have on this new hardware.”

While we already knew that Destiny 2 would receive a next-gen patch, details were sparse on the when and how of it all. Bungie has now confirmed that “the next generation optimized version of Destiny 2 will launch on December 8,” though “things like faster load times and cross-generation play will be available on November 10.”

Come the 8th of December, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X players will benefit from 4K resolution, 60fps gameplay, faster load times, and cross-generational play within their respective ecosystems. Lastly, in a welcome surprise, Destiny 2 on next-gen consoles will offer an FOV slider, allowing players to tweak the field of view to their liking. The Xbox Series S will receive all these same benefits, except resolution, which will be capped at 1080p.

Destiny 2 on PC has always vastly outperformed its console counterparts, and with how beautiful the world of Destiny 2 is, and how satisfying the guns feel, it’s exciting that console players will be able to experience it all in 4K and at 60fps when the update goes live, free for all on the 8th of December.
