AMD's new HD6790 has already proven to be a great performer for the gaming masses, delivering HD gaming capabilities without breaking the bank. Today we are looking at the new XFX HD6790 Edition which features a lovely, custom made dual fan cooler.

As we have said before, AMD are marketing the HD6790 at the 1080p gaming masses, with ‘balanced performance and price' being the main focal point. They used a similar strategy with the last gen HD5770 and it was a big seller for AMD partners. If you are building a new media center to pair up with a large High Definition television and don't want to make too many compromises, is this the ideal purchase?

Without question, 2010 has been a great year for gamers. Both AMD and nVidia have released fantastic graphics cards at all price points and there really has never been a better time to upgrade your system.

If you had £300 burning a hole in your wallet and wanted to improve your gaming system, what makes the best value for money purchase?

There are many options to choose from. On the nVidia side you could opt for the ever popular GTX460's in SLi, or perhaps the stunning new GTX570. If you prefer AMD graphics cards then you could opt for a HD6970, or even a Crossfire solution … but which?

This is why we are here today and it gives us a good opportunity to look at the new XFX HD6850 dual fan cooler cards. At £144.15 each including vat, you could pick up a Crossfire setup for under £300 …. but does it make sense?

To compare today we are putting the XFX HD6850's head to head against a selection of performance video cards from various manufacturers. The only criteria is that they must not exceed a price point of £300 inc vat. Later in the review we will also show how the HD6850 cards perform across three screens. We also present some video footage of the cards in action. AMD are leading the way with three screen gaming right now, and trust me, it really is something you need to experience first hand to truly appreciate.

First lets look at the potential solutions for the single screen performance gaming section of our review:

Palit GeForce GTX 460 Sonic 1GB GDDR5 (in Sli)

We couldn't have a £300 performance gaming test without including the GTX460 in SLi. The only problem was finding a 1GB card that was selling in the UK right now for £150 (or less) inc vat. Our good friends at Yoyotech supplied us with two of the Palit Sonic cards which run at 700mhz core and 3600mhz memory. Two of these cost £280 inc vat, so we are well within the monetary limits.

Inno3D GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5

Next up is the Inno3d GTX570, another card we have reviewed. This nVidia solution is £283 inc vat, so it falls within the £300 guidelines with room to spare. It is the highest performing single chip gaming solution on the market right now (under £300), although it doesn't support 3 screen gaming. Unless you buy two.

HIS Radeon HD 6970 2GB GDDR5

We have reviewed many AMD HD 6970's, and as they are all reference clocked right now we opted for the best deal. The HIS HD6970 retails for £284 inc vat meaning it falls well within our £300 limit.

Last friday AMD released the HD6870 and HD6850 series to a warm reception. Many journalists (including myself) admired the competitive price points with class leading performance … finally AMD had the performance edge to compete directly with the GTX 460's.

Today we have one of the first pre-overclocked HD6850's – the XFX HD6850 Black Edition. So new in fact that it has been hand selected from the production process and shipped to us in the reference HD6850 box. Being Guru's of Kit however, we did manage to get a picture of the final retail box, not even off the production line.

As many of you will already know, XFX have three series of cards within a range. The standard version, the XXX editions with moderate overclocks and the Black Editions with the highest overclocks. The model we are looking at today is the fastest card in the HD6850 range and has been certified and warranted to run long term at 820mhz core and 1100mhz (4400mhz effective) via the GDDR5 memory.

Product code : HD-685X-ZNBC
Core clock : 820MHz
Memory clock : 4.4GHz
Stream Processors : 960
Output config : DP+HDMI+DUAL DVI(1x DVI-I, 1x DVI-D)
External power : 1x 6pins
Cross fire connection : 1x

It would be hard to miss the launch today of the AMD HD6850 and HD6870. You will probably have already read our reviews of several of the partner cards. If you haven't then check out the front page of KitGuru.

Scan have been working with XFX on competitive pricing for their HD6850 card and right now it is retailing for £133.57 inc vat.

£133 inc vat, but already sold out

We have been receiving emails this morning complaining that our link to Scan shows a ‘preorder', with hints of a ‘paper launch'. After speaking with XFX it appears that they have already sold out and more stock is coming into the UK channel.

XFX has assured us that they can satisfy demand and that this is not a limited offer. They've told KitGuru that customer products will be shipped on a ‘first ordered, first shipped' basis – so you should place advanced orders now.

KitGuru says: If you want one of these soon, get your preorder in.

When nVidia released the GTX460, everyone was literally blown away – this was a mid range card that utterly dominated the market and delivered staggering levels of performance, particularly when overclocked. AMD had left a big hole in its range, from the 5770 to the 5850 – with only the lightweight 5830 offering any resistance in the £130 to £200 market. The headroom on nVidia's GTX460 card was incredible, with voltage tweakable solutions today hitting 1GHz on the core. AMD haven't been asleep on the job though and the new 6800 series is a direct reply to the serious questions the GTX460 has been asking.

XFX are one of AMD's key partners now, having parted company with nVidia to concentrate solely on AMD graphics cards. For this launch article today we have decided to concentrate on the XFX HD6850, a card which features a custom cooling solution. XFX have told us that this card will be sold for around £155 inc vat – meaning it directly targets reference clocked GTX 460's and overclocked 768mb models.

Firstly, we need to address the naming conventions, the HD6850 isn't a direct replacement for the HD5850, after all the HD5850 was initially released around £250, not £150.

AMD are focusing on tight price points and ensuring they try and deliver the best value for money products to market.
