Last month, we caught wind of an upcoming Dell XPS 12 hybrid-tablet, much like Microsoft's Surface offerings. While we had a look at some details at the time, more specifications have made their way online, ahead of the official unveiling coming up this month.

We already know that the XPS 12 will feature a 4K display, cramming the massive resolution in to a 12.5 inch form factor. However, now we also know that it will be sporting some serious hardware under the hood as well.

The XPS 12 will have an Intel Skylake CPU inside, 8GB of RAM and it will come in several SSD sizes. For I/O there will be two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI port and an SD card reader. These specs come from a report on WinFuture, though we have seen leaked internal documents in the past.

The tablet itself will slot in to a solid keyboard, unlike the Surface, which uses a soft keyboard/smart cover hybrid. Dell is apparently going to reveal the XPS 12 at an event on the 21st of October, so things will be more official then.

KitGuru Says: It looks like the Microsoft Surface is going to have a pretty big competitor soon, though Microsoft likely has a new version of its tablet up its sleeve for launch this year.

On the back of news that Dell and Microsoft have teamed up to push the Surface Pro 3 for enterprise use, leaked internal slides show that Dell has a Windows tablet of its own up its sleeve. The XPS 12 is going to be a Surface-like Windows tablet, with an attachable keyboard and a trackpad that the company claims will “work flawlessly”.

The XPS 12 will also be ahead of the Surface 3 in terms of specs, featuring a 4K display of its own, though that may be a bit of a drain on battery life. Speaking of which, according to the internal slide, the tablet is rated for 10 hours of battery life under use.

There will be two cameras, one 8 megapixel on the back and another 5 megapixel on the front. Thunderbolt 3 is supported and Dell has come up with its own stylus known as the ‘active stylus'.

Unfortunately, we don't know anything about the CPU or RAM inside so that part is still up in the air. However, the date ‘October 2015' is found on the slide so presumably, that is when Dell plans to launch its Surface competitor.

KitGuru Says: The Surface has become quite popular recently, though it remains to be seen if other companies will be able to give Microsoft any serious competition. The 4K display may be quite the selling point for Dell's tablet but if it drives the price too high, then it may be overlooked.

Today we are going to look at one of the latest, and perhaps most interesting notebooks in Dell’s range, the XPS 12. This aluminum convertible Ultrabook offers a ‘flip and fold' motion and features a Corning Gorilla glass screen with Full HD Display.

Dell refer to the XPS 12 as a ‘convertible Ultrabook’, which does a reasonable job of explaining the dual purpose nature of this model. There are a few other convertible notebooks on the market which compete directly with the Dell XPS 12, most notably the Lenovo YOGA which uses a slightly different mechanism.
