Spec Ops: The Line earned a reputation as one of the best first-person shooters of its time. Unfortunately, any newcomers may miss out on the game moving forward, as it has mysteriously been delisted from Steam.

As spotted by Eurogamer, the Steam Store listing for Spec Ops: The Line has now been updated with a notice to say that the game is no longer available for purchase. The game, which was developed by Yager and published by 2K Games, had previously been available without issue and the delisting has come without warning, so we're unsure exactly what occurred behind the scenes here.

Spec Ops: The Line does have a particularly brutal story and is one of the more intense war-set games to be released. Still, the game received plenty of praise for its release back in 2012.

While the game may no longer be available through an official store like Steam, PC keys can still be found for sale on various sites, so the game is still technically available without resorting to piracy.

KitGuru Says: Older games are often delisted due to expiring music licenses, so that could play a role here. Hopefully 2K Games or Yager Studios can provide an update later this week.

Yager Development, the studio behind Spec Ops: The Line, The Cycle and a cancelled version of Dead Island 2, is now the latest game developer to attract interest from Tencent.

Following on from acquiring a minority stake in Remedy Entertainment last month, Tencent has now acquired a majority stake in Yager. The company already owned a minority stake, but Tencent upped its investment in Yager this summer. While Tencent now holds a majority stake in the company, the studio will remain independent, with no changes planned to management or company structure.

In a statement, Yager explained that this will pave the way for more projects to enter development, as well as studio expansion:

“Tencent’s new investment shows a great deal of trust in us and confidence in the huge potential behind the creative pivot of ‘The Cycle’, our high-stakes PvPvE shooter. For us, the majority stake means we have the resources to expand the studio and the games in development. With Tencent we now have a powerful, globally operating partner to support our strategic plans for YAGER.”

Yager Development was first founded in 1999 and the studio released its first game, Yager, in 2003. The studio rose to prominence in 2012 after the release of Spec Ops: The Line. Since 2017, the studio has released two games – Dreadnought and The Cycle.

KitGuru Says: We're currently in a time where many independent studios are being snapped up by larger publishers. With this investment, Yager will be able to remain independent and work on a variety of different games.

Throughout this console generation, Deep Silver has been passing the Dead Island 2 project to multiple developers, with the game seemingly getting stuck in development hell each time. Now, a build of the game from 2015, one year after the game was first announced, has leaked onto the internet.

The build was apparently uploaded and then shared on 4Chan. Normally these 4Chan leaks can be disregarded but it turns out, this one is completely legit. The build of Dead Island 2 is dated June 2015, meaning it was the last iteration of the game being worked on at Yager before the project was moved to a new studio.

Several videos of gameplay from the leaked build have been posted to YouTube, giving us a look at how the game was shaping up five years ago. Eurogamer has confirmed this build of the game as legitimate too, and has verified that it was a build crafted by Yager, best known for Spec Ops: The Line.

Shortly after the June 2015 build, Yager and Deep Silver parted ways over creative differences and Dead Island 2 has been in the hands of Dambuster Studios ever since. With that in mind, the version of Dead Island 2 floating around at the moment won't be the same as what eventually comes out.

KitGuru Says: This is a very interesting turn of events, after all, it is not often that a playable build of an unreleased or cancelled version of a game leaks like this. Deep Silver will likely have a few words to say about the matter in a couple of days time.

At this point, it would be easy to forget that Dead Island 2 was ever announced. At one point, the game was being developed by the folks at Yager with a release date planned for 2015, but publisher Deep Silver pulled the plug, reassigning the project to a new studio. We've heard very little about the game since then, but apparently it is still happening.

As far as we know, Sumo Digital is still at the helm, the same studio currently behind Crackdown 3 for Microsoft and Team Sonic Racing for Sega. Earlier this week, a Dead Island mobile spin-off game was released, which led to questions on Twitter surrounding Dead Island 2 and its current status.

The official Dead Island 2 Twitter account replied with the following: “What's going on is that it's in development and we won't be showing more until we're ready. Appreciate the wait is painful, but Dead Island 2 is still coming.”

Back when Yager was working on Dead Island 2, the series seemed to be taking a more colorful, fun route. However, developers originally working on the game have since confessed that their vision clashed with Deep Silver's, which led to the project being scrapped and rebooted at Sumo Digital.

KitGuru Says: At this point, we might see next-gen consoles before we see Dead Island 2. The game's various development issues have certainly taken their toll. Were any of you looking forward to Dead Island 2 back when it was first announced?

Last month, the future of Dead Island 2 was brought in to question after Deep Silver parted ways with the project's developer, Yager. Deep Silver at the time said that it would be finding a new developer for the project, rather than outright cancelling it. Now in an interesting turn, Dead Island 1 developer, Techland, has said that the studio might be interested in taking over the sequel.

Techland is the studio that initially came up with the Dead Island franchise. The studio has since gone on to find new success with Dying Light, which was arguably a better game and is due to get an expansion later this year.

Speaking with VideoGamer at Gamescom, Techland Producer, Tymon Smeklata said that he would “love to go back to Dead Island”. “I think there is a place for both franchises to strive in the market. As long as someone would be able to find something that would make them different, that would draw a clear line, ‘Okay, here's Dead Island, here's Dying Light,' and I think that's doable, then why not?”

Obviously this isn't some sort of confirmation that Techland will return to the Dead Island franchise. While Deep Silver did seem to fall out with Yager, it also distanced itself from Techland a few years back after the first Dead Island.

KitGuru Says: While Dead Island wasn't quite the game everyone wanted it to be, Techland has gone on and improved its craft with Dying Light, so the studio might be a good pick for Dead Island 2. However, I'm still a little disappointed that Yager got dropped from the project, what we had seen so far seemed like a fun direction for the game to head in, with a less serious tone.

Earlier this month, Deep Silver announced that it would be taking Dead Island 2 back to the drawing board with a new developer, after Yager Productions and the publisher ran in to creative conflicts. Now, the team that spend the last two years working on Dead Island 2 has filed for insolvency as a direct result from the early cancellation of its main project.

The news came by way of press release, which notes that all other branches of Yager are fine and moving forward with their own projects as previously planned. The employees that are affected by the Dead Island 2 cancellation also have their wages secured for the next few months.

20140408032126-600x320

Yager Productions was in charge of Dead Island 2's development, it was a separate studio to the rest of Yager Group and its sole purpose was the development of the next game in Deep Silver's franchise. The insolvency filing only affects Yager Productions, rather than Yager Group, which gives the company a chance to re-organize its plans for the entity.

Yager's other notable projects include Dreadnought, an upcoming spaceship war game. Yager Productions was taken off of Dead Island 2 as the developer and Deep Silver had different visions for the game. The project has not been cancelled entirely though, there will apparently be a new developer put on the project at some point.

We hadn't seen much of Dead Island 2 so far but it seemed to be taking a less serious approach to the world compared to the first game. It is possible that this is something Deep Silver and Yager didn't see eye to eye on, although we don't know for sure.

KitGuru Says: People had some pretty positive impressions of Dead Island 2 after trying it out at trade shows. I do wonder how the game will turn out now that it is being taken back to the drawing board.

The publisher of the Dead Island series, Deep Silver, has announced that it has ended  its relationship with Dead Island 2's developer, Yager, meaning that the German company will no longer be part of the game's creation. Moving forward Deep Silver plans to announce who will be taking over the development of the game, but at this time it's anyone's guess.

“With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve. After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner YAGER,” Deep Silver said in a statement (via PCG).

Part of the reason for the ending of the relationship seems likely to be the game's progress. It was already pushed back from its intended Q1-2 2015 release to an unspecified date in 2016.

It will be a while longer before we can give this poor gun some ‘dentistry' with a shovel to the jaw

With Yager out of the picture however, it's down to us to figure out which other developer could now be working on the game. One suggestion has been Techland, the creators of the original Dead Island and its sequel, Riptide. The last game it worked on was Dying Light, so it's open world zombie slaying experience is unparalleled. It also recently put one of its main projects, Hellraid, on hold.

KitGuru Says: Coincidence? Seems like a mighty one. Do you think Techland is now secretly working on the new Dead Island game?

The original Dead Island was never hailed as the greatest game ever or revolutionary in a way beyond its debut trailer, but it did offer a fun way to slap zombies with your friends. Dead Island 2 on the other hand, is following on from the trend of many games recently announced at E3 and will have drop in/out multiplayer, for up to seven other people.

“You can play alone if you want,” game director Bernd Diemer told GameTrailers, “but as soon as you're connected and you're willing to play with other people, they will join your world, your server.”

deadisland
Dead Island 2's trailer doesn't quite have the weight of the one from the original game…

This is the same sort of singleplayer-multiplayer that we've seen in Watch Dogs and the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity, where the multiplayer is designed for people you don't know to just show up in your world at random when the option is turned on. It seems more geared towards you playing with strangers than friends, because let's face it, when was the last time any of us managed to coordinate seven of our friends to do anything at the same time?

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST262ZbNcos']

These seven other players can't be killed, as the developer didn't want to make Dead Island 2 a competitive game, but you do compete with them for kills and weapon drops.

KitGuru Says: Trying to coordinate that many cooperative players sounds like an exercise in futility. I'm calling it now, Dead Island 2 will be full of people running around, breaking immersion and anything in the game world they can at every turn. Maybe it's just me, but surely zombies really aren't much of a threat either, when there's that many people around you?
