Despite some initial concerns, Sony's PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers have been pretty well received thanks to a solid library of games available at launch. Soon, the service will get even better thanks to the addition of the Yakuza series.

Recently after a brief period off of the service, the full Yakuza series returned to Xbox Game Pass, giving subscribers the opportunity to play through Yakuza 0, the Kiwami remakes of Yakuza 1 and 2, as well as the remasters for Yakuza 3, 4 and 5, as well as the grand finale to the Kiryu saga, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

Now, those who are subscribed to PlayStation Plus Extra (£10.99 per month) or PlayStation Plus Premium (£13.49 per month) will also get to play through the full series. Starting in August, the library will be updated with Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. The remaining games in the series will be added “later this year”.

If the action combat of the original series isn't for you, then Yakuza: Like A Dragon makes a great jumping on point for newcomers to the series. The game stars a new cast of characters and makes a number of gameplay changes, including a move to turn-based combat and an RPG party system. Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be available to PS+ Essential, Extra and Premium subscribers in August.

KitGuru Says: The Yakuza games are engrossing, with a great mix of humour and intense story moments. There is so much content to get through that they end up being a great value add for services like PS+ Extra and Xbox Game Pass too.

Update (28.07.22): Sony has now officially confirmed next month's free PS+ titles. In August, subscribers will get two major PS5 titles, as well as an older but very popular indie game.

Just as the previous leak suggested, Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4 and PS5), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (PS4 and PS5) and Little Nightmares (PS4) will all be available to claim for all PS+ subscribers.

Original Story (27.07.22): We're coming up towards August, which means a new set of free games are on the way for PS+ subscribers. Next month, those subscribed to the entry-level PS+ Essential tier will get some very decent games, including Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.

billbil kun, a Dealabs user who accurately leaks all PS+ games a week or so ahead of Sony's official announcement, has returned with an update for August. Next month, Sony will be giving away Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (PS4 and PS5 versions), Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS4 and PS5 versions) as well as Little Nightmares (PS4).

For those who don't know, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 was an early cross-gen title, offering an excellent remake of the classic Tony Hawk games. Vicarious Visions did a great job with the remake and many were hopeful they would return to recreate Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4, but unfortunately, the studio was later merged with Blizzard and is now tasked with working on major Blizzard remasters, like Diablo II: Resurrected.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon, otherwise known as Yakuza 7, is a fresh game in the series, offering new characters, locations and an entirely new plot separate from previous titles in the series. While previous Yakuza games had an action combat system, Yakuza 7 has a party-focused turn-based combat system and it works very well. Personally, it is my favourite Yakuza game and the studio behind it is already working on a sequel.

Finally, Little Nightmares is an acclaimed indie game that originally released in 2017. The game tells a dark, whimsical story taking inspiration from common childhood fears and having players confront them. The game reviewed well, averaging an 81 overall on Metacritic.

KitGuru Says: Yakuza 7 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater are must-haves for those subscribed to PS+ in August. Typically, these leaks are accurate and arrive about one week before Sony's official announcement, so we should get proper confirmation on this next week.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio successfully took the Yakuza franchise in a new direction with Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon, swapping out action combat with a new turn-based party system and introducing a new cast of characters. Now, it looks like Yakuza 8 is nearing a reveal, as the first screenshots of the game have been spotted.

Recently, Japanese YouTuber, Mikuru Asakura, went to the studio to interview Masayoshi Yokoyama. Some of the video is filmed on the main studio floor, with developers going about their days and working on Yakuza 8. Due to this, some monitors seen in the video are displaying scenes from the new game, giving us our first screenshots:

As reported by Famitsu, in one of the scenes seen in the video, we can see Namba and Adachi discussing something. In another screenshot, we see an afro-less Kasuga. This is off-screen footage, so we can't really draw many conclusions about graphical quality. The most interesting part about these screenshots is that it confirms a couple of returning characters for your party from the previous game.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio should reveal Yakuza 8 properly later this year, perhaps in September when the Tokyo Games Show takes place. Presumably, the game will release on Xbox, PC and PlayStation on day-one.

KitGuru Says: Yakuza 7 is my favourite game in the series and even though we don't see much of Yakuza 8 in these screenshots, I am very pleased to see Namba and Adachi returning to the party in the next game. Hopefully some of the other party characters also return.

Over the last five years, there has been a huge boom in popularity for the Yakuza series, putting the franchise in a healthy position in the western market. As a result, SEGA has invested extra money into the latest game in the series, Yakuza: Like A Dragon, bringing the first English dub option to the franchise in 15 years.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon previously released in Japan back in January for the PlayStation 4. However, the game will be making its way to the rest of the world, complete with an English dub in November, just in time for the release of next-gen consoles. This week, a new trailer for the game dropped, showing off all the combat classes available:

As we can hear in the trailer, this also gives us a small feel for the English voice acting. Yakuza: Like A Dragon also features 20 different ‘Jobs', each with their own unique finishing moves for combat, as well as other abilities.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon is releasing outside of Japan on the 13th of November for PC, Xbox One and PS4. The game will then be made available on Xbox Series X at launch, with a PS5 release date set to be announced later on.

KitGuru Says: Yakuza: Like A Dragon is very different to other games in the series, with completely new gameplay systems and combat, shifting it from an action game to a turn-based RPG. Are any of you planning on picking this one up later this year?

Yakuza: Like a Dragon, otherwise known as Yakuza 7, has been out in Japan for a while now, with a worldwide release scheduled for later this year. Since the game is already out in Japan, DLC has also been rolling out, although the latest could cause some controversy, with the latest paid expansion including New Game+ and access to a higher difficulty.

Yakuza 7 already has some scepticism surrounding it, in part due to a big shift in the combat system. The game has moved away from action-based real-time combat to a turn-based system. Now, the Japanese Twitter account for the game has also confirmed New Game+ will be a paid option, as will a higher difficulty mode:

The Google translation into English isn't perfect but it does describe New Game+ and a high difficulty mode as part of a paid expansion pack. Of course, since the game isn't out in the rest of the world yet, it isn't necessarily true that the same paid DLC will make its way over seas, but it seems to be another idea Sega is using as part of new experimentation with the Yakuza series.

Yakuza 7 wouldn't be the first game to release a paid challenge pack of sorts. Nintendo itself has done this with titles like Breath of the Wild.

KitGuru Says: The Yakuza series has traditionally had a legendary difficulty and New Game+ option as part of the main game, so turning it into paid DLC is going to cause some controversy. How do you all feel about this idea?
