As Unreal Engine becomes more and more ubiquitous, players have started to appreciate some of the industry’s more unique and bespoke internally-developed game engines. RGG Studio of Yakuza / Like a Dragon fame have dabbled with Unreal in the past, though they have now reaffirmed their commitment to the Dragon Engine.

In an interview with the Japanese publication Type.jp – and translated by ResetEra user ‘Dooble’ – Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s tech lead Yutaka Ito spoke on the studio’s use of its bespoke Dragon Engine, saying:

“when creating ‘Ryu ga Gotoku’ we absolutely must not do away with the Dragon Engine , and we will continue to develop in-house engines.”

Ito continued, “Dragon Engine concentrates its development resources on the functions necessary for ‘Ryu ga Gotoku’, and the biggest advantage is that new features can be added quickly. If you are using a general-purpose engine, you can send an email to support and get a response in about 3 days, but if you ask the programmer next to you, it will only take 5 seconds. I think this difference is huge.”

As mentioned, RGG Studio have used Epic’s Unreal Engine for the 2023 spin-off / remake ‘Like a Dragon Ishin’. That said, the remainder of the studio’s titles since 2016 have utilised RGG’s own Dragon Engine to a great deal of success.

Hopefully the team continues to develop their own tech for the sake of Like a Dragon and the industry as a whole.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the latest mainline entry in the long-running Yakuza (now Like a Dragon) franchise. Though it was originally a rather niche series, the Yakuza games have seen a strong and rapid growth over the past generation – with Infinite Wealth having managed to ship an impressive 1 million copies in just a week.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the team behind the Like a Dragon series – RGG Studio – said “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth 1 Million Units Shipped Globally. We are incredibly grateful to all our friends around the world for their support. Thank you.”

For context, the previous mainline entry in the series – 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon – took almost 3 years to sell 1.8 million copies.

Considering the fact that Infinite Wealth achieved over half of this in just one week suggests that the latest title could wind up being the best-selling entry in the franchise’s nearly two-decade-long history.

Last week, Sony announced the full list of titles set to be added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. As always, Sony giveth and Sony taketh away – with nearly a dozen titles set to be removed from the service next month.

With November’s PlayStation Plus additions now officially live and available for subscribers, the console manufacturer has revealed the full list of games which are set to be taken off the service come the 19th of December (via PlayStationLifestyle):

  • Caladrius Blaze
  • Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo HD Edition
  • El Hijo – A Wild West Tale
  • Foreclosed
  • Friday the 13th
  • Legends of Ethernal
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
  • The Escapists 2
  • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon

While not an insignificant number of titles are leaving, it is fortunate to see that a majority of PS Plus’ heavy-hitters remain for now. That said, if you did want to give any of these games a try, you have a little under a month to do so.

In case you missed it, November’s PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium titles are now available, including the physics-based sandbox Teardown; Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen; Dead Island: Riptide Definitive Edition and Superliminal – to name a few.

Yakuza 7: Like A Dragon kicked off a new era for the franchise, introducing a new cast of characters, a new combat system and a new adventure with twists and turns to follow. Now a few years on, the sequel, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is finally set to release. Just ahead of the launch in early 2024, the developers have now announced the minimum and recommended PC system requirements.

Like other Yakuza titles, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth won't be too taxing to run on PC hardware. If you have an older PC, the game should run just as well as Yakuza 7. At minimum, you'll want a PC with an Intel Core i5-3470 or Ryzen 3 1200 processor, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 960 or RX 460 graphics card, making for a very low barrier to entry. This spec will get you running the game at 1080p/30FPS with low graphics settings.

If you want to make the jump to 1080p/60FPS, you'll want to meet the game's recommended system requirements, which call for an Intel Core i7-4790 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, 16GB of RAM and an RTX 2060 or RX 5700 graphics card.

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth will officially launch on the 26th of January.

KitGuru Says: Yakuza 7 ended up being my favourite game in the franchise, so I'm looking forward to the sequel, although I am a tad concerned that Kiryu is going to be a main character, as one of my favourite parts about Yakuza 7 was the step away from the older games towards something fresh and new.

Nvidia has had quite the run of DLSS 3-supported titles in recent months, with Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty arriving in September, Alan Wake 2 in October and now, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the latest AAA game to sport the tech at launch.

On the 10th of November, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 officially goes live for all players. On PC, RTX 40 users will benefit from DLSS 3 with Frame Generation, utilising AI to boost frame rates by up to 1.8X at 4K with max graphics settings. If you have an older RTX graphics card, you can still use DLSS 2 upscaling to gain a performance boost. Additionally, the game will also support Nvidia Reflex, allowing you to reduce overall system latency for more responsive gameplay.

Aside from Modern Warfare 3, Remnant II is getting a new DLC on the 14th of November, putting the game back in headlines. This particular title also launched with DLSS 3 support, alongside DLSS 2 and Reflex.

The final DLSS-supported title coming this month is Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, a new spin-off in the Yakuza series, focusing on beloved protagonist Kiryu and bridging the gap between Yakuza 7 and its upcoming sequel, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

KitGuru Says: We haven't seen DLSS 3 in many competitive multiplayer games, so it will be interesting to see how well the tech holds up in a fast-paced shooter like Call of Duty.

It looks like we're in for another Xbox games showcase. While the summer showcase focused on first-party games, this month's unveilings will focus primarily on third-party studios.

We won't be seeing what's next for Starfield, Hellblade, Fable or Avowed at the next Xbox showcase but we will get updates on plenty of third-party games. The stream is planned to last for around 30 minutes and a few games are already confirmed to be showing up, including the likes of Alan Wake 2, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Ark: Survival Ascended. The stream will go live on the 25th of October at 6PM BST.

Those three aren't such surprising picks. Xbox has had plenty of marketing deals with Sega in recent years, with several focusing on the Yakuza series, which has grown in popularity outside of Japan over the last five years. Aside from that, Xbox was also the stage setter for the Ark 2 announcement, so seeing the Survival Ascended remaster popping up here isn't much of a shock.

These are just a few of the games we expect to see though, so there should be a few surprises in store. Needless to say, as this is third-party focused, don't expect to see any announcements from Activision Blizzard either.

KitGuru Says: We'll have to wait and see what ends up at the show but the teaser doesn't have me too excited. Alan Wake 2 comes out in a week and Ark: Survival Ascended has done nothing but anger fans of the original game. However, it will be good to see Yakuza making an appearance. Yakuza 7 was my favourite of the series, so I have high hopes for the sequel.

The release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon back in 2020 represented the first game in the series to feature a full set of English voice acting since the launch of the very first title all the way back for the PS2. While future games will continue to offer the option for Japanese or English voices, the upcoming Like a Dragon: Gaiden will unfortunately only include the former – at least at launch.

Taking to Twitter, the English voice actor for Like a Dragon: Gaiden’s protagonist Kazuma Kiryu – Yong Yea – said “Since Like A Dragon: Gaiden is a few weeks away and many may not know about this, thought I should let you know the English dub will not be available on the 11/8 [8th of November] launch date and will release as a post-launch patch (no official date yet). Hope you'll look forward to it!”

While somewhat disappointing, the Like a Dragon series has long been known for its Japanese VA, and so many long-time fans are likely to default to Japanese anyway. That said, for those who have gotten accustomed to the English dub thanks to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, its sequel ‘Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’ will seemingly include English from the get-go, with Yong Yea adding:

“For Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, I don't know what I can and can't say, so I'll relay what's currently public. If you go to its Steam listing, English audio is checkmarked, suggesting simultaneous release for Japanese and English dubs. Pumped for y'all to play it on 1/24/2024!”

SEGA has been known in the past to release games in the West months after their Japanese launch in order to work on the dub and overall translations. Fortunately, even though you might have to wait for an update to play the game with English voice acting, it is welcome to see the publisher ensure that Like a Dragon: Gaiden gets a simultaneous worldwide release.

Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth is the next game in the long running Yakuza (now known as Like a Dragon) series. Announced back in June of this year, the game was stated to be arriving some time in early 2024. Now, we have an exact release date.

As part of Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG Studio’s) most recent Fall Summit, the Like a Dragon team showed off a lengthy trailer for the upcoming RPG ‘Infinite Wealth’, revealing that the game is set to launch on the 26th of January.

Interestingly, this means that Infinite Wealth will be arriving on the exact same day as Tekken 8 – and just a few days ahead of another massive JRPG ‘Persona 3 Reload’ (launching on the 2nd of February).

Like a Dragon: Infinite wealth is the next mainline entry in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series in which “an unexpected chain of events sets two legendary ex-yakuza, Kasuga Ichiban and Kazuma Kiryu, on a larger-than-life adventure as dual playable protagonists.”

NetEase has been a big name in the mobile gaming space for a while now, but in recent years the company has pushed into the console gaming space. Two of its biggest moves saw NetEase acquire Suda51’s Studio Grasshopper Manufacture alongside partnering with Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi for the opening of a new studio, following his departure from SEGA. Now, both creators have spoken on the many benefits afforded to them by these acquisitions.

In a lengthy interview conducted by VGC, Suda51 of No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw fame discussed how NetEase has given him and his team the freedom needed to thrive, saying “Thanks to the support and backup we now get from NetEase, not only do we have a bigger studio and more people, the environment itself has become much easier to work in, it's become a lot easier to express my creativity and put more energy into being creative in general.”

Adding to this, Suda51 continued, “I mean, we do have a schedule and a budget and everything, but it's not like anyone's saying, ‘OK, the game has to be out on this day'. There's nobody [at NetEase] who thinks that if you get a game out as soon as possible, it's going to be good – they understand that's not how it works. They give top priority to creativity and quality, so it's great that we're able to have the freedom of time and schedule to really put the work into the games that we need to put into them, and they're really understanding about that.”

Toshihiro Nagoshi – known for Yakuza (Like a Dragon) and Super Monkey Ball – mirrored these sentiments, saying “The general environment [in this country] means it's hard to try new things in Japan, but NetEase is very ambitious and wants to expand its business by succeeding worldwide and including the console game category, which aligns with our ambition.”

The full interview can be found HERE and includes many more anecdotes regarding how working for NetEase has been good for the creators. All-in-all it seems as though both creators are so far happy with their choices and so hopefully their current in-development titles end up being their best yet. We will have to wait and see.

In recent years we have witnessed the incredibly rapid adoption of digital gaming, with the ratio of physical to digital sales far in favour of the latter. Some publishers have begun to take this opportunity to cut out physical sales entirely – such as with the upcoming ‘Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name’.

Teasing the upcoming Yakuza game with a character poster, RGG Studio (Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio), took to Twitter to say “And next up to bat is… Find out in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name available for download Nov 9, 2023.”

With no mention of a physical version and all purchase links directing only to digital stores, it seems as though Like a Dragon Gaiden will not be getting a physical release – at least not in the West.

This does make some degree of sense as both Sony and Microsoft have digital-only console variants – and the distribution of digital games is significantly easier and cheaper than producing physical discs for retail stores.

Even with all the evidence pointing to fewer and fewer people playing games using discs, it is still disheartening to see games opting for the digital-only route. Hopefully this does not end up negatively affecting the game’s sales.

  • Carmageddon: Max Damage (PS4)

While not an insignificant number of titles are leaving, it is fortunate to see that PS Plus’ major heavy-hitters remain for now. That said, if you did want to give any of these games a try, you have a little under a month to do so.

In case you missed it, July’s PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium games are now available, including the likes of It Takes Two, Sniper Elite 5, The Ascent, World War Z and more.

Each month, those who are subscribed to the Humble Choice service are privy to a number of games – letting you obtain a handful of titles for a relatively low price. Following a leak earlier this week, humble have now officially announced this month’s Choice line-up – including heavy-hitters such as Yakuza 4, TemTem, The Outer Worlds and more.

Available right now, July’s Humble Choice offerings include 8 games in total, averaging just over £1 per title (based on Humble Choice’s £8.99 monthly price), with the line-up being as follows:

  • The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition
  • TemTem
  • Yakuza 4 Remastered
  • Roadwarden
  • Kraken Academy
  • Merchant of the Skies
  • Ozymandias
  • Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate

One of the headlining titles is The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition: The most complete and up-to-date version of Obsidian Entertainment’s space RPG, featuring all of its post-launch DLC and graphical enhancements.

TemTem meanwhile is a “massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure” in which you can “catch every Temtem, battle other tamers, customize your house, join a friend's adventure or explore the dynamic online world” – in essence it is a Pokemon-like title with MMO elements. The game left Early Access last September, with Temtem continuing to receive a consistent string of updates.

Ever since the game left Early Access, TemTem has remained relatively pricey, with the title currently seeing its biggest discount on Steam (33% off). Still, even with this discount, being able to get the game and 7 other titles for a 3rd of the Steam price of TemTem alone is a massive saving. If you have been interested in any of these games, the Humble Choice line-up for July is certainly worth considering.

Last week we reported on the fact that the mainline Yakuza (Like a Dragon) Complete Series Collection was added to the GOG storefront, allowing for DRM-free access to all of these well-loved titles for a heavily discounted price. Unfortunately, it seems as though this new port has removed some pretty major names from its credits.

As discovered by Reddit user ‘Timo653’ the GOG ports of all the Yakuza games have had their credits altered, removing multiple staff members and even entire teams, including Lab42 and QLOC (the teams behind the original PC ports).

Perhaps most surprising is the fact that Toshihiro Nagoshi was removed from all of the credits. For the uninitiated, Nagoshi was a long-time SEGA developer who first joined the company all the way back in 1989.

In the 30 years since, Nagoshi went on to create the Monkey Ball series, Daytona USA and most-famously the Yakuza franchise. Having worked on every single game up until 2020’s Like a Dragon, it is disappointing to see that SEGA have removed his name from all of the credits following his departure. Every single developer deserves to have their name credited and so hopefully SEGA apologises and fixes this grave error.

The Yakuza games have become very popular in the west over the last few years. Once considered a cult classic, the series now has a huge global fan base but it can be intimidating for a newcomer to jump in. If you want to pick up all the games in one place at a pretty big discount, then you'll want to hit up GOG.

The Yakuza games are now officially available DRM-free on PC through GOG. To celebrate the occasion, you can pick up the Yakuza Complete Series collection on GOG at a 70% discount, bringing the price down to just £27.19.

The collection includes seven Yakuza games focusing on the Kiryu saga. You'll get Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 1 & 2 (these are remakes of the original two games), as well as the Remastered versions of Yakuza 3, 4 and 5. Finally, the collection also includes Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, which was the last game starring Kiryu as the main character.

The collection does not include Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon, which stars a whole new cast of characters and switches from action-based combat to turn-based combat.

KitGuru Says: The nice thing about GOG is that with DRM-free games, you'll be guaranteed access to these titles for decades to come, without fear of service shutdowns or delisting. If you want a more modern gaming experience, the GOG Galaxy launcher can help you manage your collection and installed games.

A couple weeks ago Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG Studio) announced that they would be hosting a 2023 Summer Summit on the 16th of June in which we would get information on the team’s new and upcoming projects. Despite this, the studio made an appearance during Summer Game Fest Kick Off with Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Once again, ahead of the 2023 Summer Summit, RGG Studio showed off their other in-development project – Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Arriving in Early 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite wealth is the next mainline entry in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series in which “an unexpected chain of events sets two legendary ex-yakuza, Kasuga Ichiban and Kazuma Kiryu, on a larger-than-life adventure as dual playable protagonists.”

The lighthearted trailer seems to suggest that Infinite Wealth is set outside of Japan, somewhere in the USA. With how much Like a Dragon’s identity has been tied to its Japanese locations and culture, it will be interesting to see how these protagonists navigate this entirely new situation.

Regardless, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth looks to be a whole lot of fun. Hopefully we get to see more including gameplay during the upcoming 2023 RGG Studio Summer Summit.

With the launch of this latest generation of consoles, we have seen a wide reaching number of publishers increase the price of their current-gen titles to $70 – with them citing various reasons for its necessity. It seems as though SEGA might be the next publisher to embrace the $70 game, with them set to review their prices in the not-too-distant-future.

As part of SEGA Sammy’s fiscal earnings report, the CEO (Haruki Satomi) and CFO (Koichi Fukazawa) were asked about the ongoing trend of increasing game prices from the previous standard of $60 to a new AAA minimum of $70.

As reported by VGC, in response the executives said “In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year.”

They continued, “We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions.”

If SEGA were to increase its AAA games to $70 it would be interesting to see which titles end up being boosted to this premium tier: Sonic the Hedgehog? Like a Dragon? Persona? We will have to wait and see.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is an interesting game, as while the title is part of the long-running Yakuza [Like a Dragon] franchise, Ishin is a remake of a spin-off which only released in Japan all the way back in 2014 for both PS3 and PS4. Almost a decade later and the game is finally releasing worldwide. With it being quite different to the mainline series, it is nice to see that a ‘Combat Demo’ for Like a dragon: Ishin! has now been released.

Available right now across the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store and Steam, publisher SEGA have released a combat demo for Like a Dragon: Ishin! With the Like a Dragon mainline series now opting for a turn-based-combat system, Ishin represents a rather big shift away from what players now associate with the series, and so it is good to see a demo being released which primarily focuses on the game’s differences from other entries in the series.

The description for the demo reads as follows: “We hope you enjoy this small taste of the intense and over-the-top action featured in Like a Dragon: Ishin! What if the famed hero of Japan’s restoration, Sakamoto Ryoma, had joined the era’s most infamous league of swordsmen, the Shinsengumi? Experience the answer for yourself in this historical epic.

Featuring beautiful visuals brought to life via Unreal Engine, original performances from all-stars of the series, an enhanced battle system, and brand-new narrative content, Like a Dragon: Ishin! is itself a restoration worthy of its setting!”

It is worth noting that progress from the demo will not carry over into the full game, though considering Like a Dragon: Ishin! is planned to arrive on the 21st of February, those already set on buying the game do not have too long to wait in order to play.

As expected by the looks of the trailer, the game isn't particularly heavy on the system, so you should be fine to play as long as you have a mid-range graphics card released in the past six years. As a samurai framed for the murder of his mentor and unable to distinguish friend from foe, he will fight for justice and challenge the course of Japan’s history.

Minimum:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system

It is that time of the year again – the Steam Autumn Sale is officially live, offering discounts on hundreds of games spanning every genre you could ask for. If you need some help deciding on a game to pick up, we've got a few recommendations for you.

For starters, the definitive version of Persona 5 Royal is now on Steam and if you didn't pick it up at launch last month, you can now get it for 30% off, bringing the price down to £34.99. If you didn't pick up Spider-Man Remastered when the excellent PC port arrived in September,  you can now get it for 25% off, bringing the price down to £37.49. Cyberpunk 2077 is in much better shape now compared to launch and CD Projekt Red is cooking up an expansion for next year, so if you want to jump in and play the base game before then, you can get it for 50% off, bringing the price down to £24.99.

Monster Hunter Rise isn't a standout title in terms of graphics, but the gameplay is perhaps the best that the franchise has to offer. The PC version of Monster Hunter Rise offers very solid performance, and you can now get it for 50% off, bringing the price down to £16.49.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon released a couple of years ago at this point, refreshing the franchise with new gameplay and combat systems,  as well as a new cast of characters, making it a perfect jumping-on point for newcomers to the series. This is my personal favourite Yakuza game, so it gets a high recommendation for its under £20 sale price.

These are just a few recommendations. While technically not on sale, you should also check out a few recent indie games – Honey, I Joined a Cult is a fun game taking on the Prison Architect formula, but the twist this time around is starting a grassroots cult. Vampire Survivors is an incredibly addictive game and at only £3.99, it is a steal even without a sale discount. Fortunately, during the Autumn Sale, there is a 15% discount, bringing the price down to £3.39.

KitGuru Says: Are you planning on picking anything up during the Steam sales? Are there any games you would like to recommend?

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is currently the latest entry in the long-running and highly praised action-adventure beat 'em up RPG franchise. Taking quite a departure from all previous series entries, Like a Dragon’s producer has now revealed that the game was heavily inspired by the worldwide anime phenomenon One Piece.

Started all the way back in 1997, One Piece is one of the longest-running and most popular anime of all time – going stronger than ever after a quarter of a century. The manga/anime has inspired many over these decades, and according to RGG Studio producer Masayoshi Yokoyama Like a Dragon was highly influenced by One Piece, saying in a recent interview with Crunchyroll:

“I've never really talked about this before, so I'm not sure if I should just go for it now, but for [Yakuza] 7 I was really, really inspired by One Piece. To me, Ichiban is basically Luffy. And around him there's Zoro and Nami and basically the rest of the party, you know? One Piece's party composition was on my mind so much during writing that it was a massive influence.”

With this knowledge in mind, the inspirations are clear – with Ichiban’s tendency to do good and help others for little gain leading to him drawing a crowd of friends mirroring Luffy’s character in One Piece.

With another Like a Dragon game on its way, it will be interesting to see whether more One Piece parallels are put into place.

Unreal Engine has seemingly taken over the video games industry, with the game creation toolset being used by indie and AAA studios alike across all regions of the industry. One of the latest studios to announce their shift to Unreal Engine is Like a Dragon’s RGG Studio, with the team now explaining the reasons why.

For the past half a dozen years or so, RGG Studio have released a plethora of titles using their internally developed Dragon Engine, giving each title a familiar yet distinct feel and look. With the upcoming Like a Dragon: Ishin however, the team revealed that they have moved to Unreal Engine, with series executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama saying to IGN:

“The Dragon Engine at this point is kind of a bit of an old engine. We have made a lot of minor updates over the years for it, or we've made a lot of minor updates over it, but we haven't made any major updates. So probably next what's coming for would be a major update if we had to do anything.”

Like a Dragon: Ishin has been developed using the now-outdated Unreal Engine 4, and so when asked whether the team will next use UE5, Yokoyama stated “So, regarding [Unreal Engine 5], yes, we are researching it. We are kind of looking at it and saying, what are the merits of each? What's the merit of the Dragon Engine? What's the merit of the Unreal Engine? And when it comes down to it, the Dragon Engine…it's really perfectly designed to represent a city at night. The nighttime city. Whereas Unreal, it's better at showing nature and daytime and that sort of feel.”

Many of RGG Studio’s previous titles have taken place in cities during the nighttime, and so with RGG Studio moving away from the Dragon Engine, it is safe to assume that future titles beyond Like a Dragon: Ishin will take players to a bunch of new places. The Dragon Engine is still impressive for what it can do, and so hopefully the team doesn’t fully abandon it.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Yokoyama’s statement? Are you glad to see them move away from the Dragon Engine? Do too many games use Unreal Engine? Let us know your thoughts down below.

The Yakuza franchise is bigger than it's ever been, with the latest titles seeing success across multiple consoles, a spin-off in the form of Judgment has now become its own successful sub-series and a live-action adaptation is in the works. Despite this, it is still surprising – though exciting – to see the previously Japanese exclusive ‘Yakuza Ishin remade for current-gen systems with a worldwide release.

Announced at the recent PlayStation State of Play (and elaborated upon further via the PlayStation Blog), SEGA unveiled ‘Like a Dragon: Ishin’ – a from-the-ground-up remake of the PlayStation 3/4 title – saying:

“Hello everyone! Today is a very special day. Not just for RGG Studio, the masterminds behind Yakuza: Like a Dragon, but for all our fans worldwide who have been eagerly awaiting the most legendary lost chapter from the creators of the Like a Dragon Series. We’ve read your Twitter comments, seen your fan content, and are beyond excited to announce that the action-packed samurai title of legend, Like a Dragon: Ishin!, will launch globally in February 2023.”

Like a Dragon: Ishin is an action-adventure historical thriller set in a fictionalised version of 1860s Kyoto. Despite this, the game will feature familiar faces, with many of the most recognisable yakuza characters such as Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima playing roles in Like a Dragon: Ishin’s cast.

Unlike the past few games developed by RGG studio, Like a Dragon: Ishin utilises Unreal Engine 4: “bringing astounding graphical quality to the Like a Dragon franchise. Developing on Unreal Engine 4 has unlocked new textures and other graphical details that make Ishin’s gripping story one of the most cinematic tales in RGG history.”

Like a Dragon: Ishin is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The full details surrounding Like a Dragon: Ishin can be found HERE.

Back in 2021, we learned that Sega was looking to bring its Yakuza spin-off series, Judgement, to the PC platform. However, due to the game using the likeness of a Japanese celebrity, there were seemingly issues getting all parties to agree to a PC version. Now a year later, it looks like Sega may have found a way around this.

Judgement and Lost Judgement have now been rated for PC by the ESRB, indicating that an official reveal and launch should be on the way soon. PC versions of both games were spotted on the ratings board database, with both passing certification.

Typically, a game will be officially announced soon after obtaining an ESRB rating. Sega has found great success on Steam in recent years after bringing the entire Yakuza series over to the platform. Now, Sega wants to continue that success with Judgement, a spin-off that was previously limited to consoles.

Judgement shares a few similarities with Yakuza, but puts players in the shoes of a detective looking to solve a string of murders. Another Yakuza spin-off, Like a Dragon: Ishin is also in the works, alongside a direct sequel to Yakuza: Like A Dragon.

KitGuru Says: If you are a fan of the Yakuza games and prefer the action gameplay style of the Kiryu saga, then Judgement is worth trying out once it comes to PC. Unlike Yakuza 7, which went in a turn-based direction, Judgement stays true to the original games and offers similar action combat.

The Yakuza series has been going from strength to strength, with the latest entry taking the long-running franchise in a whole new direction – to great success. Two and a half years following the release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the team at RGG Studio look set to show off Yakuza 8 in just a few short days.

As reported by Gematsu, publisher SEGA announced that they will be hosting a ‘short episode’ of ‘Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV’ on the 8th of September at 8PM JST (12PM UK time). While little is known about what we can expect to see, the title for the episode is dubbed as “Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV #12.5: Sneak Peek Trailer Brought to You by the Director!” and will feature Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio director and executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama as well as product manager Masaya Santou

RGG Studio have been known primarily for developing two franchises in recent years: Yakuza, and Judgment. That being said, the team have previously revealed that they are working on a new IP, as well as Yakuza 8 and a potential 3rd entry in the Judgment series.

Of the three titles, Yakuza 8 seems to be the furthest in development, with the team already giving us some plot details, including the fact that it will continue the story of Like a Dragon with Ichiban Kasuga as the protagonist, and “the story will be set in the present day for the year the game goes on sale”. Furthermore, the stream taking place on the 8th of September at 8pm (JST) does not seem like a mere coincidence.

Regardless of what the announcement ends up being, we won’t have to wait too long to find out. With it having been 2 and a half years since Like a Dragon, it is exciting to be mere days away from getting a look at the sequel – assuming that is what ends up being announced. We will have to wait and see.

A couple of weeks ago we learned that the Yakuza series would be heading to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium in August. Today, Sony announced the full line-up of new PS+ games for the month, which includes much more than the Yakuza games.

These games will be available to those who are subscribed to PS+ Extra and Premium. Those subscribed to the base tier will still get free games this month though, and the selection is pretty good.

The list of titles landing on PS+ Extra and Premium this month include:

  • Yakuza 0
  • Yakuza Kiwami
  • Yakuza Kiwami 2
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands
  • Bugsnax
  • Metro Exodus
  • Trials of Mana
  • Everspace
  • UNO
  • Monopoly Madness
  • Monopoly Plus

All titles will be available to subscribers on the 16th of August. The service also grants access to a good selection of first-party games, like Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, God of War and more. Big third-party releases like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Stray are also included in the library at the moment.

KitGuru Says: This isn't a bad selection of games by any means, and it covers a good spectrum, from shooters, to horror, to JRPGs and even a few casual games.

Despite some initial concerns, Sony's PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers have been pretty well received thanks to a solid library of games available at launch. Soon, the service will get even better thanks to the addition of the Yakuza series.

Recently after a brief period off of the service, the full Yakuza series returned to Xbox Game Pass, giving subscribers the opportunity to play through Yakuza 0, the Kiwami remakes of Yakuza 1 and 2, as well as the remasters for Yakuza 3, 4 and 5, as well as the grand finale to the Kiryu saga, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

Now, those who are subscribed to PlayStation Plus Extra (£10.99 per month) or PlayStation Plus Premium (£13.49 per month) will also get to play through the full series. Starting in August, the library will be updated with Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. The remaining games in the series will be added “later this year”.

If the action combat of the original series isn't for you, then Yakuza: Like A Dragon makes a great jumping on point for newcomers to the series. The game stars a new cast of characters and makes a number of gameplay changes, including a move to turn-based combat and an RPG party system. Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be available to PS+ Essential, Extra and Premium subscribers in August.

KitGuru Says: The Yakuza games are engrossing, with a great mix of humour and intense story moments. There is so much content to get through that they end up being a great value add for services like PS+ Extra and Xbox Game Pass too.

July is shaping up to be a good month for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, with a few promising indie titles joining the library, alongside the return of several Yakuza titles, making the entire series playable from start to finish once again.

The Yakuza games returning to Xbox Game Pass was spoiled a little early, but with the return of Yakuza 0 and the two Kiwami remakes, subscribers can now play the entire series from start to finish once again.

Here's the full list of titles heading to Xbox Game Pass over the next two weeks, including supported platforms and dates:

  • Last Call BBS (PC) – Available today
  • Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami & Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Cloud, Console and PC) – Available today
  • DJMax Respect V (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 7th
  • Matchpoint: Tennis Championships (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 7th
  • Road 96 (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 7th
  • Escape Academy (Console and PC) – July 14th
  • My Friend Peppa Pig (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 14th
  • Overwhelm (PC) – July 14th
  • PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 14th
  • PowerWash Simulator (Cloud, Console and PC) – July 14th

As usual, there are some games cycling out of Game Pass this month. On July 15th, five titles will leave the service, including:

  • Atomicrops (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Carrion (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Children of Morta (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Cris Tales (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Lethal League Blaze (Cloud, Console, and PC)

As always, there will be another update with more games coming to Game Pass roughly halfway through the month.

KitGuru Says: The Yakuza series being complete on Game Pass is a truly great thing. Aside from that though, the July update isn't particularly exciting.

At the end of last year, some of the best Yakuza games left Xbox Game Pass, removing Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2. Now just over six months later, the full Yakuza series is returning to the service.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers can once again download and play Yakuza 0, as well as the Kiwami remakes for Yakuza 1 and Yakuza 2. The Yakuza Remastered Collection, which packages Yakuza 3, 4 and 5, is also available on Game Pass, in addition to Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, which is the grand finale to Kiryu's story.

If the older Yakuza games aren't doing it for you, then Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Yakuza 7) is also available on Game Pass now, introducing an entirely new cast of characters, new story, new locations and completely revamps the game's combat from a brawler to a turn-based game. I highly recommend Yakuza in this form, the switch to turn-based is handled very well and the new characters are all very likeable.

Microsoft hasn't officially announced that Yakuza has fully returned to Xbox Game Pass, but all the games are available to download and install across PC and console as of this morning, just as long as you have an active Game Pass subscription.

KitGuru Says: The Yakuza series has grown in popularity but it is still overlooked by many. If you've never tried the Yakuza games and are up for a lengthy crime drama with lots of twists, turns, likeable characters and some silly moments, then now is a perfect time to give it a shot, starting with Yakuza 0.

Xbox Game Pass represents excellent value for money, offering over 100 quality titles for a relatively low monthly cost. Unfortunately due to the nature of digital games and subscription services, third-party titles are only available until their contracts expire. Such is the case with the Yakuza series, with many of the games set to leave the service very soon.

Microsoft recently updated its ‘Leaving Soon’ section on Xbox Game Pass, revealing that Yakuza 0; Yakuza Kiwami and Kiwami 2 are all set to leave the service come the conclusion of 2021.

If you have yet to play these games, it is unlikely that you will find enough time to do so, as in total, these three titles take nearly 70 hours cumulatively to finish, and that’s not even taking the side missions into account – the majority of which are considered even better than the main story.

Trying to 100% complete all three games could take up to 300 hours – a daunting task even when given infinite time. Unfortunately, those wanting to play these titles through Game Pass will likely not have enough time to do so.

Yakuza 0, Kiwami and Kiwami 2 were all added to Game Pass back in 2020 meaning that subscribers had plenty of time to play these titles, however due to the way the service operates, these temporary titles are not given expiration dates until mere weeks before their removal.

While PlayStation Now’s line-up of titles are generally much less exciting, a large majority of the games added are permanent. Even when a PS Now title is only temporary, its expiration date is announced upfront, meaning subscribers can plan around its removal. Hopefully Microsoft improves this one aspect of the service as we go into 2022.
