The National Coalition Against Censorship, is once again running its annual youth film competition, with the theme of 2013 being video games, with potential prizes of up to a thousand dollars and several thousand more towards future film school tutelage.

Titled “Video Games in the Crosshairs,” the 2013 Youth Free Expression Project film contest describes video games as often being heralded as: “too violent, they make kids antisocial, they're bad for us. But when do gamers ever get to speak for themselves?”

If you're a budding film maker or just have a good idea and a semi-decent camera, maybe you should give it a shot (if you're from the US). All you have to do, is make a short film about why video games are important to you. What do you think of critics or reviewers, publishers and developers? Do you think games go too far or not far enough?

Here's a great video that won last year's competition:

If you want to contribute your talents to this competition, you have plenty of time as the deadline for sending in your film is 13th December. All you need do once finished, is upload it to Youtube and send over your link to the NCAC.
Your film needs to be a maximum of four minutes long and can use any sort of format: documentary, animation, music video, dramatic piece, whatever you feel like. Prizes available are:

  1. Cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250.
  2. A trip with a guest to New York City to attend the Youth Voices Uncensored event in the spring.
  3. A one-year complimentary student membership to the Rubin Museum of Art.
  4. The first place winner will received a $5,000 scholarship to the New York Film Academy.

Unfortunately for our international KG readers, this is only open to US residents, but perhaps you could help contribute to a foreign friend's project? You also need to be under 19 years old when submitting the film.

KitGuru Says: Whether you can compete in this or not, what sort of ideas do you guys have? Perhaps some of our readers could work together on something for this?
