The Shenmue III reveal will go down in history as one of the greatest on-stage moments at E3. Unfortunately, following a successful initial crowdfunding campaign, things started to go down hill. Now, it seems that Yu Suzuki isn't sure that we'll see a Shenmue 4.

Shenmue 3 was kickstarted back in 2016, promising fans a grand finale to the story laid out in the first two games. Trailers ahead of release proved divisive, the game went through multiple crowd funding efforts and eventually, it also signed on as an early Epic Games Store exclusive. Once the game finally released, it bombed critically and fans weren't too impressed either. This excellent video from Super Eyepatch Wolf does a great job of explaining exactly where Shenmue 3 let fans down.

Still, despite Shenmue 3's shortcomings, there is some lingering hope for a Shenmue 4, particularly following the recent anime adaptation, which was well received.

However, a sequel is seeming increasingly unlikely. As reported by Famitsu (via VGC), Shenmue creator, Yu Suzuki, recently spoke at an event celebrating the release of the anime series, confirming that there are no current plans for a new game, although he would like to make another one.

Given the reception to Shenmue 3 though, it might be tricky to crowdfund another sequel, and even trickier to convince a publisher to fully fund a new game.

KitGuru Says: Shenmue 3 did not have the smoothest road to release. At this point, I would rather see the anime continue and finish the story over a new game. Did many of you play Shenmue 3? Do you think they should make a fourth game, or is it time to move on?

While Shenmue 3 didn't exactly live up to expectations, Yu Suzuke's grand story will soon be told through another medium. Back in 2020, a Shenmue anime was announced to be in the works and now, it will be coming to Crunchyroll next year.

Shenmue: The Animation is an anime series based on Shenmue 1 and 2, with Yu Suzuki working with the writers to incorporate previously scrapped story elements. The series is being produced by Crunchyroll and Adult Swim, so it will air on Toonami in the US, and it will be available via streaming on Crunchyroll worldwide.

This week, the first trailer for the series released, revealing the 2022 release date. The series will run for 13 episodes, covering events from the first two Shenmue games, while expanding the story in certain areas. One Punch Man director, Chikara Sakurai, is also directing the series.

That is all we know for now, but we expect to hear more early next year. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The first two Shenmue games are very dated at this point, so being able to experience the story in a new form, like an anime, seems like a good idea. Will any of you be watching this next year?

Shenmue isn't a game for everyone, with even the latest entry to the series, Shenmue III, exhibiting dated and clunky mechanics. However, a lot of people are still interested in the story. Those fans will be getting a new way to experience the story, as Shenmue: The Animation has been announced.

Shenmue: The Animation is an anime series based on Shenmue 1 and 2, with Yu Suzuki working with the writers to incorporate previously scrapped story elements.

The series is being backed by Adult Swim (Toonami) and Crunchyroll, so it will air both on TV and via the Crunchyroll streaming service. Adult Swim being on-board also means there will be an English dub, in addition to Japanese voice acting.

The first season will be 13 episodes long, tackling the story of the first game and diving a bit into Shenmue II territory. Depending on how it turns out, we could see future seasons going beyond what we've seen in the games thus far.

KitGuru Says: I have very little interest in playing Shenmue in 2020 and due to its dated gameplay, many others likely feel the same way. With that in mind, bringing the story into a new medium seems like a good idea. What do you all think of this announcement?

After 18 years since its last entry, Shenmue 3 finally released earlier this month. The game’s original reveal in 2015 was met with much anticipation, with the Kickstarter becoming the most funded video game campaign ever at the time, having raised over $6.3 million. It appears that an 18 year wait hasn’t done much to increase the demand for a sequel in an objective manner however, as the game had the worst opening for the series, in its debut in Japan – even worse than last year’s remaster.

Reported by GamedataLibrary, the game sold 17,857 copies in its opening week in Japan. This is lower than Shenmue 1’s 257,775 copies in 1999, Shenmue 2’s 92,917 copies in 2001, and even the PS4 Shenmue 1 and 2 remaster in 2018, which sold 19,701 copies in its first week.

Furthermore, in the UK, the game debuted at no. 17 in the physical charts selling just over half of last year’s remasters of 1 and 2 on the PlayStation 4.

These numbers are troubling, especially in the wake of the game’s creator, Yu Suzuki, claiming to need to make 2 more games in order to finish the overarching story of the series. The charts do not reflect the absolute total copies sold however, as those who funded the game through Kickstarter are not included in these sales figures. The game received a mixed reception by critics, although fans appear to be more satisfied with the game.

Yu Suzuki has previously stated that good sales of Shenmue 3 is less important than being able to find the right partner to help release future titles, so while the sales of Shenmue 3 may be less than desired, fans may yet be able to experience the full story of Shenmue.

18 years after the release of its second entry in the series, Shenmue III finally came out yesterday. The series’ creator, Yu Suzuki, wrote a letter to the fans of the series in the credits of the game, pledging that he will “never give up” on trying to complete the story of Shenmue, saying “For as long as there are those who wish to see Shenmue live on, I will never give up on my own personal journey to complete its story. As with Shenmue III, the Shenmue story is with you”.

The original Shenmue released in 1999, and at the time was the most expensive video game ever to have been made. This afforded the game to have a level of world building and simulation that was unheard of up to that point. It also meant however, that after the release of Shenmue II in 2001 for the Dreamcast, the series was put on ice, with no major publishers willing to take the financial risk on a game that hadn’t turned a profit. Shenmue II would have required every Dreamcast owner to buy the game twice, in order for the game to be profitable.

Shenmue III’s surprise announcement on PlayStation’s E3 stage back in 2015 was therefore met with a massive amount of surpirse, and excitement. The game’s Kickstarter (which was one of its primary forms of funding) quickly became the most funded video game Kickstarter of all time, having raised over $6 million from fans.

Yu Suzuki has previously stated that despite the 18 year gap between Shenmue II and III, that the series’ story is only about 50% complete, with him having envisioned the series ending with at least 5 games. Despite all the hurdles faced during the development of Shenmue III, it appears that Yu Suzuki still holds strong to these beliefs.

In the letter, Yu Suzuki stated “I sincerely hope that, together, we can continue to spin the tale of Ryo and his adventures in Shenmue IV”. Only time will tell whether Shenmue III manages to succeed enough to warrant a 4th game, although according to Yu Suzuki, the financial success of Shenmue III is less important than being able to secure the right partners, in his quest to complete the story of Shenmue.

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign is about to end with just 60 hours left to go. Right now, the amount raised sits at just under $5 million as funding slowed down in the days following the campaign's announcement at Sony's E3 press conference.

To celebrate the campaign coming to an end, a new trailer for the game was released, showing off some in-development footage. At the time of writing, 55,660 people have backed the campaign for Shenmue's long-awaited sequel. However, some mixed-messaging caused confusion which may have hindered the campaign a bit.

When Shenmue 3 was announced, the internet was bombarded with hype but people quickly came to the realization that the $2 million funding goal was not all that realistic. It later came out that Sony would be providing some level of financial assistance, though series creator, Yu Suzuki admitted that the game was hoping to receive the bulk of its funding through Kickstarter.

It later came out that Yu Suzuki would actually need at least $10 million to create the ideal open world experience. Stretch goals up to that point were very vague and not particularly helpful to potential backers. That said, it is likely that we will see outside investors brought in to help fund the project.

KitGuru Says: Shenmue 3 is definitely coming out but it will be interesting to see how this Kickstarter campaign affects development. Particularly since the campaign seemingly didn't raise the amount the developer was really hoping for.

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter has been a bit of a somewhat confusing campaign. The whole thing initially launched at E3 on Sony's stage, with Yu Suzuki asking for $2 million to fund the initial game. However, it later came out that the Shenmue creator actually wanted at least $10 million in order to start expanding on the open world experience.

Now, the campaign page has been updated with new stretch goals, letting potential backers know what they could get in to the game should more money be raised. New goals include added quests, missions, events and in-game systems.

At $6 million, the battle system will be expanded on while at $6.5 million something called ‘ragdoll reaction' will be added in to the battle system. Honestly, all of the stretch goals are pretty vague and there isn't really any form of explanation for what a lot of these goals actually mean, which could make them a hard sell.

At $7 million the battle system will be expanded with ‘AI battling' and at $7.5 million there will be an additional ‘high ground battle system' added in, whatever that means. Beyond that, there are a lot of mini games being added in up until $8.5 million at which point parts of the map will be expanded on with new activities thrown in.

We already know that Shenmue 3 is actually going to need a lot more money than the Kickstarter is asking for, so if these extra goals are hit, we will likely see even more added. That said though, the crowd funding has slowed down significantly, currently sitting at $3.6 million raised with 20 days left to go. The bulk of that funding was raised within the first 24 hours of the campaign going live so it looks like Yu Suzuki may need to start looking at other sources of funding as it doesn't seem like the majority of it will be coming from Kickstarter.

You can see all of the new stretch goals, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Shenmue 3 managed to generate a lot of hype during E3 week but it is easy to see that funding has slowed down quite a bit. The amount raised was sitting at $3.5 million total around four days ago, when we last reported on the progress of this particular campaign and has now hit $3.6 million.  Do you guys think Shenmue 3 will manage to hit $10 million on Kickstarter?
