When the NZXT N7 Z590 arrived at our door we had a fair idea what to expect as Luke has reviewed the NZXT N7 B550 and I built a PC using the NZXT N7 Z490. This N7 Z590 follows the same approach where ASRock is the OEM for the hardware and NZXT works on the aesthetics to hide as much of the motherboard as possible under a set of shrouds and covers.

The post Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Pro AX Review – 300W for i9-11900K! first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
In our launch review of Intel 11th Gen Rocket Lake we expressed concern about the power draw of the Core i9-11900K. Today we are looking at three Gigabyte motherboards that support Intel Rocket Lake, with a close eye on the £300 Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Pro AX.

In our video we show the features and hardware in the ATX Z590 Aorus Pro AX, the Micro-ATX B560M Aorus Elite and the Mini-ITX Z590I Aorus Ultra and we also talk about the BIOS. While there is a good deal of difference in the hardware you find on each of the motherboards, it is notable that the BIOS set-up screens are very similar.

As you will see in our video, the BIOS is the source of some frustration as the majority of the features are set to Auto without any explanation as to what that means. This is one thing when it refers, say, to integrated graphics where we are dealing with On or Off but another thing entirely when we are talking about CPU voltage or Load Line Calibration.

With Intel launching its 11th Gen Core desktop processors today, we are also seeing an influx of new memory modules to take full advantage of the new platform. G.Skill is well known for pushing the boundaries of memory speeds and that isn't stopping anytime soon, with the latest kits providing speeds up to 5333MHz.

Today, G.Skill has announced six new DDR4 memory kits for the Intel Z590 chipset. At the top of the pile, we have the 16GB DDR4-5333 kit, running at 5333MHz speeds with 22-32-32-52 timings and 1.6V. If you need more capacity but don't want to sacrifice too much speed, then the 32GB DDR4-5066 kit is available with CL20 timings.

The 5333MHz kit was validated on systems featuring an ASUS ROG STRIX Z590-E Gaming WiFi, ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XIII APEX and MSI MEG Z590i UNIFY motherboards and an Intel Core i9-11900K processor, as shown in the validation screenshots below:

The rest of the new memory line-up includes 16GB DDR4-4800 CL17, 32GB DDR4-4800 CL20 and 64GB DDR4-4600 CL20 under the Trident Z Royal, Trident Z RGB and Ripjaws V memory series'.

Each G.Skill memory kit comes with Samsung B-die ICs, which are renowned for their overclocking capability, helping to achieve 4GHz+ and 5GHz+ speeds at a range of capacities and latency timings to suit different needs. All of G.Skill's new extreme high-speed memory kits will be available in Q2 2021.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: As usual, we're seeing very impressive speeds from G.Skill's latest memory kits. Are any of you planning on building a new PC in the coming months? Will you be picking up a high-speed G.Skill memory kit?

The news embargo has lifted on Intel 11th Gen Intel Rocket Lake-S so we know plenty about feeds, speeds and prices.  In addition we have discussed Core i7-11700K after a few hundred CPUs mysteriously went on sale early in Germany and France. Add in the fact that Intel launched its Z590 motherboards all the way back in January and you might think we can only now wait for the review embargo to lift on 30th March. Nope, there's still plenty to discuss.

One of the nuggets of information came from Der 8auer who did some nifty analysis using a photo of a delidded Rocket Lake CPU to calculate the die size.

After that he superimposed an Intel block diagram on the image to show the new Cypress Cove cores are much larger than the Skylake cores that Intel has been using in recent times. Cypress Cove is Intel's way of using Ice Lake cores on a 14nm fabrication process as they have been unable to use the intended 10nm process. We have known for some time that Intel has been obliged to cut the core count of Core i9 from ten cores to eight but seeing the bare Rocket Lake die drives home the point that they really had little choice in the matter.

We have been wondering why Intel is pushing the Z590 chipset so hard when H570 and B560 have very similar sets of features. When you factor in that Intel is allowing memory overclocking on non-Z chipsets then it boils down to you needing the Z590 if you want to overclock your CPU, and if you're not fussed about overclocking you can save money with H570 or B560.

We had a similar question hanging over Core i9-11900K as it looks like a decently binned version of Core i7-11700K with slightly better clock speeds and the addition of Thermal Velocity Boost which increases the speed of one or two cores, provided the temperature remains under control.

The breaking news is that Z590 supports a feature called Intel Adaptive Boost Technology that was not included in our technical briefing and which only broke cover in the past few days. Intel ABT allows your 11th Gen Core i9 to run at 5.1GHz on all cores, provided your Z590 motherboard has the correct BIOS support. We have received a steady flow of Beta BIOS for various motherboards and have every expectation that Intel ABT will be included in our launch review.

KitGuru says:  We have our doubts about the premium that is being charged for Core i9 and Z590, however the release of new features that are restricted to this hardware will certainly make life more interesting.

Both MSI and ASUS have revealed the MSRPs for their Z590 lineups, and by the looks of it, they are a bit pricey. In MSI's case, the pricing table clearly states that it's just indicative, meaning that the final price may still be adjusted – for better or for worse.

MSI's 500-series lineup will feature a total of 30 motherboards, with fifteen based on the Z590 chipset. For now, MSI has only shared pricing for eleven Z590 motherboards, but the other four should be announced shortly. The cheapest motherboard will come in at €185, but the most costly shoots up to €999.

The following table gives us a look at the prices across the range:

Name Price
MEG Z590 GODLIKE €999
MEG Z590 ACE €479
MEG Z590 UNIFY €379
MEG Z590I UNIFY €319
MPG Z590 GAMING CARBON WIFI €314
MPG Z590 GAMING FORCE €310
MPG Z590 GAMING EDGE WIFI €279
MPG Z590 GAMING PLUS €260
MAG Z590 TOMAHAWK WIFI €235
MAG Z590 TORPEDO €225
Z590 PRO WIFI €205
Z590-A PRO €185

According to MSI, some of the reasons behind such steep prices include the increasing cost of components and shipping – something ASUS has already mentioned. Other factors include the damages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and in the short term, the Chinese New Year. On the plus side, MSI doesn't expect to have supply issues for these motherboards.

ASUS' Z590 lineup pricing has also been revealed. Generally, they are pricier than MSI motherboards, with the lowest tier costing €189, while the most expensive goes up to €1516.

Here's a table with the ASUS Z590 motherboard lineup, including the respective pricing and availability of each model:

Name Price Availability

Hot on the heels of the Intel 500-series chipset announcement, Gigabyte has unveiled its latest Aorus motherboards based on the Z590 chipset. Six boards have been announced, including the Aorus Master, Aorus Extreme and diminutive Aorus Ultra.

Starting with the Z590 Aorus Extreme, this motherboard boasts a whopping 20+1 phase ‘true power' design, using 100A DrMos stages. There's also an 8-layer PCB a dual 8-pin EPS power connectors. Gigabyte also highlights the use of LAIRD 7.5W/mK thermal pads, which it claims can offer ‘4x the heat dissipation compared to traditional thermal pads'. The board also uses a NanoCarbon baseplate and its three M.2 slots use an enlarged ‘M.2 Thermal Guard II'. Connectivity includes 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports, 10GbE LAN and WiFi 6E.

Then there's the Z590 Aorus Master, this time using a true 18+1 phase design, with 80A stages and a 6-layer PCB. The VRM is therefore slightly less powerful than the Aorus Extreme, yet the Master still boasts LAIRD 7.5W/mK thermal pads and three M.2 slots with M.2 Thermal Guard II. There's no Thunderbolt port here, but there is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port, as well as 10GbE LAN and WiFi 6E.

As for the Z590 Aorus Pro AX, here the VRM is reduced to a 12+1 phase design, with 90A stages. We can also note regular WiFi 6 AX200 support, while LAN tops out at 2.5GbE. The Pro AX still offers support for 3x M.2 slots, once more with Thermal Guard II heatsinks, while there's also a new ALC4080 audio codec.

Arguably the most interesting of the bunch is the Z590I Aorus Ultra, as this is the Mini-ITX version. Despite its obvious size limitations, it still sports a 10+1 phase VRM, with 90A stages. Memory is of course limited to just two DIMM slots, while there's also two M.2 slots – one fed by the CPU, the other (on the back) by the chipset. The Audio codec remains with the last-gen ALC1220, while we can also note 2.5GbE LAN and 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port on the rear I/O.

Lastly, we come to the Z590 Aorus Elite and Aorus Elite AX. As the name implies, the key difference between these two is the inclusion of WiFi on the AX model, and they are otherwise identical, with a 12+1 phase VRM using 60A DrMOS stages. There's also three M.2 slots, but no mention of Thermal Guard II, suggesting the cooling may not be the same as the other boards. LAN once more tops out at 2.5GbE but there is still a single USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port on the rear I/O. The Elite does lose a couple of USB 3.2 ports compared to the Aorus Pro, however.

Gigabyte hasn't specified an on-sale date, but we would expect these boards to hit the market in the coming weeks.

After Intel introduced its 500-series chipsets yesterday, ASUS has announced a swathe of Z590 motherboards across the ROG, TUF and Prime families. There's some familiar names but a number of new features on show from these boards.

The first Z590 boards to be announced by ASUS include the ROG Maximus XIII Extreme, ROG Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial, ROG Maximus XIII Hero, ROG Strix Z590-E Gaming, ASUS Prime Z590-A and TUF Gaming Z590-Plus WiFi. As they are all Z590 boards, support is offered for Intel's 10th Gen desktop CPUs and the upcoming 11th Gen Rocket Lake processors. Z590 offers 16 PCIe 4.0 lanes for discrete GPUs, and four PCIe 4.0 lanes direct from CPU for Gen4 SSDs.

The Maximus XIII Extreme is the top of the line Z590 offering from ASUS, with an 18+2 power delivery design, with ‘highly capable and efficient integrated power stages'. DDR4 memory up to 5333MHz is supported, while up to five M.2 SSDs can be installed, with three native slots and a further two via ASUS DIMM.2 slot. Connectivity highlights include 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports and 8x USB 3.2 Gen2 ports.

The ROG Maximus XIII Extreme takes that same PCB, with the same key features as above, but slaps on a huge ‘full-coverage water block developed in tandem with the experts at EK'. ASUS says this block cools both the VRM and Z590 platform controller hub, delivering ‘the highest performance and the lowest temperatures in the most extreme gaming builds.'

Both of these motherboards also included ROG's Fan Controller module, which mounts to a 2.5in slot and offers 6x ARGB and 4x PWN fan headers. ROG Clavis also comes bundles with these boards, which is a new USB-C DAC that ASUS claims can offer ‘the absolute highest signal-to-noise ratio and lowest distortion in the final analog output'.

Just below the top-end is the ROG Maximus XIII Hero. This offers a 14+2 power stage design, and a total of four M.2 slots – two of which are fed by the CPU, and two by the chipset. There's also 2x Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, 6x USB 3.2 Gen2 Ports, and 2x USB 2.0 ports. ASUS also makes a feature of the new Realtek ALC4000-series audio codecs which are supported on ROG and ROG Strix Z590 motherboards.

ASUS TUF Gaming brand has enhanced its reputation over the last year or so, and with the TUF Gaming Z590 Plus WIFI, ASUS offers 14+2 DrMOS power stages and a 6-layer PCB. There's also 3x M.2 slots, a fanless PCH heatsink and a Realtek S1200A audio codec. Lastly, we come to the ASUS Prime Z590-A. This is ASUS' more entry-level series, though it still boasts 14+2 DrMOS power stages. There doesn't appear to be a rear Thunderbolt 4 port however, but there's still 3x M.2 slots, two of which include integrated heatsinks.

ASUS says these boards will be available ‘immediately' in the UK, though we haven't spotted any on sale at the time of writing.

As the expected launch of Intel 500-series motherboards approaches, Z590 boards have been pictured ahead of their announcement. The latest set of leaks include four ASUS motherboards: the ASUS Z590 Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial, the ASUS Z590 Maximus XIII Hero, the ASUS Prime Z590-A, and the ASUS TUF Z590-Plus WiFi.

The ASUS Z590 Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial looks like it will be the flagship 500-series motherboard from the Taiwanese manufacturer, featuring an embedded EK waterblock over the CPU socket and another on the chipset, lots of RGB lighting, and a silver PCB shielding that fuses with both waterblocks. As per the picture from @harukaze5719, this E-ATX motherboard features 2x PCIe x16 slots, one PCIe x4 slot, multiple USB internal connectors, from which 2x are USB 3.2 Gen2, 2x 8-pin Aux power connectors, 2x PCIe M.2 interfaces, and an LED display.

Jumping over to the ASUS Z590 Maximus XIII Hero, it has some similarities to the Z590 Maximus XIII Extreme Glacial. It also features an E-ATX form factor, RGB lighting, 2x 8-pin Aux power connectors, and 2x PCIe M.2 interfaces, but it comes with one extra PCIe x16 slot, one less USB 3.2 Gen2 interface, and a “less shielded” PCB. Instead of white, this model features a black and dark grey design similar to the ASUS Maximus XII Hero.

Rocket Lake-S CPUs may not be officially out yet but overclockers seem to have their hands on them already. This week, two videos appeared online, showing an extreme overclock attempt with one of Intel's unreleased CPUs 11th Gen Core CPUs.

Given what we know about the Rocket Lake-S line-up, this processor should either be the Core i9-11900K or the Core i7-11700K. The motherboard model used to achieve the 6.9GHz clock speed wasn't specified, but this post from VWorld suggests that it's a Gigabyte Z590 motherboard. Besides the CPU, the memory was also overclocked to a whopping 6666MHz at 1.83V.

The second video shows a closeup of the CPU-Z running, reporting the CPU instruction sets and Lx cache. As per the video, the processor supports both AVX512F and SHA, two instruction sets that are not supported on the current Comet Lake-S processors, and 48KB of L1 cache per core (384Kb) and 512KB of L2 cache per core (4096KB).

Intel is expected to announce its 11th Gen Core processors at CES 2021, running from January 11th to 14th, and launch them at the end of Q1 2021.

It looks like Intel 11th Gen might be closer to release than we initially thought. There's a new rumour going around the web, indicating that Intel will launch its 500-series motherboards on January 11th, the same day as the company's keynote at CES 2021.

As per the Weixin post shared by @9550pro, Intel 500-series motherboards will be divided into three chipsets: Z590, B560, and H510. The three chipsets will be allegedly announced on January 11th.

Specifications of this motherboard series have yet to be confirmed, but it's expected that these will be the last Intel desktop motherboards supporting DDR4 memory. Additionally, it will feature the LGA1200 socket, which allows these motherboards to support both 10th and 11th Gen Core CPUs, and it will be the first Intel desktop platform supporting PCIe 4.0.

According to this report, Intel hasn't set a date for the release of Rocket Lake-S yet, but according to other rumours, it will probably launch the new processors after releasing the 500-series motherboards, more precisely between the end of February and early March. If these launch dates are true, the motherboards will be available before the processors, exactly the opposite of what happened with the Comet Lake-S, where processors were available one month before the motherboards.

There's no obvious reason behind Intel's alleged decision to launch new motherboards first, but once they are available, people will at least be able to use them with a Comet Lake-S processor.

KitGuru says: Are you planning on upgrading your system in a near future? Will you be waiting for Intel to launch new CPUs first?

Intel has finally confirmed the release date of Rocket Lake-S. Scheduled for Q1 2021, the 11th generation of Intel desktop processors will support PCIe 4.0, and as usual, Intel claims that “it’ll be another fantastic processor for gaming”.

Intel's confirmation comes after HD-Tecnologia leaked the alleged roadmap of the 500-series motherboards. As per the roadmap, Rocket Lake-S and compatible motherboards will release in March 2021, more exactly on the 10th week of 2021, according to VideoCardz.

Rocket Lake-S is expected to be the last architecture to feature the LGA1200 socket. Nonetheless, Intel is planning to release the typical full set of motherboards including the entry-level H510, the mid-range B560 and H570, the gaming-oriented Z590, and the workstation W580 (scheduled for April 2021). The Q470 chipset won't receive a successor. It's also expected that Rocket Lake-S will be compatible with 400-series motherboards, just like Comet Lake-S processors will be supported on the 500-series motherboards.

HD-Tecnologia's report also points out that Intel's HEDT platforms won't be updated until late 2021. AMD is also mentioned, claiming that the company won't release new chipsets for the Zen3 processors. By the second half of 2021, when Zen3+ is expected to release, AMD will then release new chipsets.

With Intel confirming the release of Rocket Lake-S right when AMD is about to announce its Ryzen 5000 desktop series, everyone that was thinking about upgrading their systems might want to wait a bit longer. Both platforms are expected to be the last from their respective companies to use DDR4 RAM, given that DDR5 is ready to launch.

Intel also stated that more about Rocket Lake architecture will be disclosed “in the near future”.
