Sandfall hints that work has begun on Expedition 33 Switch 2 port

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was one of the standout RPGs of 2025, and now Sandfall Interactive has confirmed that it is exploring a Switch 2 version. However, the team says the port will require significant technical adjustments and may still be some way off.

Speaking with Automaton, studio CEO Guillaume Broche said the team is “interested in looking for a way” to bring Expedition 33 to Nintendo’s latest console but added that it is too early to announce anything concrete. Co‑founder Tom Guillermin expanded on the challenge, explaining that the Switch 2’s hardware presents limitations compared to PlayStation and Xbox: “It’s a big technical challenge because we tried to do something beautiful with the game, but of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X.”

Expedition 33 makes extensive use of high‑end Unreal Engine 5 features, including Lumen and Nanite, which do not currently run on Switch 2. Broche confirmed this directly, saying: “Yes, a lot of features don’t work on Switch 2.” Lead artist Alan Reynaud added that Epic is now introducing lighter alternatives such as Lumen Lite but noted that these updates will take time to roll out, meaning Sandfall will need to wait and evaluate engine changes before committing to a port.

These limitations have also made Expedition 33 difficult to run on PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, where the game requires major visual cutbacks to maintain performance. Even so, the team remains optimistic that a Switch 2 version is possible with enough optimisation. After all, if a demanding title like Cyberpunk 2077 can be reworked to run on Nintendo’s new hardware, then Expedition 33 should be able to follow suit once the necessary engine support arrives.

KitGuru Says: Expedition 33 is one of the most visually impressive UE5 games to date, so a Switch 2 version was always going to be a challenge. Still, Sandfall is clearly exploring the possibility, and with handheld-friendly Unreal Engine updates on the way, a port seems increasingly plausible.
