So far, all three Sonic the Hedgehog films have been successes, with the franchise bringing in more than $1 billion in box office sales. Sega and Paramount are keen to keep the ball rolling, with the fourth Sonic movie now wrapping filming, with the director teasing Metal Sonic as the primary adversary.
In the first Sonic film, our favourite blue hedgehog was primarily fighting Dr. Robotnik by himself, but in Sonic 2, Tails and Knuckles joined the cast. Then in Sonic 3, fan-favourite Sonic counter-part, Shadow, became a main character. Now in Sonic 4, fans can look forward to the introduction of Metal Sonic.
As confirmed by director Jeff Fowler, Sonic 4 has wrapped filming as well, putting the movie on track to hit its March 2027 release date. Sonic 4 will also have the most star-studded cast of the films so far, including the returns of Ben Schwarts as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Idris Elba as Knuckles and Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog. Actors like Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman and Matt Berry also have roles in the new film.
Metal Sonic is an iconic character in the videogame series, having appeared as far back as Sonic CD. He is yet another creation of Dr. Robotnik's, built with the sole purpose of taking down Sonic.
Unfortunately, this likely means that we won't be getting to Sonic Adventure's ‘Chaos' storyline in the movies anytime soon.
KitGuru Says: Part of me is a little surprised we didn't see Metal Sonic sooner but with that said, Paramount is also pumping out these films at an impressively fast rate. If Sonic 4 does well enough to warrant a sequel, which villain would you like to see step in next?
