CD Projekt Red will scale up team working on Witcher 4 after Phantom Liberty launches

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is finally set to launch in September, over 2 and a half years on from the initial release of the base game. This will be Cyberpunk 2077's only expansion, as CD Projekt Red is looking to leave its RED Engine tech behind and move all future projects to Unreal Engine 5. Once Phantom Liberty launches, a large chunk of the Cyberpunk team will be moving on to the next Witcher game.

CD Projekt Red announced a new Witcher trilogy last year, as well as a new partnership with Epic Games to use Unreal Engine 5 for these new games. Phantom Liberty has had resource priority for a while now, but with the expansion coming out in a few weeks' time, CD Projekt Red is planning to shuffle developers around to beef up the team working on the next Witcher game.

The new Witcher RPG entered pre-production last year and since then, the team working on it has grown to over 250 developers. Once Phantom Liberty ships, the majority of that team will also be moving on to The Witcher. The new game, codenamed ‘Polaris' does not have a release date yet and even though the team is scaling up, that doesn't mean the game will come out any faster.

While CD Projekt Red wants to release games more frequently, following Cyberpunk 2077, the company also needs to ensure it doesn't overwork its employees and spend more time checking for bugs to avoid another launch-day disaster. With that in mind, I'd still expect the next Witcher title to be around four to five years away at least.

KitGuru Says: The Witcher universe is now beloved by millions around the world. A new game in The Witcher series will certainly be a big deal, so I hope CD Projekt Red takes the time to get it right.
