EA is cutting hundreds of jobs as part of ‘restructuring’

A number of game publishers have made cuts in the early months of this year. Microsoft let go of many employees from across Xbox, Take-Two recently announced a round of layoffs and now, EA is joining the list with plans to cut around 750 positions.

EA is cutting roughly six percent of its workforce, which could be anywhere from 750 to 800 workers. According to a public letter penned by CEO, Andrew Wilson, EA is “restructuring” in an effort to “drive greater focus across our portfolio”.

The letter starts off by saying that EA is “operating from a position of strength”, which is always an odd way to start a letter announcing hundreds of firings. The letter goes on to say: “As we drive greater focus across our portfolio, we are moving away from projects that do not contribute to our strategy, reviewing our real estate footprint, and restructuring some of our teams. These decisions are expected to impact approximately six percent of our company’s workforce.”

Some employees will get the opportunity to move to other projects, while others will be let go, but all those impacted will get severance pay, continued health care insurance and access to EA's career transition service.
