Star Ocean: The Second Story Remake is coming to Switch and PlayStation this year

Earlier this month, the Square Enix website hinted at an upcoming Star Ocean announcement, indicating a new remake on the way. Yesterday during Nintendo Direct, Star Ocean: The Second Story R was officially revealed.

This remake follows on from 2019's Star Ocean: First Departure R, which came out on Switch and PS4. The story will be similar for Star Ocean: The Second Story R, which will release on Switch, PS4 and PS5 this November.

As you can see in the trailer, Square Enix is trying a new variation of its HD-2D graphics system, adding in more 3D elements. The new art style for pixel-based games continues to look fantastic and is my personal favourite style for remakes of classic games and newly-made RPGs looking to capture that same old-school feel.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R follows the story of Claude, stranded on an undeveloped planet. You'll be able to play through the game as either Claude or Rena, seeing events unfold from both of their points of view.
