Nintendo confirms its next console will be backwards compatible with Switch

While it has long been rumoured that the next Nintendo console will feature backwards compatibility with Switch titles, there has been no official confirmation. That changed this week, with Nintendo slowly opening up about its next-gen console plans. 

As Nintendo had to cut the Switch sales forecast, investors are keen to get more information on Nintendo's next big hardware launch, due in 2025. Nintendo already confirmed that its next console will be ‘an evolution' of the Switch concept, and that the new system will be announced during the current fiscal year, which ends March 31st 2025.

As part of this week's earnings call with investors, Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, confirmed that “Nintendo Switch software will also be playable the successor to Nintendo Switch”.

Again, Nintendo has only confirmed very surface level details about its next-generation console. However, we know enough at this stage to confidently refer to the system as the Switch 2, even if Nintendo ultimately decides on a new name.

KitGuru Says: As someone with a pretty big Switch digital library, I'm happy to see that those games will continue to run on Nintendo's next system. Hopefully, those games will also run at better frame rates on the new console too.
