Friday the 13th update unlocks all content for players ahead of shutdown

The developers behind Friday the 13th announced plans to shut down the game all the way back in 2020. Unfortunately due to licensing issues, the game can't remain online and on sale forever. The game is getting one final content-unlocking update this week as a final send-off. 

In an update tomorrow, Friday the 13th players will get access to all the content the game has to offer without the need to grind. All players will be boosted to maximum level with all unlocks awarded to their accounts. This means for the final portion of the game's life, players can dive right in and play with all of the best perks available. Matches will no longer award any XP.

By doing this, publisher Gun Interactive hopes to reduce dependence on database servers as the game continues to wind down. As of the 31st of December 2023, the Friday the 13th license will expire and the game will no longer be available via digital storefronts. Until then, the game will be available for $5 and each DLC will be dropped to $1 on digital stores.

While the game will no longer be available to purchase, those who already own the game will be able to continue joining player-hosted matches, so whatever life the game has left will be entirely community driven.

KitGuru Says: While Friday the 13th is going away, a similar asymmetrical multiplayer title based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is due to release later this year. Beyond that, games like Dead by Daylight continue to thrive to this day.
