The Crew series surpasses 40 million players

Many publishers have their own car racing franchise. PlayStation has Gran Turismo, Xbox has Forza and Ubisoft has The Crew – an interesting take on the genre focused on keeping the action moving at all times through a rather cool vehicle switching mechanic. As we await for more news on the recently-announced The Crew Motorfest, Ubisoft has revealed that the first two games have in total reached more than 40 million players.

Making the announcement on their Twitter, Stephane Beley – the Creative Director at Ubisoft Ivory Tower – said “15 years ago a group of friends dreamed of creating their own driving game. Ubisoft trusted them. Ivory gave birth to #TheCrew. 15 years later 40 million players have joined the adventure. Soon it will continues with The Crew MotorFest. Always believe in your dreams! Thank you all.”

This is of course a major achievement for any series, and so hitting a milestone figure such as this is indeed worthy of celebration. That said, it is worth noting that 40 million players does not equate to 40 million copies sold.

For years now, Ubisoft has opted to focus more on the total number of players who have tried their games as opposed to direct game sales. That means the 40 million could include those who played through subscription services or even on free weekends.

Regardless of how it got there, 40 million is still an impressive number, and bodes well for the 3rd entry in the franchise – The Crew Motorfest which is set to come out some time this year.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
