Kojima will not direct the Death Stranding film – but he’s heavily involved

One of Hideo Kojima’s goals with the creation of Kojima Productions was to eventually expand beyond gaming and into other mediums such as films and TV. This wish seems to have come true with the announcement that a Death Stranding film is on the way. Details were light at the time, though we now know the extent of Kojima’s personal involvement with the project.

In a Tweet shared to his followers online, Hideo Kojima offered some details on the upcoming Death Stranding film, saying “Just to be clear, I am deeply involved in producing, supervising, plotting, look, design and content of the film adaptation of DS, just not in charge of directing.”

The Death Stranding film is being developed by Kojima Productions in collaboration with Hammerstone Studios (known for Bill & Ted Face the Music, Kung Fury, Barbarian and more) and while no plot details have been shared so far, it was confirmed that the film will “introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe.”

Kojima previously spoke on the project, saying at the time “I’m taking the approach of changing and evolving the world of Death Stranding in a way that suits film well. I made Death Stranding to be a game, and games are games. There's no real need to turn them into films. So in a way, the Death Stranding movie is taking a direction that nobody has tried before with a movie adaptation of a game. I think that what I need to make is something that will inspire some of the people who watch it to become creators 10 or 20 years down the line.”

There’s no denying that Kojima has a unique directing style which could be absent from the film. That said, considering how involved the creator seems to be in all other respects, hopefully Kojima’s vision is able to be accurately translated to the Silver Screen.
