Nvidia’s Shield Tablet won’t be getting the Android Oreo update

The Nvidia Shield tablet has had a long life at this point. Both the original 2014 tablet and the updated K1 from 2015 went on to become highly regarded in the Android tablet space and received plenty of timely updates but it is time to put them to rest.

This week, it was announced that the Nvidia Shield Tablet (2014) and the Shield K1  Tablet (2015) won't be receiving the Android Oreo update. The news was shared by Manuel Guzman, a Software QA at Nvidia on Twitter.

According to Guzman, the K1 will receive one more update based on Android N but a full upgrade to Android Oreo is not planned for either version of the Shield tablet. Whether or not Nvidia will release a new Shield Tablet remains to be seen.

We do know that Nvidia has been experimenting with other Shield launches behind the scenes but so far, nothing has come to fruition. Just a few weeks ago, a Shield Portable 2 prototype appeared in the wild but aside from that, there has been little news.

KitGuru Says: The Shield Tablet served as a good platform to launch Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming service. Personally, I'd like to see a second Shield tablet but it seems the Shield TV is getting the biggest push for now. Do any of you own a Shield Tablet? Would you like to see an upgraded version?
