Nikon use Android on Coolpix S800c

Nikon are creating some ripples in the photographic sector by announcing their latest Coolpix S800C camera. It is the first time we have seen a major camera company using Android as the operating system, although it was only a matter of time.

Their new Coolpix S800c features Android 2.3 Gingerbread as the operating system of choice.

The S800c features a 1/2.3 inch 16 megapixel backside illuminated CMOS sensor, the Nikon C2 processing engine and a 10x f3 2.5 8 25-250mm lens with optical image stabilisation. They have also included a high quality 3.5 inch 819k OLED touch screen.

The camera also has built in Wifi to connect to your home network to surf the web (on a camera, really?). Google Play store is also supported for those who want to shop via their camera. You can even play games via the 3.5 inch touch screen.

We looked over the specifications which were emailed to us today and the battery life is only rated for 140 shots, which seems a victim of all the cool features Nikon are incorporating into the camera. A spare battery might be needed for long trips away from home.

UK price hasn't been announced, but it is due for release in September at $350.
