Job cuts hit two first-party Meta VR game studios

Ready at Dawn became part of Oculus Studios back in 2020, officially joining Meta to work full-time on VR and AR games. Unfortunately, Meta's AR division has been extremely costly to run and layoffs are beginning to hit. According to reports this week, Ready at Dawn has been heavily impacted by this.

Ready at Dawn is best known for The Order 1866 on PS4, and VR hits like Lone Echo. Meta acquired the company back in 2020, but a third of the studio has now been laid off, according to a report from The Washington Post. Apparently, a number of “highly skilled” members of the team were let go during this process.

Another VR games studio at Meta, Downpour Interactive, the studio best known for VR shooter, Onward, has also been impacted by layoffs.

While Meta has owned a number of studios over the years to produce first-party content for VR headsets, Meta's output has been pretty slow.

KitGuru Says: John Carmack recently left Meta and made his issues with the company's direction and management known on his way out. Currently, Meta is said to be preparing for the launch of the Meta Quest 3 VR headset later this year, but news of layoffs at two first-party game studios doesn't inspire confidence in the potential launch lineup of software.
