Super Meat Boy returns, this time in 3D

Super Meat Boy first released over 15 years ago and became an instant hit through the Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox 360. Now, the gore-filled platformer is making a grand return, this time in 3D.

Super Meat Boy 3D was officially announced last night during the Xbox Games Showcase. The original 2D platformer became a hit due to its tight controls, punishing difficulty and instant respawn system. Now, players get to run through the gauntlet once again, but this time in full 3D.

It is rare to see a 3D platformer with the same level of quality as a Super Mario game, but Super Meat Boy 3D looks to check all of the right boxes to achieve exactly that. Unlike the original game's 2D side-scrolling layout, the 3D version allows for more verticality and multi-layered levels, giving players multiple routes and enhancing replay value, especially for speed runners.

Sometimes the transition from 2D to 3D can be a tricky one to pull off as far as art is concerned, but the transition here looks as perfect as one could expect. For the first time in the series, players will also be challenged by new mini-bosses and large-scale battles, adding more complexity to the game overall.

Super Meat Boy 3D will be releasing in ‘early 2026' for PC, PS5 and Xbox. On the Xbox side of things, the game will be a day-one release for Game Pass.
