Sonic Frontiers will get 3 waves of free DLC including new playable characters

Sonic Frontiers has proven to be quite the commercial success for SEGA, with the new direction taken by Sonic Team seemingly resonating with fans of the Blue Blur. In a surprise announcement, SEGA revealed that Sonic Frontiers would be getting multiple sets of free DLC – including new playable characters.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog page said “New modes, new Koco, new…playable characters!? More Sonic Frontiers content coming your way next year! All free btw.”

Going into greater depth, Sonic Frontiers will receive 3 waves of free DLC over the course of 2023. The first wave will bring with it a jukebox; a photo mode and new level Challenges.

The second wave of DLC will add new challenges to the open world, will introduce new Koco for you to find, and will celebrate Sonic’s birthday – though SEGA did not say how exactly.

Finally, the 3rd piece of DLC is by far the biggest, with the free update set to bring multiple new playable characters into the game. From the roadmap released, it seems as though the playable characters will at least include Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, and Miles ‘Tails’ Prower. Additionally, this 3rd DLC will also add new story content – though the extent to this is currently unknown.

SEGA has in the past locked core features such as Super Sonic behind a paywall and as such, it is exciting and encouraging to see them offering so much for free.

I've completed my first playthrough of the game and while I do want to play another character and make a few different choices, I'm not sure Obsidian has done enough to address the first game's problems.
