Aspyr says it has more LOTR remasters on the way following War in the North

Aspyr’s surprise remaster of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North appears to be just the beginning. In its press release announcing the newly released Legacy Edition, which arrived earlier this week, the studio confirmed that more classic LOTR titles are now in the pipeline for modern platforms.

In the announcement, Aspyr said: “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr. Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!” This essentially confirms that Aspyr will be working on more LOTR remasters moving forward, which should be great news, as Aspyr has done very well with its revivals of classic games in the Star Wars, Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain franchises.

With War in the North now back on all major platforms, speculation naturally turns to what Aspyr might tackle next. There are several classic LOTR games that fans have been hoping to see return for years. The Return of the King game remains one of the most fondly remembered movie tie‑ins of its era, and titles like LOTR: The Third Age and LOTR: Conquest would also be strong candidates for modern remasters.

For me personally, the biggest hope would be a revival of the Battle for Middle‑earth series. These now‑forgotten RTS games captured the LOTR flavour brilliantly, allowing players to build armies based on factions like Rohan, Gondor, Mordor and more, and wage large‑scale battles with legendary heroes (or villains) leading the charge. Being able to call in an army of Great Eagles, or summon in a Balrog, was an unforgettable experience back in the day and strong sales of a Battle for Middle Earth remaster could help move the needle towards a Battle for Middle Earth 3.
