Blizzard’s Battlenet platform may have a big role in Xbox PC plans

It would seem that Microsoft has more plans in place to grow its PC gaming presence. It turns out Microsoft may be working with Blizzard to open up the Battle net platform to third-party developers in the future.

According to Windows Central's Jez Corden, citing “multiple trusted sources”, Blizzard and Microsoft had been planning to open the Battle.net platform up before the Xbox leadership shake-up earlier this year. However, he hasn't heard anything to suggest that those plans were cancelled.

Battle.net is already a strong platform in its own right, being the main gateway to World of Warcraft and hosting hundreds of millions of active users. Over time, many non-Blizzard titles have landed on Battle.net, including Destiny 2 for a period of time, as well as several Call of Duty titles, and in more recent years, Xbox titles like Avowed have been made available through the platform.

While Microsoft did recently undergo a series of cuts at Xbox, these included a number of studio divestments, while other resources were shifted to critical game franchises. One of the continued areas of investment under the new Xbox CEO is going to be the PC platform, as we saw recently with the Backwards Compatible PC launch.
