It is no secret that Monster Hunter Wilds had an extremely rough launch, with the PC version suffering the most, leading to waves of negative reviews for the game during its first year on the market. Since then, Capcom has released several updates to improve performance and now, they've even managed to get the game running well on handheld hardware.
Monster Hunter Wilds is now coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, but the road to this port was not an easy one. In an interview with Kotaku, Capcom producer, Genki Sunano, said that getting the game running on Nintendo's latest console was a “painstaking process”.
“It was this painstaking, and at times seemingly endless, process of making decisions and optimisations one by one that proved to be one of our biggest challenges in delivering a comfortable handheld experience while preserving what makes Wilds feel like Wilds”, Sunano said. “The result seems to be agreeable, at least: the game runs at a solid 30FPS in handheld mode, even when running taxing multiplayer hunts.”
It isn't exactly surprising to hear that getting the game running well on the Switch 2 was difficult. Even PC gamers with high-end hardware struggled with the game when it first launched. Perhaps if more optimisation work had taken place before release, the process of porting it to the Switch 2 wouldn't have been so long and difficult.
At any rate, Monster Hunter Wilds is now in a good place, and performs much better than it did during its launch window. The game will land on Switch 2 in December, followed by a major expansion, titled “Ascendance” in 2027.
