CDPR reportedly downsizes Witcher Project Sirius team

CD Projekt Red is making further changes to its multiplayer Witcher project, known internally as Project Sirius. According to a new report, the studio has shifted resources once again, resulting in a fresh round of layoffs for the team working on the game.

According to sources speaking with Kotaku, Project Sirius is losing around 18 developers, with nine reassigned to other CDPR projects and nine departing the company entirely. While CDPR has not commented on this report publicly yet, it is believed that Project Sirius will remain in development and won't be cancelled.

Project Sirius has been in development since 2022 and has faced some turbulence along the way, including a reboot in 2023, which included its own round of layoffs. Since 2023, the Project Sirius team has grown once again, with CDPR's late 2025 roadmap update indicating that around 50 developers were now working on the game. That number is now going to be smaller if Kotaku's report is accurate.

Project Sirius is CD Projekt Red's latest attempt at cracking the multiplayer games market. Previously, CDPR had tried its hand at a standalone version of GWENT, which is no longer in active development. There was also a planned multiplayer component for Cyberpunk 2077, but that had to be scrapped after the single-player game's disastrous launch in 2020.

There are still questions around how well a co‑op Witcher game might resonate compared to something set in the Cyberpunk universe, which naturally lends itself to multiplayer systems. We know very little about the game officially, but a Monster Hunter-style game would work well and would be very fitting for The Witcher universe. Other approaches may struggle to feel authentic.
