Nintendo finally brings Super Mario Sunshine to Switch 2

Nintendo has finally announced that Super Mario Sunshine is joining the Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Classics collection on Switch 2. The title was originally confirmed for the service well over a year ago, making this one of the slowest additions from the first wave of announced GameCube games.

Super Mario Sunshine is one of the most important entries in the Mario franchise, serving as the second 3D platformer following Super Mario 64. The game was a major hit during the GameCube era and remains a fan favourite thanks to its unique setting and mechanics – although its camera controls can be a bit of a hassle.

With Sunshine now available, Nintendo has nearly completed the rollout of the initial GameCube line‑up announced last year. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Soul Calibur 2, Luigi’s Mansion and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness have all made their way to the service already. However, one major title from that original list is still missing – Pokémon Colosseum. Presumably, that game will be arriving before the end of the year, but with how slow the rollout has been thus far, it could quite easily slip into 2027.

Once the first wave is fully complete, it will be interesting to see whether Nintendo has additional GameCube titles planned for future updates to the Switch Online library.

While the GameCube collection for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers is only available on the Switch 2 console, fans can actually play Super Mario Sunshine on the original Switch console – you just need to find yourself a copy of Super Mario 3D All Stars, which had a limited-time release and is now only available through the second-hand market.
