Subnautica is now a key franchise for Krafton thanks to continued strong sales

Subnautica 2 has enjoyed a very strong launch period, with publisher Krafton confirming that the game surpassed 5 million copies sold just a few weeks after release. The game’s early success has helped drive record‑setting Q2 financial results for Krafton, which now plans to invest further into the IP and position Subnautica as one of its key franchises.

First spotted by Eurogamer, Krafton revealed in its Q2 2026 earnings report that Subnautica 2 hit the 5 million sales milestone after just a few weeks on the market. On top of that, during the first half of the fiscal year, the Subnautica series, including the original game and its expansion, Below Zero, generated around £120 million in revenue.

Due to the success of Subnautica as a whole this year, Krafton says it now has plans to invest further into turning the series into a “franchise IP”, so expect further expansions and sequels well into the future. For now though, Subnautica 2 needs to finish development, as the game is still in early access at the moment.

There is no timeline for the full V1.0 version of Subnautica 2 yet, but these things typically last a year or two. When the game is ready for its full release, we expect to also see support expanded to other consoles, like PS5 and the Switch 2.

KitGuru Says: Subnautica 2’s early momentum is impressive, and with the legal issues now behind the studio, Unknown Worlds can focus fully on development. Have you tried Subnautica 2 since its early access launch?
