Arc System Works has made a name for itself in the fighting game space thanks to the studio’s consistent cadence of high quality releases, utilising both its own original IP as well as licensed franchises such as Dragon Ball FighterZ and most recently Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. While they continue to work on updates and DLC for the aforementioned Tokon, Arc System Works have confirmed that they are currently developing “a brand-new fighting game IP utilizing the signature ArcSys cel-shaded anime style.”
In a report by the Japanese publication GameBiz (translated by Automaton Media), Arc System Works are said to have had a strong fiscal year, returning to profitability following its previous deficit.
For our purposes, the far more interesting news came with the announcement that the team are planning “to develop a brand-new fighting game IP utilizing the signature ArcSys cel-shaded anime style” – though no further details have been shared at this time aside from the fact that it will be a multiplatform project.
Since the studio’s founding back in 1988, Arc System Works have created a number of original IPs; with the two most popular being BlazBlue and Guilty Gear (the latter of which has spawned half a dozen sequels and plenty of spin-offs).
Given this, it perhaps makes sense that the team would want to branch out and flex their creative muscles. That said, developing a brand new IP – and a fighting game at that – is no small feat, and so it will be interesting to see what direction they choose to take.
If nothing else, we at least know that the project will feature ArcSys’ crisp and slick 2D artstyle; a style which they have pretty much perfected at this point.
