German Pirate Party flies drone into election rally

In what must be seen as an attempt to draw attention to the local branch of the Pirate Party and to highlight problems with invasions of privacy, a German election rally for chancellor Angela Merkel, was interrupted when an unmanned drone was flown within metres of her campaign podium during an election rally.

The 23 year old Pirate Party member behind the stunt, flew the drone across the crowd at the Christian Democratic Union where the rally was taking place, in-front of the chancellor, who raised a wry smile. Ultimately the drone crash landed shortly after arrival when police questioned and temporarily detained the man responsible.

Germany's Pirate Party has claimed responsibility for the stunt: “The objective of the mission was to convey to the Chancellor and Minister of Defence Thomas de Maizière what it’s like to be suddenly observed from a drone,” said Markus Barenhoff, vice chairman of the German Pirate Party (via TorrentFreak).

PP Germany also wanted to draw attention to plans for drone usage in general spying of the European populace and a scrapped drone surveillance project that cost the German tax payer as much as half a billion euros.

Kitguru Says: I can't see this doing much beyond drawing a bit of attention to the Pirate Party, but it does perhaps highlight security concerns with unmanned drones as well. What do you guys think?
