Kim Dotcom pledges to sponsor NZ yacht team

New Zealand recently lost out to Oracle Team USA in the America's Cup in what was a very close run race, but that hasn't stopped New Zealand prime minister, John Key, suggesting that there may not be enough money for another campaign run in the future. Abhorred by this idea, Kim Dotcom, founder of Megaupload and MEGA, has come forward and said that his company will sponsor any future efforts, hoping to win back the Auld cup in 2017.

Soon after Mr Key's announcement, Dotcom tweeted the following: “Prime Minister John Key says no more funding for Team NZ? I say #Mega will become a Team NZ sponsor & we will win next time. #AmericasCup.”

Commenters urged him to put forward any potential funding as soon as possible, in order to keep the current team of sailing enthusiasts together. Others have suggested however, that he may not be ready to commit the necessary money, since a lot of his funds are tied up in legal action and his looming extradition hearing which could see him deported to the USA to face copyright infringement and money laundering charges.

However, Dotcom also spoke with OneNews about the potential investment and said he was serious about saving the team and would commit millions of NZ dollars to if it necessary. He did admit that he hadn't been in contact with anyone from the team, but declared it a brand he'd be happy to associate with.

The question now, is whether Team NZ wants to associate with Dotcom.
