Playdead’s next game will use Unreal Engine 5

Ever since Unreal Engine 5 was first announced, we have seen a wide number of different game studios all pledging to use Epic Games’ engine for their future titles. It seems Playdead – the studio known best for the indie hits LIMBO and INSIDE will be using UE5 for their next game.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘deadlygantz’, Danish indie studio Playdead recently posted a job listing for an ‘Experienced Landscape Artist’, where they stated that “Your main responsibilities will be to oversee the production pipeline for the Landscape, work closely with the art department to visually deliver the art style and meet technical performance requirements in Unreal Engine 5.”

This listing all but confirms that the team’s next game (known as Project Rover) will utilise Unreal Engine 5. This is interesting to see, as Playdead has in the past used vastly different tools for their work, with LIMBO being built on a custom engine, and INSIDE utilising Unity.

Unlike these two titles however (which were side-scrolling puzzle platformers), the upcoming Project Rover is said to be an open-world, third-person sci-fi experience, and so perhaps is the reason for this change. Regardless, Playdead’s next game has been long in development, and so hopefully we get to see an official and proper reveal soon.
