Grand Theft Auto 6 is launching later this year, but only for current-generation consoles like the Xbox Series X/S and PS5. A PC version is expected to arrive eventually, but according to Take-Two CEO, Stauss Zelnick, PC players aren't necessarily the ‘core audience.
In an interview with Bloomberg published this week, Zelnick said: “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you're judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn't there, if they're not served first and best, you kind of don't hit your other consumers.”
Zelnick isn't entirely wrong, the console market has been hugely lucrative for Rockstar over the decades and thanks to the GTA Online, that disparity between PC and console revenue has only grown. In a recent leak we learned that GTA Online was still bringing in over $500M per year in microtransaction sales, but the vast majority of that income was generated on console, with PC players engaging with things like Shark Cards less.
With that said, Rockstar games do still sell millions of copies on the PC platform and for many, PC is the definitive way to play modes like GTA Online. That sure sounds like core audience material to me.
KitGuru Says: How long do you think we'll be waiting before GTA 6 comes to PC? Considering the size of the game, I have a feeling that it could end up taking multiple years.
