Terraria celebrates 15th anniversary as the game surpasses 70 million copies sold

Terraria is not only one of the biggest indie games of all time, but also represents one of the best-selling games in history – nestled in between The Witcher 3 and PUBG with over 70 million copies sold. Celebrating the game’s 15th anniversary, the team at Re-Logic have shared a ton of interesting stats / player data.

Taking to their Steam page to celebrate the milestone, the team at Re-Logic wrote: “Fifteen Years?! That is a long time indeed! That's 131,400 hours – which quite a few of you have chosen to spend with our humble game. To say that reaching this milestone is equal parts insane and humbling is a massive understatement.”

They continued, “Your support allows us to keep going, keep expanding upon Terraria, without having to fall back to price increases or microtransactions. This is becoming increasingly rare in modern gaming, and we cannot thank you enough for making what we do every day possible.”

With that, the team shared a bunch of interesting data pertaining to Terraria from the past decade and half. While it was already known that the game has sold over 70 million copies, Re-Logic revealed that 39.6 million came from PC, 19.7 million on mobile and 10.7 million on consoles.

Amongst all 70 million players, the average total hours played (on PC) exceeds 101 hours – not bad for a game which costs less than a tenner. Furthermore, despite its age, the game remains as popular as ever, with the past year seeing an average daily player count of 461,000; peaking at 1.4 million.

15 years on and Terraria is still seeing improvements, with the team teasing that the next major update will introduce crossplay support – adding that “Terraria Updates will continue beyond 1.4.6/Crossplay.”

The team concluded by stating: “we have other plans and ideas that we will share when the time is right, but suffice to say that the world of Terraria remains and will remain vibrant and alive for as long as we have anything to say about it! Here's to 15 more years… and beyond!”
