Switch 2 update finally brings Variable Refresh Rate to Docked Mode

Nintendo has rolled out a new Switch 2 system update, and this one finally unlocks Variable Refresh Rate support while using the console in docked mode. Previously, VRR was limited to the handheld display, despite the Switch 2 supporting 120Hz output.

With the new V23.0 OS update, Switch 2 owners will now find a “VRR Output” toggle in the settings menu. Switching this on enables Variable Refresh Rate when the console is connected to a compatible TV or monitor, bringing the feature in line with what PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have offered for years.

VRR has been a staple on PC for a long time, allowing the GPU to dynamically match the display’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate. This eliminates screen tearing and helps smooth out performance dips in demanding scenes. Modern TVs and monitors almost all support VRR, so it was surprising to see the Switch 2 limit the feature to handheld mode at launch.

There are plenty of 60FPS titles on the Switch 2 that can benefit from VRR, especially during heavier moments where frame rates fluctuate. A handful of games, Like Metroid Prime 4, also run at up to 120FPS, which is where VRR really shines.

KitGuru Says: VRR was one of the Switch 2’s standout modern features, so it’s good to see Nintendo expand it beyond handheld mode. If you’ve got a compatible TV or monitor, this update is well worth switching on.
