Ninja Theory undergoes layoffs amid potential closure

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced plans to split off several of its studios, including Undead Labs, Double Fine, Compulsion Games and Ninja Theory. While most of the studios on that list have managed to find new homes, two deals for Ninja Theory fell through. As a result, the studio is now approaching closure.

VGC reports that Ninja Theory has undergone a round of layoffs, including designers, artists and technical-focused roles. The job cuts come following a consultation period that may end with Ninja Theory closing down for good.

Ninja Theory had just one known project in the works, Senua, a new game set in the Hellblade universe with a greater focus on combat, rather than storytelling. The game was announced earlier this summer as part of the Xbox Games Showcase, but we quickly learned that this announcement was primarily made to attract potential buyers for the studio.

At this stage, it seems unlikely that Senua will get to be finished or released, as previous attempts to find a buyer for the studio and the project have fallen through. Ninja Theory hasn't been shut down completely yet, but with layoffs now beginning, it would appear that the studio's operations are now starting to wind down.

KitGuru Says: Do you think Senua would have been a success if given the chance to be completed and released?
