Philips create 20 year life LED light bulb

Dutch Electronics company Philips are launching an LED light bulb which lasts for 20 years. The bulb uses LED to give the product a very long life span, although it does push the price up to £37.

The pricing is the main concern and Philips are preempting this by offering discounts with some shops which could drop the price down to £12.

The BBC reported yesterday that the bulb was highlighted in the Bright Tomorrow competition run by the US Department of Energy which wanted to find an energy efficient alternative to the 60 watt incandescent light bulb.

The challenge set by the DOE was to create a bulb which gave out a warm light, similar to that from a traditional bulb, while being more energy efficient. Philips were the sole entrant, taking 18 months of design and testing to come up with the award winning design. They are already selling a cheaper and less efficient version of the LED bulb in the US and Europe.

The BBC add “Production of 100 watt bulbs has ceased in the US and Europe. Production of 60 watt bulbs has been stopped in Europe and is being phased out in the US. From 2014, incandescent bulbs of 40 watts or above will be banned in the US.”

Kitguru says: 20 year life span? Seems like quite a deal when you factor that in!
