Windows 11 will soon get better support for high refresh multi-monitor setups

The next Windows 11 update will be a welcome one for those using multiple high refresh rate monitors. Currently, multi monitor setups can pose certain challenges, but a new update that enables automatic refresh rate adjustments per monitor should clean up a number of bugs.

In a recent Windows Insider blog, Microsoft says it has “improved refresh rate logic to allow different refresh rates on different monitors”. The refresh rate will adjust based on the content shown on each display. If you’ve ever tried playing a game on one high refresh monitor and then watch a video on the second screen, then you may have noticed choppiness and odd refresh rate behaviour. This update should fix exactly that.

As The Verge points out, this could also help those using Nvidia’s RTX 30 or RTX 40 Founders Edition graphics cards, as it means these graphics cards should now be able to use Zero RPM mode reliably when using multiple monitors running at high refresh rates.

Dynamic Refresh Rate improvements are also coming to Windows 11 laptops to help aid battery life when using the battery saver power profile. Both changes are currently in public testing through the Windows Insider Canary channel and should roll out to all users, including non-Insider members, before the end of the year.
