  • Processor Technology for CPU Cores: TSMC 7nm FinFET

The short take on Ryzen 5 5600X3D is that it is a six-core version of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D we reviewed HERE. This means it has six cores, rather than eight, and has the enormous 96MB slab of L3 cache that gives a huge boost to gaming performance.

The twin curiosities with the Ryzen 5 5600X3D are the timing of the launch of this Zen 3 part, almost a year after the arrival of Zen 4 Ryzen 7000, and also the fact that you can only buy this CPU in-store at Micro Center in the USA.

Testing and Performance: CPU

To test the Ryzen 5 5600X3D we used two test platforms as shown in our video and detailed below.

Processors: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D, Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X3D
CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite LCD
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Aorus Master
Memory: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 C16
Graphics card: Gigabyte RTX 4080 16GB
Power supply: Seasonic Prime PX-1600 ATX 3.0
SSD: PNY CS3140 M.2 NVMe
OS: Windows 11

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i Elite LCD
Motherboard: Gigabyte X670 Aorus Elite
Memory: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo DDR5-6000 C30
Graphics card: Gigabyte RTX 4080 16GB
Power supply: Seasonic Prime PX-1600 ATX 3.0
SSD: Sabrent Rocket 4.0 M.2 NVMe
OS: Windows 11

We also took test data for other CPUs such as the Intel Core i5-13600K from our recent review of the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D that you can see HERE.

Cinebench R23 Multi Core

In Cinebench R23 Multi Core the Ryzen 5 5600X3D sits at the bottom of the chart. This will be a recurring theme in our CPU tests, although things improve when we move on to gaming.

Power Consumption in Cinebench R23

Power Consumption for the Ryzen 5 5600X3D is surprisingly high in Cinebench R23 and comes in 20W higher than the regular Ryzen 5 5600X. It is hard to believe that 96MB of cache requires so much power, which leads us to believe the silicon in this CPU is of questionable quality.

CPU Temperature

We use a 360mm Corsair AIO on our test bench that has no difficulty keeping the Ryzen 5 5600X and 5600X3D under control, however it is interesting to note the difference in temperature between these two CPUs.

Cinebench R23 Single Core

In Cinebench R23 Single Core the Ryzen 5 5600X3D chugs along at 4.34GHz down at the bottom of our chart.

Testing and Performance: Gaming

Borderlands 3 at 1440p

We kick off our games testing with Borderlands 3 at 1440p and the Ryzen 5 5600X3D jumps up the chart with some impressive results.

Borderlands 3 at 1080p

Borderlands 3 at 1080p also shows the Ryzen 5 5600X3D performing well with a delta of 34fps over the regular 5600X.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at 1440p

In Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at 1440p we see the Ryzen 5 5600X3D running very close the the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is a superb result.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at 1080p

And in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy at 1080p we see the same stellar result from the Ryzen 5 5600X3D so you might just as well play in 1440p.

Testing and Performance: Gaming 2

Far Cry 6 at 1440p

Far Cry 6 at 1440p also shows the Ryzen 5 5600X3D performing well however it is worth noting the 1% low falls quite some way behind the average.

Far Cry 6 at 1080p

In Far Cry 6 at 1080p we see a grouping  of CPUs in the middle of the chart with the Ryzen 5 5600X3D performing well.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p

Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1440p is a real eye opener as the 5600X3D leaps forward in a massive way over the 5600X. The average frame rate surges by 80fps and the 1% low by nearly 50fps.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p

We finish with Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p which runs at pretty much the same speed as 1440p, thanks to the mighty RTX 4080 graphics. The CPU handles the job very well and you would have no reason to play at 1080p when 1440p works so well.

AMD's approach of selling the Ryzen 5 5600X3D through Micro Center mucks up our review as we, as a UK-based outfit, cannot really offer buying advice. Our sample ended up costing more than a Ryzen 7 5800X3D after shipping and import duty, and that makes no financial sense, however the technical aspects are very interesting.

It is clear the extra 64MB of L3 cache boosts gaming performance to an impressive extent, so while the underlying Ryzen 5 5600X is a mediocre CPU this stacked Ryzen 5 5600X3D tears through games at an impressive rate.

The broader point with Ryzen 5 5600X3D is that AMD has shown you can extend the life of your AM4 PC with a relatively modest upgrade. This clearly works best if you have a Ryzen 3000 or perhaps an even older CPU. There is no doubt you will get much better performance if you move to Zen 4 and AM5, however that brings considerable extra cost and this unusual Micro Center special is all about value and a cheap upgrade.

The 5600X3D is listed on Micro Center for $229 HERE. For UK consumers, the 5800X3D is listed on Amazon for £272 HERE.
