Updated: A Game of Thrones MMORPG is reportedly in development

UPDATE: Nexon has since confirmed that it is not developing a Game of Thrones title. It is now believed that the report that appeared earlier this week had misinterpreted information about an upcoming GoT game from Net Marble, which is destined for mobile devices and not consoles/PC.

Despite the popularity of the Game of Thrones novels and TV series, we've never had a great game in the series. That may finally change, as reports claim that a new Game of Thrones game is now in development.

Redanian Intelligence, a site dedicated to news on The Witcher, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and other fantasy franchises, claims to have learned that a Game of Thrones MMORPG is in development. It would seem that Nexon, the publisher behind games like The Finals, Maple Story and many others, is working on the game.

The game will reportedly be set in ‘the North', with Winterfell and The Wall both set to feature in the game. The report also claims that the MMO will be set between the TV series' fourth and fifth seasons, so Jon Snow and Sam Tarly still stationed on The Wall. However, the original cast from the show will not be returning to voice characters in the game, so don't go in expecting everything to look and sound exactly like the TV show.

As this is an MMO, there will no doubt be a bunch of monetisation baked in. The plan for the game has been likened to The Elder Scrolls Online, which has made over $2 billion over the past 10 years.

This wouldn't be the first time that a Game of Thrones MMO has been attempted, but earlier projects were ultimately cancelled. We'll have to wait and see if this one can be pushed through to release.

KitGuru Says: An MMO wouldn't be my first choice of genre for a Game of Thrones title. A single-player RPG would undoubtedly sell well if handled correctly. However, in an age where games need long-term monetisation plans in order to accrue investment from publishers, it makes sense to have this be an online multiplayer game, as it opens the door for future spending.
