Ambitious MMO ‘Pax Dei’ is being developed with Unreal Engine 5

We first heard about Pax Dei back in 2021. At the time, it was billed as a scalable cloud MMO and was supposedly being developed in partnership with Xbox, although it later shifted into a multiplatform project. Now, the studio behind the game, Mainframe, has officially unveiled its ambitious MMO.

Pax Dei is a next-gen MMO being built with Unreal Engine 5. As previous rumours indicated, there will be a full PC version of the game, as well as a cloud-based client, allowing you to check in and play on any screen via streaming. This is a sandbox MMO, with the goal of allowing players to build their own towns and villages on a map with potentially thousands of other players.

As you can see from the trailer, the game is already graphically impressive and the developers are clearly making good use of Unreal Engine 5's visual feature set. The player base will be responsible for forging their own weapons, and armour and constructing their own buildings. Much like Eve: Online, the economy will be largely player-driven, in addition to PvP efforts between factions.

All of these design choices are made in the belief that social human-to-human interaction is the “ultimate source of fun”. This is something that other MMOs have capitalised on previously, but not quite at this scale.

There is no launch date yet, but alpha test sign-ups are now online, and you can already wishlist the game on Steam. Mainframe also has a Discord set up to gather ongoing community feedback during development.

KitGuru Says: There are still a lot of unanswered questions but one thing is for sure, Pax Dei is looking very ambitious.
